I see this monument each day on my way home, crossing the Sean O'Casey bridge. The memorial is a huge anchor propped up against a stone and inscribed with the dedication to Irish seafarers who were lost while serving on Irish merchant ships during world war II from 1939 to 1945.
It is an eye catching memorial which draws you in to see and just makes you want to learn more about it. I did some research on the memorial website, which is an interesting resource to the dangers faced by merchant vessels during WWII and the sacrifice made by those who risked their lives to transport necessities to Ireland during those turbulent times where the only sense of protection were the words EIRE on the hull of the ship. Overall, it is a memorial which was well placed at the exit of the Sean O'Casey bridge along City Quay and does get quite a bit of exposure. It is also well presented at the foot of a small park. It is well designed to draw in attention. read more
