What age do you accept for piano lessons?

Hi Anna: Every teacher has different strengths regarding age groups. I generally start students at 6 years old and up. I had one that started at 5 and was just fine; and there…

As an adult learning how to play cello for the first time I definitely had my reservations about who I would learn from. Should I just go to a general music school for varied instruments and hope for the best? Or seek out someone who is an expert in the instrument I actually wanted to learn? And which expert to choose? There were tons of options available for private lessons but I decided to stick with someone local to SFV, who taught both children and adults and had many years of teaching experience. I figured someone who could handle both populations would be patient and accommodating enough for me. As luck would have it, Rachael was the right choice for me. I'm a high school teacher, and every time I go in for a lesson with Rachael I recognize all the elements of good teaching happening between us. She provides immediate, useful feedback, provides accountability, and challenges me with pieces just within my range of development. My goal is to be able to play at the intermediate level and to possibly play in an adult volunteer orchestra and I've been happy with the progress I've made with Rachael as my teacher. If you're on the fence about whether it's worth taking private lessons, my advice is to consider what you ultimately want out of your playing cello. If you're stuck, do you want an expert's feedback? If you're bored, do you want a challenge? If you're lazy, do you want a little pressure? If you're curious, do you want a knowledgeable guide? And what's an education worth, really? I'm proud to consider myself a lifelong learner and Rachael, as my guide, has been a critical part of my continued enjoyment of the cello. Don't wait! Schedule something with her today. You won't regret it.

I even ended up taking a break before looking for another teacher and luckily finding Rachael. My short time with her has been a completely different experience. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable and a fantastic teacher but she is also an overall warm human. Her teaching style is perfect for a nervous adult lol and she's so open to doing what works for you as an individual student and your specific goals.

For starters, the windows and posters have seen their days that one might think that it is out of business, but it is in fact not and quite the opposite - tons of space inside! They have a variety of instruments and supplies, including a cleaning swab which I was looking for. And the plus is that they also offer music lessons in private rooms - even same day! I had an initial same-day oboe lesson with Phil, and we had great conversation. However, I have to admit that I didn't learn too much, and that we spent most of the time talking. The person working at the front was pretty chill, but paying for lessons wasn't very clear from the beginning - recommend being more specific with those. Their website is via Tumblr (?) which is a surprise. Lessons were $40 / session, and they recommend one session per week (but how long is a session?). Overall, I wish that there was more clarity on this side from time to payment the moment that we signed up. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street or in the lot in the back. However, do note that parking on the street is via metered parking and not free most hours. Return? Potentially for some music books!

I have wanted to learn how to play the guitar for a very long time, but never took the time and was always too scared to start. First of all, Emma made scheduling lessons with her a breeze : she replied to my initial message very fast and our first lesson was scheduled within a week or so. Since then, she has always been very flexible to find the best time for our lessons. It's been very helpful with my busy schedule. Additionally, being a mom, I'm often tired and stressed out and Emma provides a relaxing and supportive atmosphere to learn. She always takes the time to see how I'm doing and adapts the expectations of the day in function of how I respond or feel. She is a very good people-reader and is very empathetic. As a professor, I know that it's not easy to be a good pedagogue who adapts to the learning style of his/her students. Emma figured out really fast what time of learner I was and adapted her teaching methods to my pace and the type of instruction I responded best to. She makes it easy to understand where to place your fingers, how to strum, and the best way to remember chords and transitions, etc. She is extremely patient but, at the same time, challenges you to always be better ! Overall, I've learned much much more that I could have ever expected in just one month. I missed a few lessons but I always feel like I'm progressing every time I see her. My goal is to sing and play with my dad in December and further down the road, to sing and play for my little girl - I totally believe that Emma will get me there ! If you are looking for a wonderful music instructor, look no further! You won't regret it :)
