We were craving food other than seafood, and found this Italian market on Yelp that offered several meal options to go. The reviews were good, but now I'm realizing they're probably based on the market and not the meals. I ordered the lasagna for $9.95 and it tasted like it had been previously frozen. You get what you pay for! It was actually lukewarm when I opened it, so I had to nuke it. It lacked flavor, to say the least. Hubby said the spaghetti with meatballs was also average, at best. The caprese salad that he ordered was the worst he's ever had. If you look at the photo of the salad, you can see that the tomatoes aren't even ripe. They also gave the wrong dressing for this salad. Typically it comes with balsamic dressing but they gave us Italian dressing instead. Next time we'll stick with an Italian restaurant. read more

I ordered lasagna which is always great, but why is the staff taking the lasagna out the fridge with their bare hands? His fingers were wrapped around the whole piece. Well, after hearing so many good things about this place, they really brought me down several pegs, the Salad was generic with no love to it with crappy boxed croutons, spaghetti wasn't terrible but my sweet heart pointed out that the sauce tasted like it was from a can, the only part that earned a star was the desserts, Mint Cheesecake and Carrot cake, lovely presented and it is good. The other issue I have with this place is it's cramped and I hate to be there at a busy time especially so many shelves somewhat blocking people who are browsing and people who are paying for both the cafe order and the shopper's order, doesn't help there is only one cash register too....I will not be going to this place again in the future unless proper care is used for both the store and their cooked food read more

We have been going to the Italian Market for awhile now... It has the freshest Salad Bar in Town! Everything in it is interesting... They make a "Boston Potato Salad" that is different than the average Potato Salad...and very good! Their Toasted Sandwiches are amazing, so big they are hard to finish! They have a Sandwich Menu on the wall that is FULL of interesting combinations! They also have freshly made "Pizza by the Slice"...SO much going on in that Store - Restaurant! Tons of hard to find Italian cooking needs... The Desert Bar is to die for... HUGE Pies, done the right way... Fancy Cakes, including a Layered Chocolate Ganache Torte Cake, that I would walk miles for a slice, haha! Trouble keeping awake? They also have what they call a "Buzz Cookie"... A decadent HUGE Cookie...Chocolate Ganache sandwiched between two huge Chocolate Chip Cookies, then dipped in Chocolate, and drizzled with white Chocolate... It is monumental... a two - handed Cookie! Something to see...and even better to eat, haha! Their Carrot Cake is rich, and worth every mouthful! I swear one of the favorite things about this place is the perfume that mingles from the kitchen and aisles of food. It is a hard to describe but an oh so yummy mix of fresh baked breads, italian deli meats and deliciousness being prepped in the kitchen. I've long been coming here for the from scratch pizza dough, gelato, balsamic vinegars, and other authentic Mediterranean goodies that you won't find elsewhere. The staff are super knowledgeable about what is sold in the store and can make recommendations on substitutions in the unlikely event thay they dont have what you need for your recipe. Their coffes, sandwiches and soups are fantastic. My go to quick lunch here is the Vesuvius; probably my favorite sandwich in the city. With a pile of spicy salami, black olive tapinade and pickle slices covered in gooey cheese and hot mustard between two slices of grilled foccacia, it should be yours too. read more

High marks for the food, lower marks for the spotty service. This place has never been able to get a handle on its staff, and that's always been a bit a drawback. Still, they make some really great food, including one of my favourite things to bring to a social gathering - the salmon and cream-cheese pate. You will be the favourite of any group if you bring this to a party with a few crackers and a nice bottle of vino. They also make nice pizzas, great sandwiches, and lots of pre-made pastas for instant lunches and dinners to eat in or take out. The shop is also an Italian grocery, and another of my favourite things to do is buy their frozen ball of pizza dough and their own shop-made pizza sauce and make up my own pizzas at home. The best homemade sausages in town...delivered fresh every Thursday afternoon and if you can't get there until Monday, you'll find them in the freezer. My favorite - sweet fennel sausages, but there are spicy chorizo and some other kinds as well. Perfect grilled, served with lentils....I'm drooling but that's not all you can find at the Italian Market. Being a huge pasta fan, I'm really crazy about the two aisles of imported pastas from the standard to the really unique and all the possible toppings like oil dried black olives, Italian antipasti, anchovies by the tin or the jar, roasted and marinated artichoke hearts and red peppers are some of my favorites. Olive oils and balsamic vinegars come in every grade and from every region in Italy. Italian Market tucked in the plaza on Young street has a great convient loaction with plenty of parking right in front and even opened 7 days a week. Walking there on my way to work or even home I often just stop in a and look around at all the yummy stuff. Coming into the variety of smells from the fresh garlic to all the spices make me hungry. Like others I find this a great place to pick up some ingredients to make that specail dish for home. But if you are not a cooker then you can go to the back and look through the glass cases at all the yummy dishes that they create on location of a wide varitey of Pasta and Lasagna's. I used to work here and always loved the food and the knowledgeable staff, however when I went in today for a sandwich and a salad, I noticed the staff were not friendly at all, everyone looked miserable to be there. When I finally was brought my sandwich and salad (while waiting outside like I was told) they forgot a fork for my salad, meaning I had to go back through the store to ask an employee for a fork after already waiting almost my entire lunch break for my order. When I worked there, we all had great customer service, attention to detail, and if we presented ourselves in any way other than happy and friendly, we were taken into the office to have a talking to. It seems like they put more effort into the renovations and forgot about training their staff properly. read more

