My son had a minor burn so we were able to experience west penns er on a Tuesday. It was busy, but we were in and out in about 3 hours total. Once he was triage and they realize that he did not need serious care, they put us on the fast track and the burn team came down to evaluate. I guess the nation wide nurse shortage really just puts these hospitals in the position to have no choice but to hire any raggedy licensed bird off the street. VELMA had the most shitty attitude ever, and so did her weird ass charge nurse. I asked to speak to a manager bc the nurse was rude, she said you can speak to my charge nurse, I said I've already spoken to her and she was also rude which is why I asked for a manager and this useless, ignorant, and pathetic excuse for a human going to say "WELL... MY manager isn't here, won't be here until 7" in the nastiest most rude tone ever. Total lack of professionalism, empathy or compassion at all for the situation. A family member just had a baby at West Penn. the nursing staff couldn't have taken better care of them and the doctors were wonderful. The baby was perfect but the mom had some serious issues. They were all very quick to act and save her life. All of this while treating the entire family with tremendous respect and tenderness. I have been to this hospital for quite a number of years for various services. The front of the hospital is called "Mellon Pavillion." This area houses a number of physicians and their cancer center is located here. The blood labs are also in this section of the building. The hospital itself is attached to it with full service facilities including an emergency room. I had my children here years ago, went to Century Medical Associates which has a location here, but more often I come here for medical testing when I am unable to get an appointment elsewhere in the AHN network. They have a parking garage which will offer you a reduced rate if you have an appointment with for a medical procedure. If you are visiting the cancer center then they will validate your ticket for free parking. The parking garage does have a walkway on the 4th floor which will bring you into the side entrance of the hospital. My most recent visit here was for a CT scan. The routine is well spelled out. They have a room where you register and then they bring you into another large waiting room. A nurse will summon you, get your information and direct you to the changing area to ready yourself for the procedure. After that a radiologist tech will call your name and you'll walk to one of the CT designated rooms for the procedure. Afterwards they will escort you back to the waiting and or changing room so you can leave. The system works out pretty well and for the most part staff is very courteous and willing to help you. The hospital does have a cafeteria but there are plenty of places a guest can go in Bloomfield if they would rather eat elsewhere. CoVid protocols are in place and masks are mandatory. No photography is permitted. Most insurances are accepted. read more

If i could leave zero stars, i would. I dont tend to leave reviews, but I had to share my experience, i will not be silenced! I have filed a complaint with patient experience, because a dr at west Penn transported a loved one of mine in their personal car, on their personal time, to a rehab facility instead of "waiting forever for an ambulance to transport you, ill just take you even though it goes against hospital rules" my loved one was told by this dr. those were the drs exact words. I mean, really? That is very scary and very serious, as my loved one was not 100% themselves, this doctor could've been a killer for all i know! This has not sat well with me at all. That was only one issue with this dr at west Penn. Then, after this, this same dr gave my loved one their cell phone number and hospital line. The doctor would text and call my loved to the point of it being borderline harassment. My loved one asked them to stop and they didnt. The dr would ask about me and ask about my loved one's personal life. Talk about obsessed and a violation of privacy! My loved one blocked them and they continued to call from a blocked number. The doctor also visited my loved one at the rehab facility, the one where the dr transported them themselves, unannounced and when asked to please not visit, they still did. I have filed a complaint with patient experience and relayed any new information. They didnt act too concerned, simply saying thanks for the new information, that was it. I told myself surely they'd handle it properly. When i asked to speak to HR or someone else to express my concerns i was told they didnt "have a direct line" and they'd forward my concerns. I then stated they can contact me so we could speak directly and not have a middle man. (Patient experience) Nobody has contacted me. I asked to have this dr have no interaction or communication with my loved one at the very least, because this was beyond inappropriate behavior. I was told weeks ago an investigation was happening. Not a word since. Come to find out, this doctor OPERATED on my loved on AFTER all this and was their attending dr after their operation. My loved one also requested a different doctor prior to the operation and to document this in their chart. Which was obviously not done or ignored. I want to escalate my complaint but not sure how to go about that as the hospital is not cooperating with me. If there was an investigation going on, at the very least the dr would not be having contact with my loved one, that's just common sense. This tells me i was probably lied to and there's no investigation and if there was it was brushed under the rug. I'm trying to handle this internally with the hospital and am getting no where. This situation has been nothing short of a nightmare at such a difficult time of having a loved in a hospital. You put your trust into a hospital, doctors, and the administration, all for failure of proper care and lack of action to rectify a problematic and very serious situation. Not sure if I need to contact the state medical board or the department of health, but it appears I just might have to, to get anywhere. I forgot to mention above this doctor in question bought my loved one underwear, and took a picture of my loved one in that underwear, because thats not completely wrong, right? Yet they weren't concerned. this is SEXUAL HARASSMENT!! when i told the hospital this, they ignored me, and never responded! are you KIDDING me! And to validate my concerns, my lawyer advised me of this... If a doctor transports a patient in their own car, you should ALWAYS immediately report it to the appropriate authorities within the healthcare facility, as this is a direct and serious violation of medical practice guidelines and could highly pose significant safety concerns, legal and ethical risks for the doctor and the patient, most, if not all, facilities have policies in place advising against this for liability reasons. I have tried many times now to work with the hospital and be fair to be ignored and nothing has been done. I'm wondering if the local news or the state Medical board would be of better help! This is sick, psycho, obsessed, predatory behavior by this doctor! By the way, the doctors name is GRIFFITH. Id advise everyone to avoid him at ALL COSTS! I feel so lucky to live conveniently located between this hospital and Shadyside Hospital. Only about a five minute walk both for me. I've been to West Penn for different purposes including tests, minor surgery and a visit to the ER for a dog bite. The doctors, nurses and administrative staff are professional, knowledgeable, kind and caring. I never hesitate to recommend the hospital for people in need. My PCP is also located at the hospital. So not only do I receive top-notch care but it's right there in my neighborhood which makes things so much easier. read more

