He is a former wildlife and marine biologist, and knew a lot about the history of the area, something we were really interested in. We saw bald eagles, puffins, otters, seals and many other types of birds. Also got to visit Halibut cove and Gill Island. Glen also followed COVID-19 protocols, which was extremely important for us. A highlight of the trip was a great salmon dip that Glen had made for us, and also all the his stories. We would definitely recommend Glen if you want to do a wildlife tour in the Kachemak Bay from Homer.

Beware the Catch-a-Lot Bear Viewing rip-off! My wife and I…read morewere duped by the false advertising inn their website and in conversation with the owner/captain. He suggested that we should be prepared to walk up to a mile to see the bears at the Clark reserve. What he neglected to tell us was that the walk would be from the boat to the shore through deep mud and muck in chest-high water as the boat anchored off shore. My wife trudged to shore with the group and encountered an unpleasant surprise: The guide was terrified of bears!!! While other tours arrived and approached a rather tame bear within 20 feet, our guide kept the group a quarter of a mile away from the bear, threatening them with being attacked if they approached any closer. My wife returned after 2-3 hours on shore (famished--not permitted to bring a snack along) and showed me a picture of the bear she had taken--It was a tiny brown dot on the shoreline! She confirmed that this was the closest they were allowed by the guide. He also spent a great deal of time in a panic trying to contact the boat via radio without reply--He had neglected to turn on the receiver. I was unable to accompany my wife on shore, though I was charged for the tour. Before we boarded the boat for the tour I told the owner/captain that my right foot is prosthetic, and he said that would not be an obstacle. I regularly walk and hike more than a mile, so I accepted his invitation to join the group. However, . I was unable to maintain my footing in the muck (not surprising) and was forced to stay on the boat, viewing a couple of bears through binoculars at a great distance. The website also suggested exciting wildlife viewing of many marine mammals during the trip--In fact, we sped full-speed to and from with no sign of marine mammals. Prior to the trip, during the collect-your-money phase, the owner/captain was frequently available via phone and email to answer all questions. After the trip, he refused to reply to any of several attempts to discuss compensation for the scam advertising. We learned later from folks who lodged at Clark reserve that the bears there are quite tame--the residents greet them by name, and one can approach without fear. We later saw, close, marvelous brown bears at Eagle River nature center, north of Anchorage, where they run wild, fish for salmon in the streams, and thereby reward a beautiful hike. The fee there is 5 dollars. NOTE: The owner/manager's replied to my previous review by claiming that we did not book and participate in the awful tour. We DID book and participate in the tour and have a payment receipt and booking confirmation to prove that. Shame on him for trying to cover up with a lie.

So patrick our knowledgable, good natured, indulging guide asked us how far wed like to walk, how much talking did we wanna hear, and if we had specific interests. I let him know we'd love to see the big guys if possible ( bear moose) n I'd love to know if there's anything I can eat along the way. While we didn't see any bears he did show us poop and tracks, and showed us the way willows grow with moose feeding off them. He pointed out a ton of plants that were tasty, of nutritional importance to the first alaskans or early settlers or todays subsistence populations, n plants that were deadly poison used to hunt whalesn or painful enough that we didn't want to wander into them. He showed us a plant that survives from the jurassix age ( soooo cool), showed us bogs and explained exactly what bogs and other types of wetlands are. All that education made this hike much richer than our usual go it alones.

We made a day of it, driving to Homer from Kenai, making our way through beautiful country, till the vista opens up and you see the breathtaking 180 degree view of the Kenai Mountains - jagged iron black mountains covered with snow and glaciers over the blue Kachemak Bay. A short drive through town and you end up on the Homer Spit, reaching far out into the Bay. With tours and artisan stores abounding, we opted for our reservation on the Danny J. The staff, many of whom are talented artists in their own right, were friendly, talented, and knowledgeable. In addition to skillful ocean navigation, one of the deck crew navigated around a full fledged two-year-old tantrum by carefully working her through wearing a life vest. The one hour ride across the bay to Halibut Cove included a full circle of Bird Rock, where Murres, Cormerants, Gulls, and even Puffins abound. We also saw sea otters playing. Hike and picnics in Halibut Cove if your budget is tight, or go ahead and eat at the Saltry - the food is fresh, home grown, home baked, with a big focus on sea food - but a bit spendy. Many artist studios and stores are within walking distance - all on the multi-level board walk - so enjoy and buy a few things. Get back on the boat at 4 pm for a quick half hour trip back to Homer (sans bird tour). This adventure as up there as one of our most memorable, most perfect travel days ever. He found us Common Murrelets, a Long-tailed Jager, ayellow-billed loon, marbled murrelets, Glaucous-Winged Gulls, (also commonly seen at the pier); Black-legged Kittiwakes (ditto), Harlequin Ducks, Barrow's Golden-eyes, Brants, Pelagic & Red-faced Cormorants, Tufted & Horned Puffins. You buy your fishing tags at the office and it lets you catch 2 halibuts and 1 king Salmon. We went out about 25 miles out to do our fishing. The capitan was a great host he lets us drink beers and we all had a great time. Be sure to pack a lunch since all there required is to get ya on the fish. After fishing for 4 hrs we cruised up the inlet to try our luck on salmon. Out of 10 of us on the boat I was the only one to catch a 24lb king salmon. After we got back to the dock they filet the fish for ya. If your looking to ship back your fish they will take care of all shipping for ya. Old captain that seemed to rub people the wrong way is gone and retired. Fools gold was our ship, and was in fine enough condition, head was clean, plenty of room for the people in and out. We had the pleasure of being with Capitan Dave C. and Deckhand/first mate Ash. The two of them really made the trip incredible. We went with a group size of 7 plus a baby, and they were both insanely accommodating to the little one, let us setup a pack and play in the berth, even checked in on her when we were out fishing and she was sleeping. Tons, and I mean tons, of great conversations, hysterics laughter, and learning a boat load about the area, the fish types, everything under the moon, honestly. Both of them gave clean and consice rules, what to do, where to be in the boat, showed us how to bait, where to land the catch. Very patient folks, and made this excursion top notch. If you want to go halibut fishing, and want to have a good time, go with them. You'd be making a mistake to go with anyone else. Tl;dr: Awesome crew, awesome fish, very nice and would never fish with anyone else given the choice. All limited out, every one of us, with some impressive catches.

We saw 10 bears, including a mama and her two playful cubs. We were soo impressed with Chris, his bear knowledge and piloting skills, that again July 2017 we arranged for another bear viewing. This time we went to Lake Clark National Park. Again, it was an amazing trip. This time we saw 18 bears. Two sets of mamas and cubs. This is a must do if you are in the Homer area.