I prefer the downtown location much better- here's a tip- update your menu if you can't combo anything anymore instead of telling me when I inquire, especially when it is busy and you want what you are used to getting. I also thought the noodle side was 1.00$, now it's 2.99$? Update your website too for that matter please. The Italian Market is one part euro-grocery, one part deli, and half a part restaurant. I say half because while they have a really expansive menu with tons of tasty items that are perfect for a quick weekday lunch, everything is just reheated via microwave as it's ordered. The food is still pretty good but as a result of it's quick preparation, some dishes are slightly reminiscent of airplane meals which is never a good thing. The eating area is pretty tight, packed with uncomfortable chairs and tables that can be a little small even for a twosome. Service is limited to your food drop-off after it's ordered at the counter, and payment at the cash on your way out the door. I know that sounds like a whole lotta haterade but trust me, I never mind going to the Italian Market, it's just never high on my list. So take that for whatever it's worth... read more

The Italian Market is alright. I moved to Halifax from Ottawa a little over a year ago, Ottawa is home to a few really excellent Italian grocers, and The Italian Market isn't in the same realm as the ones in Ottawa. The Italian Market is a decent place to go if you're trying to cook an Italian dish with difficult to find ingredients, or if you want a sandwich or a piece of cake on the go. A few products I've tried include chicken parm sandwich and lemon pot de creme, as well as the premade chocolate chip cookies... All of which receive sterling reviews from me. However, I've also had a lot of "meh" food and the service can be pretty meh too. The spaghetti and meatballs which I've been told were "to die for" were mediocre at best, the spaghetti sauce wasn't overly flavourful and the portion was small for $8-9. The selection of Italian products isn't as big as the other Italian grocers I've been to, namely the meat and cheese section. However, I've not needed anything too exotic so I've never had an issue finding what I was looking for. The big issue I have is that it really is sooo overpriced. And pretentious! Not that I feel like thats any fault of the store itself, but rather the clientele it attracts. $5 for a can of San Marzano tomatoes, the fresh pasta is absolutely ridiculous in price, and I can recall a few times coming here with a certain ingredient in mind and walking out empty handed because the prices were too ridiculous. If you were to visit the Italian Market, I'd recommend visiting for their desserts, which have yet to disappoint. I am glad we have an Italian grocer in Halifax, but I wish there were others. read more

