Sometimes real life mirrors the big screen and it would appear the guys at My Beautiful have achieved this feat in the haven that is Melbourne. They have big industrial standard machines that are extremely robust and dry your clothes in no time at all. It's not too pricey either. They also have long opening hours which is a plus. Furthermore, it is quite a nice little spot to relax and read a book or have a gander at the poster clad walls to see what is going on around the local area. It's hard to wax lyrical about a launderette but My Beautiful Launderette is pretty good looking and has got your laundry back....

It's a bloody laundromat and that's it. I end up coming to the Carlton Laundromat at least once a week in the winter when my house is so cold I am unable to dry my clothes. Their dryers run on seven minute cycles but you'll definitely need at least two of those to get everything dry (for some reason they're just not hot enough?) This is an unmanned laundromat so it's best your BYO change (a couple of bucks per spin). Thankfully the North Carlton Canteen is directly next door. They are generally pretty good at giving you change if you need but why not grab a coffee and read a book while you're waiting?

Also some chairs and stools to hang out on with several copies of the Melbourne visitors guide book and some maps to peruse while waiting for my clothes to dry. There were plenty of washers and dryers. The employee also let me know that my cloths would fit into a smaller washer just fine. She also loaned me the key to a nearby bathroom for customers only. I went in the middle of the day and had no issues waiting for machines. Great little place right by Spencer Outlet so I shopped while I waited for the washing machine to be done. The Lonely Sock isn't just a laundromat, it's a place you can have do your laundry for you. If we had been a bit smarter about timing, we could have used this service, but we didn't mind sitting in the space and just doing the laundry ourselves. It seems to be quite a busy place and they do their commercial items in the same space you would be doing your laundry. The machines are all functional with different capacities. Paying with card is so convenient and there is regular and sensitive skin soap in the vending machine. We had to use a bigger dryer than I wanted but it only cost $1 more and I'm sure it cut down the time by at least 15 min. There wasn't the most seating ever but there were a few comfortable seats and a few stools by the window to sit at. Overall, highly recommend.

Living in a cold, damp, 140-year-old rental property up the road, I was forced to venture out into laundrette territory in order to get my clothes dry. I tried a few places and was invariably left cold. The coin machines would be broken, or someone's laid a turd in the corner. Then I found Urban Laundry in North Fitzroy and my laundry drying experiences became tolerable again, you could say I even looked forward to them. They have an actual person here, and a change machine, and they will sell you powder, and it's well lit, and it's clean, and the driers are huge, and they are cheap. This place is the best laundromat I've ever visited and I kind of miss it now that I have a dry, newer house. Dang.

Expect to be able to pick up your gear on the same day, in fact for me it's only taken 45 minutes, provided you don't have a lot of stuff or anything complicated. They do get really busy at times so you may have to come in the next day, but they're usually very fast, and very good.