I originally wanted to go on this huge rant about all the problems I have experienced with this hospital however the one today really bothered me & my family. To sum it up the two security guards (Sue & Dvan) at the skywalk bridge checkpoint from the parking garage were nothing be rude & unprofessional. I went to see my baby in the NICU as I have been the last 2+ weeks with my Husband, Mother & 1 year old. Normally I would try to get a baby sitter but this time it didn't work out. We already know children under 12 cannot go into the NICU. We also got told my child cannot be in the family waiting room which I find ridiculous as well. So we normally walk the hallways as we wait to switch since only 2 adults can visit a baby in the NICU. These guards or whatever their job title is asked us what we were going to do with our child. We explained we knew we couldn't bring her into the NICU or waiting room so we hang out in the hallway. Well that was a no my child isn't allowed on the NICU floor at all! Fine I can understand even though it wasn't a problem last time. So I told my husband to take our child to the cafeteria then we can switch. Once we told the guards this that was also a no. They told us he wasn't allowed in to go to the cafeteria because he would sneak in. It was very frustrating to hear this as not only do we drive an hour to this hospital but my husband was denied access because of my other child and the assumption we don't follow the rules. As I asked for their names I was greeted with a rude comment of "Why because we are doing our jobs" . To sum up I was able to get their names and I brought it to the attention of the NICU manager to help this situation. I hoping some type of repercussion or disciplinary actions are taking however I don't think there will be. My only options now is to make this issue known wherever I can and try to keep on top of this. Now I know this may seem petty to some but I'm struggling as is just trying to see my baby in the NICU with an unknown discharge date. I do not expect to be treated like this. Compassion goes a long way with anyone dealing with their babies in the NICU. Even better yet just common courtesy. As this is a bad review I do not want it to reflect the care my baby is receiving in the NICU. All the nurses & doctors get my highest praise! My 88 year old grandmother sat in a waiting room for 4 hours and we still haven't been seen when asked what's taking so long I'm being told they are busy I've been here for 4 hours I'm seeing what's going on and see who's coming in and out. I'm often a patient of e8, or e9. I frequently get admitted due to health issues. Every person that I have ever encountered have been so nice and knowledgeable. The techs are fantastic. They come in. They check on you. They ask if you need anything. Dietary is another really plus with this hospital. They are so sweet. The food is pretty decent. Overall, the hospital is nice. I had the WORST experience with Dr. Blair Jobe. I had multiple operations with Dr. Jobe. He tried to kill me in the most recent operation and did not even care that I narrowly survived, but instead wanted to rebook the surgery that he botched so he could get 2x the pay here. He also did not even tell me I had a cardiac arrest thanks for his awful technique where he tried to kill me, which he downplayed tremendously. He also did NOTHING to save my life. If my father and his friends were not surgeons I would be DEAD today. Thankful for Dr. Tony Zikos at AGH for saving my life and undoing the mess that Dr, Jobe created. I figured it was high time to review my delivery experience here. Overall it was good experience. I think what you're really dealing with the majority of the time is the different personalities of the nurses. Some were super crazy helpful, others were just okay and maybe even lacking some bedside manner. But happily majority were great! The birthing suites are HUGE, so everything is comfy pre-delivery! I visited a friend who had just had a baby and she had a huge post-delivery room. I thought all post-delivery rooms were that big. They are not, she lucked out! The room I had was very small. My pro tip for your stay, bring your own pillows and blankets. The hospitals are terrible. You're already so uncomfortable, anything to help will make things better. The pillows and blankets were basically nothing. I would also recommend bringing snacks. I honestly didn't have much of an appetite, so the food was already blah to me. Another important thing to note. Be your own advocate. I was in a lot of pain and wish I would have asked for more medication. I literally didn't sleep one minute both nights because I was in so much pain. All they gave me was some motrin. There's also a handful of breastfeeding nurses who helped, like the famed booby Bob (I kid you not). I didn't actually find them super helpful, although my experience in general didn't work out as a whole, so I'm not sure if the odds were against me in anyway. One nurse was even pretty rough with my girls aka boobs. I definitely trust my doctors though and actual delivery was good and really the review is about the hospital experience in a whole. I'm really thankful for the first nurse we had. They are miracle workers when they're good! read more