I came upon this market accidentally and decided to go in and see if they had the hot italian peppers that I have been searching for ever since I found some at Costco once (couldn't remember the brand and Costco never got them back after that one week that I found them). Anyway, I did buy a small jar which were high priced but to my amazement were exactly the flavour of peppers I was looking for! I Iove, love, love these peppers on a hot Italian sausage sandwich (Johnsonville sausages are the best ever for flavour)! I will certainly be stocking up on these peppers in case they disappear like they did from Costco! They probably aren't the same brand as the ones from Costco but they have the same flavour. I thought I wrote a review about the Italian Market but I guess I haven't. I felt compelled to because they now sell FRENCH MACARONS! And I must say, of the few places in Halifax that does sell them, they are the best ones in town! And cheapest! (almost 50 cents cheaper than the nearest priced competitor). It's nice because I do find most of their other food dishes to be a bit on the pricy side. I do enjoy the lasagna though (don't I always?) as it has certain spices on it that makes it stand out from other places and their lasagna. Also a nice variety of fun desserts like cakes, pies and puddings. And note that they do make a lot of the baked goods that are served in places around town. This is probably the only sandwich joint I go to on a regular basis. I really do need to discover more. However, this Italian market is a neat spot. Lets get the deli part done first. If you are looking for a sandwich this is the spot in the North End of the city. They have a number of options (cold or hot) which are pretty good. If you have time, you can sit down and try some of the prepared dished & salad. Note that during lunch time, this spot is BUSY. Get here early or late for best experience. My 2 favs sandwiches are world's best club & Vesuvius. Both run around the same price range of 8-9$ Beyond that, the market part of the store is actually stocked with a number of items you would come back on. Coffee, pasta and an impressive frozen section. If you are looking something italian to take to your kitchen, there must be something here for you. And as the grocery part goes I give it the thumbs up.You can find some unique, hard to find items here like ``00`` flour for pasta and pizza dough (sure you can use common flour, I just like the 00 better - it is finer). There are some nice chorizo and other meats to carry out for use in your own kitchen, some herbs and other spices that are at times more difficult to find in our normal grocery stores. I once worked at this Italian food mecca and loved being able to treat myself to a hearty veggie sandwich during my lunch breaks. Sometimes I would get an orzo salad, and some days the tomato and bocconcini - the options abounded and my decisions felt endless. There are lots of ready made items to get excited about at this market style cafe, located in a strip mall on Young Street. I am a huge cheese fiend, so relished the opportunity to buy wedges of serious fromage straight from the amply loaded display case. I'm not a meat connoisseur, but can appreciate the lust for deli-cuts after seeing tasty sammies constantly piled high with said ingredients. Not only can you get prepared grub, but also tons of grocery items from the market area. From olives to pastas to olive oil - there are so many options available it's bound to make any Italian food lover's head swoon. My only complaint is that top-quality ingredients are not used in the preparation of deli-foods. Personally, I prefer when there is at least an attempt to use organic or local whenever possible, but I'm fairly certain this isn't a priority at The Italian Market. Nonetheless, this is a fun and inspiring little market, sure to get you excited about cooking and eating in general. Had the spaghetti and meatballs! Want disappointed in the flavour at all. Could of had a little more noodles but I'm a heavy eater anyways! The meatballs were almost the same texture as the canned meatballs with gravy you buy at the grocery store but a lot bigger and the flavour of them was really good. Definitely better the canned ones. Had the garlic bread with it and it seemed pretty fresh. Came here a few days ago and got a MEATBALL PIZZA! First time having one and it was amazing! That's actually the reason why I came back today hoping to grab another slice of something but all the pizza was gone. All in all I've been here a few times and never had anything that I didn't like. The food here is amazing. ...when you get it. This is definitely a case of the service trumping the food. If the service weren't so slow, this would probably be a 4/5 instead of the 3/5. Every time I've gone, no matter how complicated the order, I've always had a lengthy wait. Even at less-busy times. And I don't even know how they could improve it because they have a ton of people behind the counter. Whatever, let's focus on the positive. The food is fantastic. The 'market' part is fantastic. The seating is ... crowded. I definitely suggest you allow the time for dessert. You won't regret it. Just make sure you have LOTS of time for lunch (or dinner) here. read more

As an update to Mike B.'s review, it seems as though the Italian Market has discontinued its line of macarons. Which is too bad, as they were easily the best thing about the place. I'm reviewing this from a restaurant perspective, not from a grocery store perspective, by the way. The grocery store half looks lovely and I'm sure would be a valuable resource, were I making Italian food on a regular basis. The restaurant side, though, is pretty average. Everything is pre-made and microwaved to order. I've never had anything that was outright bad, but I've never had anything that blew me away. I always think the grilled cheese is going to be some revelatory experience, but the bread never quite works for me. The desserts are pretty good, even though they've banished my favourite treat. I tend to like the smaller desserts, like the lemon pot du creme. And quite frankly, I just don't like the format. I feel awkward most of the time that I'm in there. It's sort of like a cafeteria-style restaurant, except that they bring the food to you after you've ordered at the counter. And then you pay at a different counter, likely after wondering if you're supposed to bring your dirty dishes somewhere. And ordering dessert is awkward, as I've found you pretty much need to go stand beside the dessert display and demand it. Anyway, yeah. I'll probably return at some point, but it's not a high priority. read more

Not a bad place, not a great place either. That pretty much sums up how I feel about the Italian Market's food side (I don't usually go to the grocery part). The staff are nice enough, although usually rushed. It's almost always busy and the seating is minimal. And a little uncomfortable. But the food is usually good and the sandwiches are made fresh. Just as a heads up - they do nuke their pastas and hot stuff in the microwave before you're served. Not made fresh right there, but made fresh each day in the back kitchen. My friend and I went for lunch today. I was hoping for the mushroom lasagna but there didn't seem to be any so I settled for a grilled sandwich. It was good. My Greek salad was over half olives, but still decently tasty. She had the roast beef sandwich and said it was very good. Her orzo, which I stole some of, was really delicious. Bills came to about $14 each so not too bad, but I think we'll try somewhere else next time. read more

