This is one of my favorite places in Chelsea. Jim gives a great haircut. Among the best I've had. But the reason to go is for the richness and depth of discussion. Jim is a great talker. Honestly, I'd give this place seven stars if possible. It's a real man-a-mano conversation with another human being. It's an experience we rarely get in this modern world. One of the other reviewers says that Jim can talk about anything. I can assure you that there is one thing you better not mention, even if Jim is the one who brings it up... Our son, a college student, had been getting his hair cut by Jim for many months. He went in on 9/21 for a haircut. Jim asked him what had been going on with him. Our son said he was being kept busy with U of M studies and his internship for the RNC. After being told he was "getting in bed with the devil" and our son politely disagreeing, Jim proceeded to insist that all Republicans are afraid of minorities, are fascist, and went on a rant culminating with him saying he would finish the haircut without charge but our son needed to leave his shop and never come back. Once this came to our attention, my husband called to try to speak to Jim about it. He became immediately aggressive and defensive, insulting our son anew and then denying that it happened. (Kind of hard to insult the kid again and then deny that the situation ever took place...) He was given the chance to explain his thought process and why he felt it was reasonable to kick out a college kid based on where he's doing his internship, but he lost his temper within seconds, and that was that. I will say that the haircut, a nice high reg (our son models himself after my husband, a United States Marine Corps veteran), was always great. Jim can definitely do a high reg you can set your watch by. Sadly, he's also a bigoted loudmouth who does not want conservative dollars, even if he is the one who starts the conversation down the political path. (Our son simply mentioned where he was interning. Jim could have easily made the choice to change the subject. He chose to go off on an ignorant rant against a college kid who just wanted a haircut.) If you are conservative, Jim does not want you in his shop. If you go anyway, be prepared to watch what you say. read more

Classic barbershop in downtown Chelsea. I've been getting my haircut here for about three years, and am never disappointed with the cut. Jim, the owner, is old school from the banter to using the straight razor to trim your hairline. Great conversationalist, and remembers his customers. He gives the kind of personalized service that you fear isn't part of life anymore, which makes it all the more precious. He's also incredibly reasonably priced. I get a cut as good as other much more expensive salons I've tried, but for half or less the cost. Jim doesn't take call aheads, and the hours can be a little tough for folks with a day job. During the week he's open from 10-5, but he might come in a little late or leave a little early. Not a big deal, he's there plenty. Sometimes there's a wait, but that's half the pleasure as you sit with other people in old theater seats and talk about things ranging from history to sports to travel to politics and more. This place is worth the visit once for the ambiance alone, much less the quality service that you get. read more

He did give a good haircut, however, I found him to be overly opinionated and he talked too much. To be honest, I was offended. He didn't seem to care about that, though, or even realize it. It was more important for him to talk about his subject than have a repeat customer, I guess. Oh well. I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend going there, however, I see that others have had better experiences, so maybe it was just a fluke. read more
