Thankfully this time it was less busy and we grabbed some seats inside. It's certainly a unique place to eat - the only other Caribbean restaurants I'm aware of are the two Turtle Bay chains in the city centre. The interior is all reclaimed materials and vibrantly coloured painted walls. They've only around 30 covers so the place is quite small (expect to struggle to get a spot when it's busy, but there are plenty of other dining options along this stretch of Barlow Moor Road). The menu is pretty concise, which I liked - their Beef Stew Peas was really flavoursome and just about tolerably spicy - I'm sure you can order other dishes that are more so. The sides of coconut rice and mixed peas are quite sizable, so best to share between two. I wasn't a fan of the fried plaintain here unfortunately. Washed down with a bottle of ShinDigger beer it made for a tasty and nicely unusual dinner spot. Tip: it's probably not for you if you're in any sort of hurry; the service was quite slow and it took an age to get the bill.

The vibe of the place is great and very laid back. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive although a little slow at times but they were busy so will let them off. We ordered jerk chicken, curried goat, coconut rice and slaw 3 ways. The chicken was just ok - very tasty but the skin wasn't crisp which is a shame as that's my favourite bit! However, the curried goat was the best that I have ever tasted. It was spicy but tasted amazing especially with the coconut rice which was equally as good. The prices are quite reasonable for the area..approx £7 for mains and £3 for all side dishes. I had a Guinness punch which was tasty and quite good value. Overall a great little place which I will certainly return to. If the chicken was crisp then this would be be the best Caribbean cuisine restaurant in Manchester in my opinion.

Absolutely delicious as always & excellent value. As mentioned in my tip, Kool Runnings is a permanent catering van which I have had the pleasure of frequenting for around 10 years. In that time, I have always received consistently tasty food. It is located right in the middle of an area with a lot of Caribbean heritage in Manchester and has always been extremely popular. When I spent a week's spell in Farringdon down in London Town, I was pointed in the direction of an excellent Caribbean restaurant named Cottons. If anyone's in the area I urge you to go, it's bliss. Bear in mind I'd never had Caribbean cuisine before so my tastebuds were awakened with delicious deep fried savoury plantains and salted cod fritters and chickpea filo tarts and spicy yet creamy sauces... cue salivation. Well, you can imagine when I returned to Manchester I felt bereft as the only option I seemed to have was Panama Hatty's, and one of my foodie friends had already poo-pooed that to hell, so what's a girl to do? I got a fever for da flava and even the companion who dined with me at the time tried to recreate the plantains at home and failed miserably. And she's a really good cook. Step in M and M's Caribbean Spice. I shall list the celebrity clientele first. When Simon Webbe who used to be in Blue is in town, he always visits. When Wyclef Jean played the MEN Arena, he ordered takeout two nights in a row. Both these guys would know their Caribbean cuisine. Their visits tell you a lot. It's a great little casual diner where you can grab some cake (make that homemade Jamaican rum cake served with rum cream... mmmmm) or get proper main dishes like smoked mackerel in coconut sauce or filleted fish with callaloo with rice and peas. I've been bitten by the Caribbean bug, and if you've not yet experienced it, M and M's is a great place to start. Mike the chef has been in the business for over thirty years, so I wouldn't knock his knack for the sweet n' spicy. It's closed Sundays but we can live with that, as it normally stays open nice and late. If your Jamaican accent is a little rusty, here's a good starting point. To say the word 'bacon', simply say two words. 'Beer can.' It's foolproof. I learned that one many years ago. Not that it's convinced anyone I'm Jamaican so far.

You can just taste how home made every dish is in here. The house speciality is Ackee and Saltfish (Jamaica's national dish), and is like a hug on a plate. I love M&M's Carrot Punch to wash it all down with, but if it isn't your cup of tea there's always Redstripe!

There's only a few tables to dine in but it's open till 9.30pm which is great. There are some (inadvertently) hilarious thank you letters from school children on the wall: my personal favourite says "Your beef batty is tasty." I tried a saltfish fritter for the first time which had a perfect mix of crispy batter and soft filling, would recommend it. The jerk chicken was very different from what I am used to at Buzzrocks. The sauce at Buzzrocks is very thick and in fact solidifies when you put it in the fridge (i.e. the secret to its deliciousness is that it's basically just fat). At Mama Flo's the sauce is thin liquid. It's got a good spicy favour but I miss the indulgent richness. Also although it's more expensive there was less chicken, it was a little dry and the rice and peas were a bit overcooked (fluffy). Unfortunately for me they were out of plaintain so I'll have to pop to try it and maybe sample one of the other dishes - at Buzzrocks I was never very adventurous about trying to the curry or fried chicken etc because the jerk sauce was so addictive but here I will keep sampling the full menu! If you are, you won't have many options, so Buzzrocks is the place for you! I don't know any other Carribean take-aways to compare it to, but this place is excellent. It serves Jamaican and Caribbean classics such as Jerk Chicken, Curried Goat and Callaloo Saltfish, all for around £5 and all served with awesome rice 'n' peas or less exciting boiled rice if you aren't very adventurous. It has vegetarian options, which I'm told are excellent (I personally have always chosen goat or saltfish). Additionally, they have a menu entitled 'only 2 pound to go' if you want to pick up a quick snack on the way past or stock up the fridge with delicious Caribbean treats. This menu includes fried dumplings, plantain and a range of patties (beef, chicken, lamb and fish) which are personally my favourite, all for £1. They also do a good portion of northern chips and gravy with a Caribbean twist for just £2. They even do Jamaican deserts. It does have space to sit down if you want to eat there, and though its standard take-away plastic seats, it's perfectly pleasant.
