Vintage Heaven

Think you can open a new vintage shop eh? Think you're special do you? "Vintage Heaven indeed!" I…read morewas prepared to scoff after leaving this new store. I had to eat these words before they even came out of my mouth. Vintage Heaven does live up to its name by being not only very competitively priced but also stocked to the brim with goodies. They even have bloomers and although some people might draw the line at second hand pants, I say if you're going to do it, do it right. You could actually get an entire outfit here from bloomers to coat and hat for under £100 although you might be put off trying it on in their skanky cupboard of a fitting room. Despite that little inconvenience, I have to say, I am rather impressed and this shop might even make it possible on a rainy day to knock off walking all the way down Cheshire Street to Beyond Retro.

If you want to experience the true essence of vintage then Vintage Heaven is the place to be.

Tucked away in Greenwich Market is this cute little two-shop vintage/second hand establishment. It's well laid out and un-cluttered. I loved this shop for all the army/military gear it has and if I was still into my Am-Dram I would be here every week to steal new stock for costume. Now I didn't purchase anything here on my visit, because I am poor, but I did see some great items at reasonable prices. Like most vintage shops its got your mock/real furs and granny jumpers and tweed jackets. However it has some great choice pieces and lovely little bits and bobs.

They don't have a big range of clothing, and was nice to see that you don't have to rummage through stuff. The left side of the store was more elegant, more of the 1930s and 40s era. The clothes are pricey a dress could easily be £55 but the quality of the garment is well preserved. If I'm in Greenwich again, ill shall pop and who knows I might come away with something.
Soho Vintage

Soho Vintage, well, it kinda ticks my boxes. It's not huge but it has a decent enough selection. It also seems to stock some great men's wear. Need a leather jacket? You'll find one here boys. The shop is hidden off a back street and can be missed but if you're in the area it's worth popping in. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful if a little distracted by the phone. Vintage enthusiasts, check out this space!
Yesterday I happened upon a perfectly respectable little vintage store hidden away on an an…read moreotherwise abandoned and un-trafficked corner of Soho. Encouraged by an easel sign on the busy Broadwick Street, I headed down the quiet Ingestre Place to the open door (and arms) of Soho Vintage. The tiny space was filled with a plethora of styles. From an antique Victorian skirt to the 80s off-the-shoulder sweatshirts that are all the rage right now, Soho Vintage represented all. The prices were a bit on the dear side but, considering its prime location in Soho, not surprisingly so. If you find something you absolutely must have, a little light haggling might work for you here, since the shop is so small - rue the fact that those vintage boots are £35 and you might get them for £30. Overall, this proved to be a solid vintage store with a wide variety of items (at a variety of price ranges) that belied the shop's size.

The menswear section is particularly strong and dominates most of the store with very reasonable Burberry marino wool v-necks and check shirts for only £15, and a vast selection of tweed and wool suits priced from £65 to £100. Wool hats are beautifully displayed on mannequin heads, whilst smaller accessories such as cuff links and handkerchiefs are kept behind glass cabinets. The womenswear selection is smaller- with only a few small rails devoted to evening wear. What pieces they do have though, are exquisite- I tried on a delicate green, silk 1940s tea-dress which for £65 was an absolute bargain. There is however a very good selection of outerwear- there are some beautiful fake-fur coats for under £75 and some immaculate raincoats for under £80. Everything in the shop is beautifully presented and smart. There is no rummaging through rails of rubbish to find items, just a few well-chosen, classic pieces displayed beautifully.

That said, there's a lot of stuff. All of the dresses are well looked after in those plastic cases, but I find that such a pain. I know it protects them blah blah blah. but I want to go through clothes being all touchy feely. It's part of the fun. I hate that I can't do that in here. The guys stuff seems better. The shirts are cool and the whole shop does the indie boy in Greenwich thing very well. It's pretty pricey in here, but that's because the stuff is very good quality. It's almost too good - there's something lovely about vintage clothes that need a little repairing maybe that's just me. Do go in and take a look around. You might not find the perfect piece, but you'll have fun trying on cool shades and hats. Which is an equally important part of shopping.

It is a funny old place but definitely worth a rummage through.

You can't ditch you lousy binbags of unwanted tat here but you can bring items in to sell to them. A lot of new clothes and shoes. It is a more economically sound way of reusing items and passing them on. I'm a keen charity shopper but I think there is also a need for shops like this.

On a mission to find an outfit for a Mad Men party I was soon fitted up by the owner, Lee, with a vintage figure hugging sheath dress that Peggy would have been proud of. I found a silk scarf to tie round my neck and some patent court shoes. Result. There is so much stuff in this treasure trove the V&A could probably fill any gaps in their collection if they knew it existed. The guys who came to do the moving were nice, lovely, attentive, polite. As soon as I pointed out some of the things were fragile, they told me: "We treat everything as fragile" and that's true! Not everything was packed properly by me but it all arrived perfectly intact. They took exactly the time I thought to load/unload, they showed to me how everything was secured in the van, then I went on the van with them to the new destination. They even wanted to place the boxes in separate areas in my new flat! No need really, it's a studio flat... All they asked for afterwards was to quickly wash their hands, I even offered them a drink (it was bloody hot and still they didn't sweat a bit!) but they kindly refused, off to the next job. Also, they asked me to go and check the van before they left, to make sure they haven't left/stolen anything. I would've paid even double for such a service!
