Probably one of the worst haircuts I've ever received. Yeah the place was cool but the cut was uneven and not executed well.

I did not get my hair cut here, but I did get a flat tire in front of this business. The barbers came out and helped me change my tire (after finishing the client's haircut). They also walked me through how to change a tire in case it ever happened again. These guys are so incredibly nice. 10/10 would pop a tire in front of this barber shop again. Brought my child here for a haircut today based on the fact that it's the most highly rated barbershop in Ann Arbor. I was very descriptive about what I wanted and the youngish barber just butchered his hair. I told him I wanted to scissor cut and he had clippers out and going before I even sat down. My son's hair was so uneven and messed up that I had to have him go over it again just so that they could even it up properly or as best as possible. I hate cutting my hair. I feel like I am paying some dude $20 bucks to remove a few strands of protein from my head that will just grow back in a couple of weeks anyways. First rule of getting swole: never lose protein. Also, I generally do not like it when people stand too close behind me. Especially if they are looking at and touching my neck. It gives my spine a shiver and makes me uncomfortable. In fact, I can imagine a future where barbers are a thing of the past. People 100 years from now will look back on the history of man and say "psssht. how stupid. They had to go in every month and pay money to cut hair?" The future will have some type of thing that enables you to permanently style your hair without any loss or growth. However, until then, if you are a dude, Coach & 4 is the best place to go to in Ann Arbor. They are experts at conversation, take their sweet time doing a good job, and have refreshments in a refrigerator. BE SURE TO COME AT A NON-PEAK TIME. The simple service they offer is all that you need: a great cut and straight razor shave, with a chat about Michigan football or hockey if you're in the mood. I just took my 19 month old son here for his first hair cut. Since my son is known for his intense and loud personality, I was expecting the worst -- screaming, crying with half a hair cut. I was pleasantly surprised when AJ, his barber, not only completed the hair cut, but did so without one tear! AJ was quick (finished in less than 10 minutes) and did a great job reassuring my temperamental toddler. My son and I didn't take advantage of the free beer and Playboy magazines that some of the other reviewers mentioned, but a quick and terrific hair cut is more than enough for us to return for my son's next hair cut. read more

I lived above this place my senior year at UofM and it was the best haircut I've gotten in town and I've been to Aveda, Nogginz, and State Street Barber Shop (ironically owned by Jerry's , the owner, cousin). The place has beer and water in the fridge, free for the taking. It has Playboys and Maximums on the coffee table made from old hockey sticks and a big flat screen with ESPN always playing. James, one of the younger barbers, is unreal. He has a real passion for cutting hair and doesn't nickle and dime you. I SERIOUSLY recommend his straight razor shaves. He is a master with that thing and always gives me the best shaves. It's a little scary and first, but just trust him and you'll be amazed. read more

I have walked by Coach and Four for years and wondered what it would be like to get an old-school barbershop style haircut, and I'm sorry I waited this long. There were no salon-style frills (though I did get my neckline detailed with a straight razor and shaving cream - old school style) and no forced smalltalk - just 20 minutes and I was done. Brian (the guy who cut my hair) did a great job. I'd have to say this was one of th better haircuts I've gotten in a while, probably because the Coach and his staff cater to a mostly male clientèle. While walking up to this place it just exudes a feel of an old school barbershop. Upon my move up here I needed to find a good barbershop and Coach and Four is just that! You walk in and there is a TV playing whatever game is on and Michigan sports memorabilia covering the walls. You have a seat and are pretty quickly offered a cold beer. If that wasn't enough to make me feel at home, I was immediately included in the conversations with everyone about the upcoming college football season. Just a few minutes later I was called up for my haircut. The barber asked what I wanted and verified the lengths so there was no misunderstanding. The haircut was awesome and the conversations was fun. I definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a great haircut from a good neighborhood shop. Just left from my first cut here, and I was pleasantly surprised. My usual stylist (my step-mom!) is out of town, and I've got some job interviews coming up and didn't want to risk it with Douglas J as I have all too many times before. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE I CARE ABOUT. WOULD RECOMMEND TO PEOPLE WHO ARE OBLIVIOUS Really eccentric place with a lot of history and tradition. I respect that the people working there know0 what they're doing and have been making a positive impact on the community. That being said, I went in for a haircut today and was treated like a black sheep. I went on my work break and wanted to get my haircut at a barber. I have been having the same person cut my hair for years and decided to change it up. I regret it. Cash only so I had to go to the ATM down the street and get cut in line. When I did eventually get my time I was very nervous. He did an OK job and he was a nice guy, James I think. He cut my next with the trimmer and it is STILL BOTHERING ME AS I TYPE. Am I supposed to be OK with this? No that sucks. I was at work so I was in formal attire and they looked down on me. Now I'm not some overly-sensitive millenial that crys over spilled but I do know when I am different and not welcomed. Customer service is something that this place needs more of. I get it, you've had lots of people and you've been around a long time and people know this place. Blah blah blah. Convenience for U of M students is great because it's close to campus, but the haircut wasn't great. They cut the top of my hair too short after I told them not to. Additionally, I had to wait over an hour even when I had an appointment because two barbers were cutting each others' hair. read more

