First, I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner Ann Patterson. After a short wait in the waiting room, a friendly medical assistant measured my height and weight and took my vital signs. She said that my blood pressure of 114/62 was "low," but actually it is normal. (I am a registered nurse.) After a wait of several minutes, the nurse practitioner entered the room. She spoke very courteously to me. She discussed my and my family's medical history. Then she performed a physical examination. She ordered a routine vaccine, laboratory tests, and an x-ray. Many minutes later, another employee entered the room to administer the vaccine, but he had mistakenly drawn up a slightly different type. Several minutes later, he returned with the correct vaccine. He properly administered it into my deltoid muscle. After this appointment, I visited other departments to receive my laboratory tests and x-rays. UPMC put the test results on their website, and the nurse practitioner wrote notes to explain that my results were normal. One year later, I had an appointment with the physician Jennifer Mall. A medical assistant took my height, weight, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and heart rate. My appointment was in the early morning, but the physician did not arrive at work until 45 minutes later. The medical assistant said that the physician usually arrives late so she can drop her children off at school. I think that they should not make me wait 45 minutes. The physician asked some questions, did a brief physical assessment, and ordered routine laboratory tests. Later, at home, I logged onto UPMC's website to view the physician's Visit Summary and Notes. I felt surprised to see a temperature recorded for me, because nobody ever took my temperature. I have no medical conditions, so no follow-ups or treatments are needed.

My PCP left the practice, but I was assured the remaining physician was equally great. That is not the case. They sent my husband a letter basically saying they would no longer be his doctor because he was disrespectful on a phone call. He was trying to relay that he was following the bottle instructions of the medicine prescribed--the staff was very condescending. When I wrote an email explaining the mistake and that I would be looking for a new PCP--they never responded and removed me from the portal--without a single word--I assume I will get the same email as my husband. I am still shocked at their behavior.

Both a RN & PA evaluated my elbow, cleaned it up & the PA used surgical glue to close the wound. Everyone was friendly, helpful & professional. I walked out the door approximately 36 minutes later! I needed to have a form filled out for nursing school, and after a month of five visits, they filled out only half of the form. The front desk scheduled my first appointment for a day when I could not have a test done. The doctor and physician's assistant did not seem to closely read my form, and I had to keep reminding them of what needed to be filled out. I ended up going out of network and paying out of my own pocket to get the remaining tests completed. I will not return to this doctor again.

This also is the first UPMC practice that I visited where I felt like I was a valued patient--the appointment was on-time, the staff was polite and attentive, and the facilities were very clean. The nurses were very kind and made sure to get complete information. I liked them a lot. One of the nurses--Marianne--immediately noticed that I needed a vaccination booster. Apparently, I'd needed it for years and no other medical professional has noticed this. Kudos. Dr. Reasbeck is a gem. Very thorough and funny and professional. He thoughtfully answered my questions and I didn't feel rushed. They really don't make 'em like this anymore. Come a bit early for your appointment. Since this is in the Heinz building, you have to sign in with security and get a visitor's badge to swipe through to the elevators. It only took a couple minutes, but I went after "rush hour." I imagine there would be a longer line if you had an early or late appointment.
