Been to this shop a few times, bought rod building gear and was a decent experience except that one of the employees on 2 separate occasions including today made me uncomfortable. Felt like they thought I was going to steal something, even had someone sitting by the walkway exit. Was there to purchase a rod blank, grips and guides. On the first occasion, I had already purchased my blank and was walking out and that same employee asked another employee "has this guy paid for his stuff?" Today, I had the intention of buying my blank and supplies. But, I ended up going to another tackle shop to buy my blank and supplies. Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but sure didn't feel that way. Don't think I'll be going back sadly, they have good supplies. read more

The owner Sam De La Torres is a dishonest crook! On the Friedman Adventure podcast show Tackle Shop Confession (a live interactive podcast with Q&A) he told me personally, come on down and he'd get me a deal on a fishing rod I want. Total scammer. I go there the next day and guess what... No deal on fishing rod/jig stick I wanted to purchase. The scammer wanted me to pay full price and tells me it's a good deal. Total airhead. Moreover, Sam mumbles/talks to himself condescending things about you while you look around. This crook even made me wait while spooling a reel for somebody that's not even present after I asked about a fishing rod. Mind you, myself and another costumer were the only one there. Hahaha. This place is also the dirtiest place I've ever been to. It's like he's never cleaned the place in a 100 years. So overpriced compared to all other tackle shops. Yo-yo jigs and surface irons are marked up $2-5 more than Turners Outdoorsman. Who knows what else is marked up. My advice stay away! The owner Sam is a crook that has a lot of friends and knowledge in the industry but the man can't even honor what he promised. Sad!! read more

First I e gotta say I highly recommend this shop Went in today because of a reel fitment issue. The rods reel seat was too big to accept the reel clamp. Sam (the owner) listened to my concern and said let me find something that'll work for my Cavalla 12. He found a rod that fit perfectly for my reel. I went there to spool my reels. Asked question about tuna fishing to Steve since I'm new to offshore fishing. He explains in detail with easy to understand language. He even told me that I can rent tuna rod set up from the landing rather than buying from them since I'm not sure for big tuna fishing yet. I will be back to Island Fishing Tackle for sure! These guys walked me through the whole process. They were so helpful and even got carried away by showing me all their tricks and tips to catching rock fish, halibut, and snapper. Their location is conveniently located off the 405 freeway(making it an easy stop on the way to San Diego!), they are now located behind the Ralph's and next to O'Reilly's in a place twice the size of their last location. The owner's are always very honest and truthful- prices are fair and you won't be up-sold with products you do not need. They have stuff for everyone- beginners to advanced fishermen.
