We found a spot at the bar and the bartender greeted us immediately. We ordered drinks and checked out the fun shots menu on the wall. He said he didn't really know those shots so we just ordered a shot that we knew. He accidentally put something wrong in it but we tasted it. It was good so we drank it. He was a good vibe and nothing about this interaction was a negative!! We got the loaded tots and 2 burgers. The loaded tots had too many onions for my liking but they were still good and we were pleasantly surprised by the burgers! In the end we ended up coming back the next day too just because we could. Got the nachos and we weren't sad! My one negative, but I didn't remove a star because it would seem I'm in the minority, which i don't understand... live music. They had a band come in towards the end of our visit, which is what ultimately made it the end of our visit. The place is small, the band is loud.. conversing with friends ends at the point that the band starts. All in all.. highly recommend this place. Full bar, really good menu. And we'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area, just earlier in the day to avoid the live music! ;)

We had family visiting from Oklahoma and spent the day in Mille Lacs. We were starving on our way…read moreback to Elk River and decided to stop in at Rough-Cut. The Saturday prime rib special was one of the deciding factors. Within the first few minutes, we learned that they were completely sold out [mind you it was before 7pm]. The two biggest disappointments were service, or lack thereof, and the amount of time it took for our order to be filled. For context, after ordering, we waited over 45 minutes for our food to be served. And when it did come, it was luke warm and not served at the same time. My husband was nearly done with his meal before I received mine. While completely outside the control of Rough-Cut, we sat, very, very hungry listening to some loud mouth drunk talking about how many girls his friend "banged". Mind you....we were sitting on the restaurant side, not the bar side. Just added to an already bad experience. Rough-Cut needs more and higher quality wait staff and a smaller menu that they can actually fill. Timely and of quality. For extra context, the dining room was busy, but we did not wait to sit down and there were open tables the entire time we were there. My recommendation for those traveling along 169 ....keep going. Sorry!

The food is always good quality and the ice cream is delicious! I highly recommend their onion rings. If you're looking for a good cheese pull be sure to get the mozzarella sticks. I do wish they offered a grilled cheese or other vegetarian sandwich / burger but they do have some vegetarian sides & side salads I believe.

The menu is pretty massive, and I've never had anything I didn't like. Today I tried the Big Happy cheeseburger meal, substituting bottled water for the soft drink and adding a Heath McFluffy. I tell ya', this burger was THICK. It consists of a 1/3 burger patty with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and special sauce on a potato bun. What was I thinking ordering this behemoth burger?? I KNEW I would never be able to eat all of this, but golly, I was going to try. Tasty and messy, special sauce dripping all over.... the special sauce is a ketchup/mayo mixture, a "mayup" if you will. Enough delicious pipping HOT French fries to feed a small village. Tons of Heath pieces in the McFlurry, so I was delighted they don't skimp. A bit pricey overall for 1 person ($21.25 with tax). I couldn't even finish half of any of the meal or treat, it was just too much for me. If you are heading north (or south!) on Highway 169 in Onamia, check Happy's out. Oh, and their homemade sloppy Joe's are excellent and their onion rings are better than any other restaurants in at least a 30 mile radius.

That being said, the place is legitimately a great business within a small town that does not possess many options. First and foremost, these guys lead the way with a really nice beer selection. It does not remain static like many of their competitors' lineups. They often change their taps (something like twenty or more) and take chances with unique flavors. How many bars have a Salted Nut Roll beer? From a food perspective, I can say that while not having tried a ton, that which I have has all been on the better side. Daily specials and HH are also something to expect, with the former often as unique as you might get. And if you're in the mood for a good burger, I would liken Kev's to a Boulder Taphouse, all in ways similar to quality, portion, and creation. At the crux, though, are the staff and owners. They are great people that I consistently choose to surround myself with, hardworking, friendly and fun. It is a young atmosphere within a sports/burger-bar environment. One-hundred percent worth trying if you are new to the area or passing through town.
