Made strong, flavorful Colombian brew, dark in the pot, they didn't skimp on ground beans in the filter!! I saw fried chicken offered, though I didn't have time to try it. Junk experience today with guy working the back counter where all the hunting knives are. Asian looking guy with glasses. I was looking for a sharpening steel. Rather than be kind and helpful, he was fake kind and pretty much accused me of not being descriptive enough. It's not like he had 20 models to show. He could have easily, with good service, just showed me what they had. I was certainly motivated to drive to Kurtistown from Hilo to purchase this sharpener. After this experience, I will not spend any money beyond fried chicken at J Hara. I'll go to Tokunaga first. If they don't have, I'll order online. I pau with J Hara. Then I found out they offered military discount (aka first responders discount) like tokunagas do so even more I would shop there since I am a veteran and a first responder. But recently found out that they only give these discounts out for only certain items in the store which is only a few things they sell. Not even for a pack of bubble gum. Lol. I feel like was deceived and lied to by them. That is a disappointment. All these years I thought I was getting 10% discount on the thousands of dollars i spent there over the years but wasn't.. Thats what I get for not looking at my receipts. This most definitely changes how and where I shop. Dont get me wrong...I love their crew especially in the sporting good section. Good guys. I feel like they hire younger women just to make their petty coins to keep buisness going. young girls covered in ugly tattoos with stingy and mean attitudes because they don't know math and can't read the correct codes for simple items like a bar of soap. He's definitely the man to set you up with EVERYTHING you need to get right out there and start catching fish! I was really surprised at what great prices they had on fishing poles. We got 2 really awesome Ugly Stick 10 footers for $39.99. The cheapest I could find the same pole online was $59.99. Of course, they have really high end shit as well! I normally go to J. Hara store for food or drinks because it's located in a convenient area. They also have a variety of groceries, which helps when you need something right away! This store is usually busy but the cashiers that helped me are usually nice and say thank you before you leave. But this recent experience wasn't very pleasant. The cashier didn't really say anything and after I paid I was just handed my change and receipt. No "thank you" or anything. I will probably return in the near future for convenience purposes, but wouldn't expect best customer service. They should provide cashiers with customer service training or hopefully next time, I'll be assisted by a more pleasant cashier. ‍ read more

I've finally had enough bad experiences here to write a bad review. The food products are all 99 cent store "brands" but are the same price as name brand stuff at the grocery store. I live right down the street but frequently drive all the way to keaau just to avoid the j hara price gouging. Some of the staff are nice enough, but others are straight up rude, which I'd be willing to excuse if they did their jobs effectively... but they don't. Today I literally stood at the register for 10 minutes while a line formed behind me all the way down the aisle and around to the next aisle because the cashiers could not figure out how to make one of the registers work, and when Doreen the checkout lady finally came back over to my register, she wouldn't even look at me, let alone say "thank you for your patience" or even acknowledge that I was there. I don't really care if store employees keep their heads down and just do their job, they're not getting paid to socialize, but people who have such poor customer service skills that they can't even say hello to a customer who's been standing at a register for 10 minutes with no explanation should probably stay in the stock room. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. The owner had promised a sale price for an item that was out of stock. The owner, Jeff then changed his mind when the item was in stock. We left a deposit and still have the receipt for it. He refused to sell it at the sale price and instead gave us back our deposit. This was not some small item, it was for fishing supplies priced at over $1000. The worse part is he didn't even explain why and instead let his employees tell us that Jeff changed the price. This spin less action even made the situation worse. I have heard similar stories from other people with price switching done by the owner Jeff. Buyer beware, stay away from J. Hara Store-they are deceitful. read more

I've only visited once but this store is cool - they've got everything from camo gear to groceries to office supplies. Hubby wanted to check out the camo gear. He said, "We can't leave Hilo without going J. Hara!" Great stop if you need some groceries or other random items (I.e. Lemon and a loofah, which is what my purchase consisted of!) .... AND the loofah was only $.99! :) I appreciate these cute mom and pop stores that have been around for some time. read more

This store is has been an integral part of the community for several generations.. But I was devastated when they took down the bulletin board. It was an important communication tool for the whole community. I found employment and sold a vehicle using it. I believe they lose customers by removing the board as people would stop to read it and end up buying something. It provided a great community service.