I am so happy that my insurance works for AHN and not UPMC. This location is centrally located and only about 12 minutes from my apartment. I was here to get some bloodwork and utrasounds done. The hospital is a little daunting to navigate because of how big it is however, there are many colored signed and arrows to direct you to where you need to go. I had a little trouble finding the East tower so I asked a random person walking along the sidewalk. She turned out to be a nurse assistant who went above and beyond to show me my way. I was very impressed with how friendly she was. Hospitals are never fun for me to go to but, I am happy with the small touches West Penn hospital put into the hallways. There was a hallway with with historical medical tools; I am happy they do not use those anymore. The hospital seems a little dated however, I am OK with that because I know that unlike other medical institutions in Pittsburgh, they do not grab land from less fortunate areas of the city for their own gain. read more

I wish I could give this hospital 0 stars. I am disgusted by their gross miscare (no care) and fraudulent billing activity. My daughter is a student at Pitt. She called me and told me she was having vision issues. I sent her to West Penn thinking they were a decent hospital. She sat in the ER with a suspected detached retina for 3 hours. I've had a detached retina so I knew the signs. Well, after 3 hours they told her to head home and come back Monday as they didn't have an eye Dr on call. Apparently they were unaware of this upon accepting her insurance card and having her wait 3 hours. I KNEW this was a serious problem and waiting was NOT ok. SO I sent her to Mercy. She wasn't thrilled but she went. They saw her and realized she had not one but TWO detached retinas. IF left untreated another day or two they said she would have lost partial, if not total sight. They did eye surgery on both eyes. They were amazing and took great care of her. Please see my review on UPMC Mercy. An actual hospital with proper treatment protocol. Well...as if THIS isn't bad enough, today I got a bill for $158. The first issue with this is they didn't try billing our insurance and gave us the "uninsured" patient discount. The original cost before their discount is $512. SO though my ins I'd be paying $150. $8 less than their discount anyway. I called today - and expressed my distaste or their fraudulent billing and substandard care. All the billing woman would tell me is that she isn't in the ER. Well, I don't CARE if you're not in the ER. You're in billing and this is a fraudulent charge. So Now I have the $150 bill from this useless hospital as well as my actual $150 charge from the hospital that actually charged her. I will NOT being paying this. read more

