I found her behavior a little bizarre but harmless, that was before she BOTCHED my head. I asked her for a simple high and tight with a fade. For some reason, she got defensive that I had an opinion on what kind of cut I wanted and told me 'I've been doing this for 35 years. I have a masters in this.' The haircut was the most uncomfortable experience I've had, probably ever, in a barber's chair. When she was cutting my hair, I asked her to please keep the length as it was on top. She told me she'd just 'clean it up'. Then proceeded to shave off 1/4 inch of my hair, and totally shave off a patch on the back of my head. She said 'your cowlick is just way to obvious, I had to shave it.' Another patron came in to make an appointment, she told him to schedule himself in their book, but to only use one specific pen, so she left me to get him the pen. She realized he had a cough, and proceeded to take go get cleaning product and spend 3 minutes sterilizing the pen, desk, and book. She kept referring to herself as an artist. She left me looking like a Belgian monk. Also had a lot of opinions on immigrants. Told me my wife will love the cut. I can promise you my husband would NOT love it. It was a nightmare, please save yourself. I'm sitting in a real barbershop waiting to get my hair fixed.

After trying a few of the barbers, we learned that Leopold is our favorite and does the best job for us. --Barber recommended: Leopold-- One of my kids always got a fine haircut anywhere we went, but the other has had quite a few weird cuts by professional stylists. I don't know why. Maybe his hair grows in a particularly unusual way? Try LEOPOLD if you, too, have hard-to-cut hair and have suffered elsewhere. --Location & good service-- Anyway, I can't say enough good things about this convenient location and its nice, professional employees. Prior to the pandemic, we would just walk in. After its pandemic reopening, the policy switched to appointment only to reduce crowding. I actually prefer a booked appointment since I dislike waiting, so this worked fine for my family. --COVID specific concern-- Right now, in October 2021, however, we have to find a new barbershop. Though Yelp still lists "masks required" and "staff wear masks" for Montserrat Barber Shop, this was no longer true when my husband went in for a cut last month. Some people in the shop wore masks, but it was clearly now optional as others were bare-faced. (I sincerely hope based upon vaccination status, but my husband did not ask this question.) If you are vaccinated and comfortable to be face-to-face with others indoors without masks, I still recommend this shop. If you are at very high risk for COVID-19 complications in spite of being vaccinated--like a member of our household--hold off on visiting Montserrat Barber Shop until this delta variant surge ends. Since Salem enacted a universal indoor mask mandate, we will search for a temporary hair salon option there (though I sincerely hate setting foot in Salem during the month of October.) As an aside, I wish Yelp and other review sites were more proactive about keeping these vital stats updated. These services offer far less value when facts change and listings go out-of-date.

The waiting area was comfortable with AC and tv. After waiting 5 minutes Leopold asked if I was ready. He was very professional, fast and did an excellent job. I'll be going here for a haircut from now on. Reasonable prices and excellent haircuts.

It looks like a backyard salon inside ran by ownership who doesn't know men's hair with a small hand written sign on the window that says woman's cuts welcome or whatever it said. We went a man cave not a budget co-ed bbq. All the owner did when I was there is complain about "broke f*ckers" who can't afford a haircut. The girl who cut my hair didn't know what a taper was then when she did taper she lined it.... The fade at the top of my head was super uneven and she rolled over the back corners of my head but left top-hair length worth of hair near my temple. She touched around my left ear but not my right but then touched the inside of my right ear and not my left. When I went home I spent almost an hour recutting it with hair scissors I have and shears. Just got my haircut at the groomsmith for the same price and he instantly saw the issues and got me exactly how I needed on every level. Groomsmith, Scuttlebutt, or Lucky's Barber all way better than this place and all in general downtownish area but always booked so do it right unlike me last time.