I've never used the eat-in section of the Italian Market. I once took a cannolo with me with which was I was thoroughly unimpressed. Pricey and bland, nothing compared to what can be found in Southern Ontario. However, the Italian Market also has a grocery section. In addition to pasta and polenta (obviously) they sell various Italian-style sausages (as far as I'm aware they are all from Canada), frozen ravioli and other filled pasta (again from Canada), Loacker wafers from Italy (unfortunately much worse than Manner wafers from Austria), and many other Italian products. They also have a few products that are not typically Italian, such as stuffed grape leaves from Greece. Unfortunately many items are very expensive at the Italian Market. But they also have some decent deals. What are some of my favourite finds? The torrone isn't fantastic but it's good, and at $4.29 for a pack of 150g it has a decent price. I often go to the Italian Market to buy bread: they have very good baguettes for only $2.50, and their struan bread (a Scottish harvest bread) is absolutely wonderful ($4 for approx. 800g). So if you need Italian-style groceries or good bread, take a look at the Italian Market, but make sure to check the price labels before you go to the check-out. read more

I go here once every few months, and the part I get MOST excited for is the grocery area. The amazing italian ingredients and fun cooking supplies makes it completely worth the visit. The food/ restaurant side is also good, I feel like they have the same things every time I go, which is not a bad thing, but I tend to like to constantly try new things. I quite enjoy this place. Yes it is just counter service, and the food is prepared then reheated when you order. However the food is always delicious and the selection is great. Their gnocchi is spot on! But you have to get there within lunch hours to enjoy this. Not a fan of the atmosphere, but it works for a quick lunch spot. I think it does what it is intending to do, well. Prices are a tad bit high for what you would expect at a counter service but it is great quality for counter service lunch and the delicious food is worth the extra dollar or so. Love'n this place before Yelp even came along. Haven't been in over a year but went for lunch today and it's still as yummy as usual. This little spot is consistently good! Everything's fresh and delicious. My girlfriend and I decided on just splitting a salad and sandwich. Both were tasty and again.... fresh. AND lots of desserts to choose from. The place is always busy with people dining in and there's a constant flow of people grabbing goodies on the go. Try their club sandwich... it's REALLY GOOD! The staff are always smiling and pleasant too! If you want to grab a quick tasty lunch this is your place. If you don't want to cook dinner... pick it up here and heat it up at home! The Italian Market is just top-to-bottom nommy goodness. If you love Italian (and I love Italian!) you will love this little store. Fresh pizza dough. Fresh sauces. Fresh breads, cheeses and meats. Prices are on par with superior products, which is to say you pay more for the good stuff (and it's worth it). Staff have always been friendly and helpful. Walking into the Italian Market feels like you've stepped into the old country. In front of you are aisles of grocery goodness the likes of which you won't find elsewhere in Halifax. Imported pastas in every shape and size, oils, vinegars, canned tomatoes, crackers - they're all there for you to peruse before making a decision. To the left are the cold cases, which stock fresh pastas, sauces, dough and various sausages (fresh or frozen, depending on the day). In the back, you'll find the cheese case and the deli counter. Both have numerous choices that make the Italian Market unique - try the pâtés! We love having meals comprised exclusively of appetizers, so this week I stopped in and brought home some sliced genoa salami, some provolone, a couple of bags of croustinis and some pâté. We stuffed ourselves on it - it was so good. In the next case are several varieties of salads and next to them are fresh-made entrées available for eat-in or take-out. I find that their prices for ready-made items are on the high side - but that's to be expected in a niche market. Don't forget the baked goods case! Until recently, the Italian Market was the exclusive supplier of oatcakes to the Starbucks location in Clayton Park. (Unfortunately, that Starbucks has now gone corporate - and the oatcakes aren't nearly as good!) Also on offer are cannolis and cheesecakes - all sorts of treats to tempt you. When reviewing the Italian Market you need to break it down into two separate entities. The grocery portion and the dining portion. The grocery portion is great. There are a lot of varied and specialty items that you will not find anywhere else in Halifax. Shopping here for your Italian themed meal is about as authentic as you could possible get in our city. You'll be tossing pasta, adding olives and watching Who's The Boss (featuring noted Italian American Tony Danza) all night long. Definitely check this place out for your next home cooked meal. However, avoid the dine in or lunch experience. Cold pizza enters the microwave...actually, everything enters the microwave. You have no idea how long food has been sitting around. It's also very small portions at a rather steep price. The staff is friendly, but friendly only gets you so far. Let me stress again, a microwave! Come on, seriously? I would love to give the Italian Market higher marks (as a matter of fact, if it was just a grocery, I would!), but paying nearly 10 dollars for a warmed up piece of chicken and a Pepsi just doesn't cut it for me. I enjoy making Italian food at home, but the food here is something else. The three menu items I have tried so far were delicious! I recommend the Worlds Best Club as it will fill you up but also the chicken salad sandwich grilled. They have lovely smoked salmon pate from the deli. They have decadent desserts and can even make custom birthday cakes. But, if eating out isn't the move, then they have a great variety of Italian related ingredients, coffee & cooking supplies, and premade meals to use at home (the pizza dough is my favourite).