Beware of their financial department!!! My credit score was ruined- plummeted by 173 points and I can't get a home loan! I want my credit score repaired! I paid for my ER copay and hospital fees at West Penn Hospital from my 08/2020 visit. I kept getting harassing calls from a place called US Acute care solutions that said I stilled owed money. But I called my hospital and they said I didn't owe anything. I get a bill from a collections agency- Phoenix financial. I called the hospital again and emailed them and they said I didn't have any collections or anything due. I thought this whole thing was a scam so I ignored it. I tried getting a home loan and they said I had poor credit due to this collection. After digging, I found out that the hospital sends my bill to this company. The hospital never told me about this outstanding bill and when I asked for it, they denied that I had any payment due. When I called US acute, the woman was rude on the phone and said "well, you'll just have to deal with collections". I paid collections in full but my credit score is ruined. The damage has been done. I've had three major interactions with West Penn Hospital - one through the mammogram center (get in done, ladies!), another through orthopaedic surgery, and the other through the maternity center. The mammogram center, like many of them, has scheduling issues. They are always behind in wait times and schedule several patients at the same time. However, the service is decent and unfortunately, the wait times are what you can expect almost anywhere. The Orthopaedic Department is much better than you might think. Coming from an orthopedic history at UPMC, I wasn't sure how satisfied I would be with the doctors and service provided at West Penn. When I had to have another ankle surgery I didn't have much of a choice, due to my insurance, and was pleasantly surprised. The doctors are very attentive and knowledgeable, as well as willing to try different methods and be progressive in general. The maternity department is another area in which West Penn excels. I always assumed that UPMC had this market cornered, but came to discover that West Penn outshines Magee in many ways. Of course, that knowledge is secondhand since I have never been a patient at Magee, but I've heard it from several people. In Labor & Delivery, each patient is assigned a dedicated nurse who is with you through his/her shift, and you are his/her only patient throughout that time. I adored both of my LD nurses. Once we were moved to the postpartum unit I was assigned a variety of nurses throughout my stay. While they were not quite as friendly as the LD nurses, they got the job done and I didn't have any outstanding issues. UPMC is more highly-regarded on the national scale, but, in my opinion, West Penn is a hidden gem in this town. Even if you have the choice because of your insurance, I would choose West Penn nine times out of ten! read more

No place is that busy and surely a hospital should do a better job with answering and/or returning calls. West Penn Hospital provides excellent emergency room care. Making visits to an emergency room when I need to see a doctor right away, such as severe arthritis, chest pain, bone injury etc., can be challenging. However, the staff is highly efficient and caring. They always show concern for the patient, whether it is pain issues or making you feel at ease. read more

After a bad fall running - I heard a snap - the pain was bad but I got up and finished the run. Two days later I asked my doctor what to do, she said it's probably a broken rib but nothing can be done. Well, we will see.... I went to Med Express in Bloomfield where they were great - after X-rays, they saw 3 broken ribs and a partially collapsed lung . They sent me to West Penn ER via ambulance . The ER was great . They were friendly , enjoyed my wacky sense of humor and professional . One doesn't want to have to go to an ER but if you do, I would highly recommend theirs. read more

There is FREE PARKING available in Lawrenceville for any staff and visitors to the hospital, with a FREE SHUTTLE which comes about every fifteen minutes or so to take you to West Penn Hospital (or bring you back) so that you don't have to pay a fee to park in the parking garage next to the hospital. read more

My wife is 8 weeks pregnant and has hyperemesis gravidarum. It's been a nightmare dealing w ER visits and the obgyn finally sent us here to be admitted. Everyone was very nice and attentive from taking bloodwork to nausea medicine. The one nurse was so sweet she wrote down an infusion center for us to check out and got me a recliner so I could stay the night. So sweet. I also come here for my obgyn and she's incredible! This place is a good hospital with some good doctors and some aight nurses; The ER is good this is also a good place to get any basic testing done. However if something is actually wrong with you or you need surgery then please go somewhere else! My buddy has a condition and he needed surgery and they were all idiots. they messed up his surgery now he has to have his feces emptied into a bag attached to him. My sister had a serious brain condition and they messed up her spinal tap she fell right off the bed! She's good now but people who go here go through the ringer. The staff is nice, parking is shit they charge their own staff/docs/nurses/patients to park in the parking garage. they have this huge empty garage that's rarely used. I recommend other places if something is actually serious but they can handle most simple stuff like headaches, broken bones, etc. read more

Very disappointed with the communication from the West Penn staff regarding my wife's recent and so called "routine" surgery. Surgery was schedule for 7:30 using a Divinci robot. Plan was for surgery to last less than 30 minutes, then my wife was to be in recovery for about an hour and then I would be able to take her home by 10:00 (or so). Operation did not go as planned. There was blood loss and anesthesia issues. I understand that there is really no such thing as "routine" surgery, but there should be some formal communication with the family when things do not go as planned. After kissing my wife good-bye when they wheeled her off to surgery, I was left in the waiting room for about 6 hours before anyone notified me that something was wrong. Then I got a call about 1:00 from someone who did not give me her name or title, telling me about these issues and that it would be another hour before I could see my wife. Then 2 hours later, got another call from someone asking me why I hadn't come to post-op, to which I responded "I was not told to". So then I was told to ask the waiting room attendant how to get to post-op. I was then handed a preprinted set of directions (IN ALL CAPS) how to get there. Very confusing, had to go down and elevator, walk some distance, then take an elevator and walk some more. I got lost once and no one offered to show me the way. Doctor never spoke to me, which was quite disappointing. Would NEVER recommend West Penn Hospital and would NEVER recommend this particular female surgeon for the reasons stated. My wife is doing well, but it could have been handled much better. UPMC is way ahead of AHN in dealing with patients. read more