I just came back from Coach/Fours and I have to say that this place is the best by far. After a terrible experience at a downtown Ann Arbor salon, I asked my dad where he went for a trim when he was a student. He said Coach & Four, so away I went. I walk in, and as I sit down I'm offerred a beer - I can't turn that down. The barber (the shop's founder's son) did his best to fix the terrible haircut I got at another store. He was also very friendly. While I sat there, random friends of the staff wandered in to say hi and chat, including my barber's wife. Very relaxing atmosphere. I finished up, paid, and was reminded to come in for a beer anytime. I might just do that. We'll see how they do when I have more hair to cut, but I really appreciated the $5 trim/haircut repair, and the awesome atmosphere. Listen- a barber is a cherished thing to a man. New in town I tried some options after the barber here I liked relocated. Mistake. Got butchered - came back with a lawn mower done bowl cut- James at coach and four cleaned it the heck up- made me regret every trying anything else. James Gordie and anyone else at this shop is better than the next five around... and that's just talking haircut and affordability. The shop is loaded with atmosphere - wolverine memorabilia and Hockey classic stuff. Fridge loaded with beer. I will not get my haircut anywhere else again while I'm in A2. Usually a simple barber shop haircut - a fade, crewcut, Caesar, high and tight, etc - is just fine. It's alright, it works, it's cheap, whatever. That's not true at Coach and Four, though. Their haircuts are simple, basic and old-school - but they're anything but "just fine." You walk out of there and you're like, "MAN this haircut is AWESOME!" The guys are quick, friendly and they give the most precise haircuts around - for $11 a pop!! You can't beat that in this town. They definitely don't do anything funky, hip, different or artistic - but they do the basic stuff perfectly. I've now lived in Ann Arbor close to 3 years. I've tried numerous barber shops around town. A buddy of mine told me about this place and I never followed up until today. Man have I been missing out. The place is decked out in blue & maize, has antique barber chairs, old school barbers, and a regular crowd that hangs out. My cut turned out great. Given with scissors and a hot lathered straight razor shave around the edges. This is a real barber shop with Playboy on the table, free coffee, and rumor has it you can get a nice cold beer if you go in the afternoons/evenings. All that for $16. Okay, now that I'm not a complete rookie, I gave this place another try. Stayed loyal to my fellow yelpers and seeing as how Coach & Four has such great reviews, I conceded and admitted that I was naive and the review I had was unfair. I came back here for a buzz cut, you know, because it's easier to roll out of bed, toss on clothes and get out the door without having to style a buzz cut. $12. That's all it cost. Well, $12 and tip (styled cuts are $16). They're attentive to detail here, and would make your cuts look clean. The guys here are down to earth and can strike up conversation easily. Don't let the old man anywhere near your beard! I've been here 3 times for beard trims, with 3 different barbers. The first one was decent. 2nd one was subpar. 3rd was was a complete disaster. It took the old man 5 minutes to destroy the beard that had taken me 6 months to grow. He sent me out with an uneven, rushed, sloppy job, after buzzing away most of my substantial beard. Time to hang it up, old man. I will never return here. If you are looking for a place that knows beards, keep on looking. This is an amazing old school joint and a Michigan landmark, the barber was quick yet paid attention to detail and a hard to find hot towel neck shave with the haircut. The barbers are friendly and the shop is very chill. 16$ for a student, 12$ for a buzz, and 17$ for standard cut. I don't trust many people with my hair, but after relocating to Ann Arbor I needed to find a new place for haircuts. Based on Yelp reviews, I chose Coach & Four and I could not be happier. I walked in on a Tuesday morning around 9am and it was empty. Jerry sat me right away and asked what type of cut I wanted. I pulled out a picture I had on my phone, gave him a few more details, and he started cutting away. The final cut looks fantastic. My hair is not complicated, but I cannot remember the last time my first cut with a new barber was perfect. This one is. And Jerry finished the cut with a straight razor touch up... classy. I will be returning for all future haircuts while in Ann Arbor. I cannot recommend highly enough.
