We made a day of it, driving to Homer from Kenai, making our way through beautiful country, till the vista opens up and you see the breathtaking 180 degree view of the Kenai Mountains - jagged iron black mountains covered with snow and glaciers over the blue Kachemak Bay. A short drive through town and you end up on the Homer Spit, reaching far out into the Bay. With tours and artisan stores abounding, we opted for our reservation on the Danny J. The staff, many of whom are talented artists in their own right, were friendly, talented, and knowledgeable. In addition to skillful ocean navigation, one of the deck crew navigated around a full fledged two-year-old tantrum by carefully working her through wearing a life vest. The one hour ride across the bay to Halibut Cove included a full circle of Bird Rock, where Murres, Cormerants, Gulls, and even Puffins abound. We also saw sea otters playing. Hike and picnics in Halibut Cove if your budget is tight, or go ahead and eat at the Saltry - the food is fresh, home grown, home baked, with a big focus on sea food - but a bit spendy. Many artist studios and stores are within walking distance - all on the multi-level board walk - so enjoy and buy a few things. Get back on the boat at 4 pm for a quick half hour trip back to Homer (sans bird tour). This adventure as up there as one of our most memorable, most perfect travel days ever. (I'm 62 and have never, ever kayaked, and I felt very comfortable the whole time.) Rick is a great safety conscious guide and teacher and pleasant host. His love for his "back yard" is evident as he shares the sites as you leisurely paddle around Tutka Bay. You see and and can touch all types of star fish, photograph anemones, commune with otters, and enjoy breathtaking scenery. Then you help gather a variety of beach plants to go in the salmon and rice soup prepared right on the beach by his assistants. It is served with homemade bread. After visiting firsthand, an observation I'll make is that the odds are against seeing a lot of bears up close. The bad part of my experience is that the owner, Gabe, was a complete jerk. I called the only contact number with questions 3 times over two days (no answer) and texted at least 3 times. Received only one text reply which was a sarcastic response without answering my questions. No reply to follow up texts. For this reason, I would never consider paying him any more money for bear or fishing trips. Go with someone else.

So patrick our knowledgable, good natured, indulging guide asked us how far wed like to walk, how much talking did we wanna hear, and if we had specific interests. I let him know we'd love to see the big guys if possible ( bear moose) n I'd love to know if there's anything I can eat along the way. While we didn't see any bears he did show us poop and tracks, and showed us the way willows grow with moose feeding off them. He pointed out a ton of plants that were tasty, of nutritional importance to the first alaskans or early settlers or todays subsistence populations, n plants that were deadly poison used to hunt whalesn or painful enough that we didn't want to wander into them. He showed us a plant that survives from the jurassix age ( soooo cool), showed us bogs and explained exactly what bogs and other types of wetlands are. All that education made this hike much richer than our usual go it alones.

I tried to book a couple of days at our usual spot in Homer this past weekend, to no avail. In fact…read moremost places were full. I prefer to have a full hookup site, as I have a CPAP machine, and plugging into electrical is preferable. I found 1 spot at Ocean Shore, and we'd never stayed there before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The price is thereabouts the same as where we normally stay, and with all the same sort of facilities, laundry, showers, bathrooms etc. on the map of available spots, there was only 1 remaining, and by my reckoning, it appeared to be in a somewhat desirable location within the park. By that I mean that there are some sites very close to the beach walk, and with a sea view directly out of the window, and not a view of the RV parked next to you. I had managed to score site 64, which had no other sites to one side of us - meaning we had a lovely sea view. Initially I thought there was something wrong, and that when we arrived, the camp host would tell me there'd been an error with the booking software. But such was not the case, we really did have an excellent site, with a perfect view, and very close to the beach walk. However if your objective is to be close to the showers, laundry, coffee shop etc, this is not the best one. I don't know how many times I've driven past this place on the main road in Homer. I really didn't know how nice it was. The camp host literally got in her car and drove us to our site, and she then marshalled my husband into the spot perfectly. And the sites are nicely leveled out too. The trash dumpster is very close to this site, as is the doggy doo bag station. Something I noticed at this place, is that all the occupants were very friendly. I don't see that too much in other places here. Our neighbours informed us that we were now blocking their lovely sea view (jokingly) and also, that someone must have canceled, for us to have gotten the "best spot" which I have to agree with. The internet here is superb. I'm not kidding, it's better than ours at home. Streaming media with no interruptions or buffering. This is the best internet I've ever experienced in any RV park. And it's free. Denali Rainbow Village gives you half an hour free, and then you have to pay, and it's more expensive up there than it is here, without the beautiful sea view., because you get an Alaska Resident discount down here. I was told also by our neighbours that it's usually difficult to get a spot here, because people book a year in advance. So I know what I have to do if I want to stay here next year. Really nice park with great facilities, helpful staff, and I hope to stay again

We were on a six pack with three other gentleman and it was a great day since the boat got three 40-50 lbs halibut (my son's was a largest, the Trophy fish). We did get some salmon, rock cod later but they were pink and silver salmon not King. Still a lot of fun and good eating! They are connected with the Homer Fish Processing operation on the Sterling Highway on your way into the spit. Easy. Nice. Recommend!

My hubby was so happy - he caught a beautiful 15 pound King Salmon and Gary and his assistant Jonah, were very instrumental in landing that fish. We had to get up early to get to the fishing spot and once there, Gary explained the rules and regulations and gave great instructions on what to do. Gary and Jonah were so helpful and everyone in our party caught a fish, the biggest being a 22 pounder! We never felt rushed at all. As a matter of fact, my hubby was the last to catch a fish and Gary and Jonah both were patient and were giving him tips on what he could do. So glad that we went with Silverfin Guides. We will definitely be using Gary again on our next trip.

Bathrooms were super clean, some of the cleanest I've seen. Firewood is for sale for $5 at the camp host site if you need some. When we arrived the place was dead, which we didn't know was a good thing or a bad thing. By 9pm we could hear a few more people show up but our site was covered with trees we couldn't see them and vice versa. Overall, really nice place and has many secluded sites to choose from. Price is $15 a night and check out is noon. General store is up the road less than 5 miles in case you need to pick up last minute things. Will definitely come again if we're in the area.
