If you are the adventurous sort that likes to control your own schedule and success on a fishing trip than this is your lodge. If you require a mint on your pillow and your bed turned down every evening then this isn't your lodge. I am the former and Island Point Lodge is absolutely perfect for what I like to do. I have booked a trip there the last three years and have reserved cabins for the next two years if that's any indication of how much fun we had up there. Frank and his staff do an incredible job of ensuring you have the tools for an enjoyable week of fishing. To start off with the lodge is not far at all from the Airport - a short van ride to the dock and an even shorter boat ride to the lodge. The staff meets you at the airport and helps get your bags loaded into the van where they take you into town to get any last minute items you might need. Then it's off to the landing for a short 5 minute boat ride to the lodge. The lodge itself is exactly what I'd expect an Alaskan fishing lodge to look like. A main building surrounded by smaller cabins that the guests stay in. Our cabin featured a large bunk bed type of setup with the lower bunk being of king/queen size and a small bet atop of that. There is also a mini fridge for your refreshments and a bathroom with shower. We found the food to be excellent with breakfast served beginning at 5 AM, lots of sandwich material to make sandwiches for your lunch on the boat and then dinner at 7 PM (apps at 6:30). Our first night at the lodge we were treated to mountains of fresh caught crab and toward the middle of the trip we had fresh shellfish picked that day. Also on the menu was of course halibut. The lodge will provide fishing poles and bait for fishing and the tackle is "sold" for a reasonable price and in the case of the halibut tackle, if you still have it at the end of the week, the lodge will buy it back for the same price. They also provide you your own boat/motor and fuel. In this case I got a brand new 50 HP Yamaha 4 stroke outboard which ran beautifully. With your own boat you completely control your own schedule so you can fish whenever you want - all day or part day or just stay at the lodge and relax watching the dozen or so eagles the frequent the resort area. Once you bring your catch back to the dock they retrieve it from the boat, bring it up to the cleaning station and will process the fish in your desired style (steaks, fillets, skin-on or off), then they double wrap and freeze your catch. While your fish is being processed your boat is getting prepped for your next outing. If you didn't bring your own coolers then at the end of the trip they bring the catch to another facility where is it portioned out into airline acceptable boxes and prepared for your journey back home. There is a small but very reasonable charge for the fish boxes and it's well worth it for the convenience of simply bringing a box (or more) of fish to the airline counter as checked baggage. As for the fishing, we found it to be very good. In the interest of full disclosure I only fish for halibut as I've done plenty of salmon fishing in the past and I enjoy the halibut much more. It can be a 20 minute to nearly an hour boat ride depending on the spot you choose to fish. While you are waiting for the fish to bite you get to enjoy Alaska's beauty in the form of snowcapped mountains, seals, sea otters, sea lions and dolphins and the occasional whale. Everyone in our group caught fish and the camaraderie amongst the fishermen was outstanding. As a testament to others' level of enjoyment, nearly everyone that was there this year has already rebooked for next year. While there might not have been a mint on our pillow this trip was perfect for us in every way - I can't wait until next year! read more
