Also my clinician called DCF and they told her that there was no reason for them to get involved and open a case. I then had a relapse - after unsuccessfully trying to get in touch with the NP which the clinician had suggested as she felt that I was depressed. After I relapsed, I just needed a break and I told them so. Well they went ahead and called DCF again. I went to this program willingly because I wanted and needed the help for my problem with alcohol and instead I felt like I just was getting kicked when I was already down. I just don't understand why they are so adamant about getting DCF involved. I have a wonderful relationship with my child and anyone who knows me know that. I have been sober since my relapse as I found better help elsewhere.

The staff is all amazing and completely passionate about their jobs, the grounds are GORGOUS, basically a castle with it's own city inside. If you are blind and live in a town where school is not available for special needs, your town is responsible for paying the tuition of any school that you are sent to. This includes the $100k a year tuition of Perkins, so DO IT. That is how my brother was able to go to such an exquisite school. You'd think they'd have built a program for the blind with the 1,500,000 they spent sending him to live and dorm in Watertown at Perkins, but good for us that they didn't. They taught him to swim (even with cerebral palsy), cook, read, sing and play instruments, grow plants, and make all kinds of one of a kind artwork, and just in general be the best he can be while growing his confidence. I can't thank them enough for their wonderful staff and the deep fondness and love that my brother has for his days at Perkins.

I can't comment on the therapeutic benefit of the Academy. We enrolled our son (CM) for about 9 months at the encouragement of his teachers. Enrollment is by quarter and paid in advance. Does my son have social problems? I don't think so. Did his social skills improve after he attended? Hard to say. Maybe he's a little less pigheaded and dominating. OK, here's what bothered me: We called the Academy for an initial meeting with the Director. We were assessing the place and its programs. It is a for-profit operation, although they promote the fact they provide training for graduate students from BC and other local colleges. We had a pleasant meeting and then a week or two later, I get a bill for $60. Here I am paying for the privilege to learn about the programs. I called to inquire, got an evasive answer but paid the bill anyway. Near the end, I ran into problems with one of the lead counselors. Very, very sanctimonious. Started hitting me with the mandated reporter threats. She only had a small snapshot of what was going on. I was dealing with something I was fully aware of and I didn't need the added stress of her threats. I am being purposely non-specific here. I know what the problem is and I have dealt with it successfully for many years. OK, lead counselor, you tell me I have a problem. I know I have a problem (the problem isn't with me or my child). So give me a solution to my problem. I bet she couldn't. Here's the stupidity...if you are going to threaten me at an activity that is voluntary on my part, I'm not going to come back. I'm not going to put myself or my son in harms way. They say they're good, and if they say they're good, they must be good. Don't believe it. And trust your gut about your child. And his or her teachers.

Something we can't fully claim from working with a couple of child psychologists in the past. Every kid is different, but it seems that an environment with a group of peers was a better place to learn and mature socially, at least in our case. The program that we were in definitely works. The Academy was very helpful to us. We've received some great parenting ideas and strategies. All in all, we can highly recommend the program. It's not for every child, definitely not, but if you child struggles to keep up with his peers socially, this might be a good place to try. As far as billing issues mentioned in one of the reviews here, we've never had any issues. It's a small organization, it's not a retail business, but we've never had any customer service issues. In fact, we have always been able to easily get in touch with someone via phone or email.

My advice to potential students - and this honestly goes against my own ethos: if you're not vibing with one of the instructors, try another! Inconsistent, Unprofessional, and Ultimately a Waste of Time & Money…read more I am writing this review on behalf of my father, a retired military Veteran from India, who just completed 7 lessons with Brookline Driving School. Unfortunately, his experience was overwhelmingly disappointing and I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere. Our primary issue was the complete lack of consistency between instructors. He had at least three different teachers, primarily switching between Ervin and Vitaly. While Ervin was patient and seemed to genuinely enjoy teaching, the same cannot be said for his counterpart. Vitaly was, frankly, obnoxious. He lacked basic respect for his students, was often loud and visibly frustrated, creating an environment where my father felt intimidated and unable to ask questions. If you don't have the patience for this job, why are you in it? To make matters worse, he made uncalled-for and stereotypical "jokes" about Indians being bad drivers, which was completely unprofessional and offensive. The biggest practical problem arose from this inconsistency. Ervin and Vitaly taught completely different techniques for parallel parking. One would say to do it one way, and the next lesson, the other would contradict it. This constant change in instruction confused my father daily and shattered his confidence. The culmination of this failure was on his road test. He failed specifically because of the parallel parking maneuver. The conflicting advice from his own instructors left him unsure of the correct method, leading to a critical error. I hold Brookline Driving School 100% responsible for this. We are cutting our losses and heeding our neighbors' recommendation to try Waltham Driving School instead. Save your time, your money, and your sanity--go somewhere else. This school is unorganized and employs instructors who are not aligned, with at least one who lacks the basic demeanor required to teach.
