Wrong…read more Urban Laundry was a ray of bright light in a dreary Melbourne winter for me a couple of years ago and I will be forever grateful. Living in a cold, damp, 140-year-old rental property up the road, I was forced to venture out into laundrette territory in order to get my clothes dry. I tried a few places and was invariably left cold. The coin machines would be broken, or someone's laid a turd in the corner. Then I found Urban Laundry in North Fitzroy and my laundry drying experiences became tolerable again, you could say I even looked forward to them. They have an actual person here, and a change machine, and they will sell you powder, and it's well lit, and it's clean, and the driers are huge, and they are cheap. This place is the best laundromat I've ever visited and I kind of miss it now that I have a dry, newer house. Dang.

This has to be the coolest looking Coin Laundry I've seen…read more Harking back to the retro feel of the 50's and 60's, the 'Boogie Down" Coin Laundry caught my eye when the new Mountain High shopping complex was being built a year or two ago. As I was living in the area at the time, this place would always make me smile when driving past, and if you check out the photos I've added, you'll see why. Although I have my own washing machine at home, this place makes me want to break it so I can head here and do my laundry...or just make a film clip like Bjorks inside it.

The Carlton North Laundrette is just that and attracts a wide variety of people due to this as well as its cheap prices and safe spot on Rathdowne street. It is frustrating to get there and realise you have no coins, but luckily this laundrette is all about location and is therefor surrounded by cafe's and convenience stores to get yourself some change and a latte while you're at it. Best of all, it is open from the early to late hours of every day, so on a Friday night why go out on a date? Do your laundry instead, stinky.

It's a bloody laundromat and that's it. I end up coming to the Carlton Laundromat at least once a week in the winter when my house is so cold I am unable to dry my clothes. Their dryers run on seven minute cycles but you'll definitely need at least two of those to get everything dry (for some reason they're just not hot enough?) This is an unmanned laundromat so it's best your BYO change (a couple of bucks per spin). Thankfully the North Carlton Canteen is directly next door. They are generally pretty good at giving you change if you need but why not grab a coffee and read a book while you're waiting?
