Forget the science-experiment food--this is just really good pub food that actually tastes like something you want to eat. It's not fancy in a stuffy way, just solid, well-done dishes across the board. Honestly, we didn't miss on a single thing. The drinks were a highlight too. I ordered the Hemingway and it came hidden inside a hollowed-out book, which sounds gimmicky but somehow totally worked and was actually fun. We almost skipped dessert, but ended up popping into the ice cream shop and I'm glad we did. Simple, high-quality, and exactly what hit the spot after a long meal. If you're in Bray and want a meal you'll genuinely enjoy eating, I'd skip the show across the road and come here instead. We also wandered upstairs to the lounge for a drink afterward--the old wood beams and leather chairs made it easy to stay longer than planned.

So my initial challenge was to find a place to have a nice dinner as I didn't know the area. So a lot may have changed since my visit, but I believe this was a well deserved rating as the ambiance was quiet, and quaint. The service was good and the food was definitely satisfying, as I was craving some Japanese food. If I'm ever in the area again, and craving Japanese food, I'd go back. Many thanks to Discerning 1, whose review prompted me to track this place down. :-))…read more We checked it out last Sunday for the £25 per nose lunch package: a good way of testing an establishment. Very impressed, as was la contessa. Four-course menu with a choice from 4 dishes for the first three thereof. The dishes were not these, which I think is just a sample. http://www.campagna.caldesi.com/page.php?intPageID=44 I had: Crab and avocado. A sort of overlarge fishcake that was stuck together with olive oil and subtly seasoned. Squid ink noodles with clams (squid ink pasta is great). *Calves liver with spinach. Melts in the mouth. All absolutely scrumptiliously delightful and the portions were not over-large, as they can often be in Italy. More 'nouvelle cuisine' size. The pudding course was a set mixture of 'bits and pieces'. I don't have a much of a sweet tooth and I have usually pigged out by then anyway, but this little collection was desperately pleasing upon the eye and the palate. The wines were reasonably priced for a place like that. £25 for a bottle of Chianti Classico, although it didn't fire me up like the one I had at the 'Old Devil Inn' for £18. (see separate review) I thought that the decor was a bit bland, but I tend to ogle plates rather than fellow diners or wallpaper. The staff were attentive and charming. Now I look forward to the autumn: Tuscans do some rather interesting game dishes.

From the outside, this looks like an inviting pub. In my opinion going up and down High Street in…read moreMaidenhead near my hotel, it looked the most inviting for a Sunday afternoon. It has a nice size area in front to sit, drink, talk and people watch. Going inside is just as cool. It's got two levels of wood and brass with a well stocked bar towards the back. It's part of the Wetherspoon chain, I'm told by a local friend, but still has a long history of service in various forms dating back a few hundred years. How cool. The food selection was diverse and reasonable and I had a hard time choosing, but in this case I went for one their gourmet burgers. Why a burger? Well, come on, it's a pub, and the burger had bacon, and a Stilton and Shropshire blue cheese and onion topping. If you have not had a proper Stilton cheese, you're missing out. The burger of course came with thick cut chips and I had that with a West Coast Pale Ale from Renegade brewery, a local craft brewery out of Berkshire. There were many more I wanted to try, but too little time. So you go into the pub, pick out a numbered table, order what you want from the menu and tell the bartender where you're sitting and the food magically appears after a short wait. Usually food chains don't stir up fond images, but it looks like Wetherspoon acquires and restores unique places keeping their names, but providing a quite nice menu at good prices.I really enjoyed this place and look forward to coming back.
