I am so grateful I found this remarkable art studio on Giudecca. The warm and gracious artist, Monica Martin, patiently worked with me as I viewed her large and varied body of work for several hours. I ended up spending the majority of money I had put aside for gifts in her shop. I bought several original pieces for my home (I will add photos once I've had them framed) and many pieces for friends and family--small framed prints, leather bound notebooks, bookmarks, and other small works, all with Monica's beautifully creative art on them.
Monica is the type of artist who is constantly growing and expanding her range of artistry, so she has a broad array of work, not just a narrow niche. She is remarkably creative and prolific, and I easily could've spent hours more just studying her work.
And Giudecca itself is a wonderfully small island, filled with small shops, excellent restaurants, and very interesting museums; I recommend making a day of it, if you can. Giudecca is a nice change of pace from the crowds and busyness in Venice, and it only takes a 5-10 minute ferry ride to get there.
But even if you go only to see Monica's beautiful shop, Itaca Art Studio, it will be well worth the trip. read more