My daughter was born at 33 weeks ,and weighed less than 4pounds. Everybody there is absolutely fantastic, I honestly do not have one bad thing to say. The lady's on the nic u are patient and answered all my questions. She got moved down to pediatric's unit and has been doing wonderful. There is this one nurse named Kathy (hope I spelled that right) and I do not know her last name, but this lady could never be repayed back for her kindness and patience with me. I am not somebody that feels comfortable doing things that makes me nervous, she has taught me how to properly care for Akasha. I can't even begin to tell you how much this lady has done. And it's not just me, she is like that with everyone. She is a truly fabulous woman. Not enough kind words to say about her or this place. They are making sure my daughter is going to come home. I had been there twice, one was in march to the burn unit and then one was within last 2 weeks at the ER. In march, the doctors were extremely rude to me in the burn unit making it seem like my pain was not important to them. They even talked outside of my room how they wanted to clear the rooms out quickly. They came in and barely looked at my burns and just said keep circulation to them. Meanwhile another health center sent me there. I have never felt more pushed to the side. Then I went to ER recently and went in with extreme pain and the doctor there was unbelievable. Had no patient skills. I went in for extreme constipation. And he literally told me that he doesn't want to stick his fingers up my rectum to try to help me. And then when i asked about a possible enema to help relieve some pain he flat out said, "oh I thought about enema but I thought you would be too embarrassed". I wasn't embarrassed until he said that. Then thankfully my roommate was there who is a nursing student. She offered to give me the enema because they wouldn't. Then his comment to that was, "I'm sure the nurse will appreciate not having to give it". Like i am sorry that is your job. Not my roommates. If my roommate wasn't there I wouldn't have gotten any help. And I ended up leaving with more pain than I was in arriving. They never told me what was wrong, they just gave me ibuprofen and tylenol and told me to take miralax and suppository, even though I did that prior to visiting there. And now I am still in the same state and seeking help elsewhere. Everyone who asks I say don't even go there. read more

I just think that some of the doctors really need a class on bedside manner. I was a sleepy, hormonal, worried new mother and I honestly couldn't find anyone other than 1 pediatrician and 2 nurses who would ever take the time out of their busy days to talk to me like I was a human being who mattered and who deserved answers about what was going on with her very sick newborn. They just seemed to never leave me with any hope or even explanations about what was going on. The last night we were there was when we finally got a good doctor, she realized that Gracie's condition was too involved for them to handle, put her pride aside, and decided to transfer her. Thank god for this woman, seriously she was a godsend because she put her pride aside for the good of her patient which is what should have been done from the beginning. Now as far as my doctors and nurses go they were all wonderful, they always made sure that I was comfortable, took the time to sit with me and talk since they knew I was scared to death, and treated me with the best care no matter what I needed. The night my baby was transferred my doctor could see that i was visibly losing my mind with worry and even though it was 11:30 at night she went out of her way to get me discharged so that I could go with her. If the visit would have just been for me I would have given them 5 stars, but the way they treated me as far as the baby goes definitely knocks them down to 3. read more

My husband had several orthopedic surgeries here. Everyone and everthing is clean, down-to-earth, informative and prompt- from OR holding area, recovery and the nursing floors. He's had great results so far and there is not one person who has not been wonderful to us. read more

In the past few years, my mom's declining health has rendered us subjects at many area hospitals, and none compare to our experience here. From the very first person who registered my mom for surgery to the cafeteria staff -- the kindness and helpfulness of the staff overall was unparalleled. Her surgeon, Dr. Schmidt (and Stephanie) and her Anesthesiologist, James Acuff, couldn't have been more attentive, informative or accommodating. Her nurse on the 9th Floor, Ashley, was so delightful, as much as she was skillful. We were greeted by every person in uniform, whether they were in the elevator, behind a help desk or distributing food. It was unbelievable! We were even personally escorted from the surgery center to my mom's room as soon as she was released from the recovery area. Personally escorted! Who does that? The entire staff made us feel as though my mom's care truly was priority number one. Every other hospital we've dealt with, from Uniontown to Ruby Memorial, paled in comparison to West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh.
