A seven mile round trip unless you're heading to/from Pulaski via the ulta scenic route. The marker reads, "Crockett's Cove has been home to the Crockett family for two centuries. It was named for Lt. John Crockett, Sr. (1737-1799), son of Samuel and Esther Thompson Crockett, a Revolutionary War veteran buried in the family cemetery a mile east. His half-brother Lt. Col. Robert Sayers (1754-1826), buried on a hill near him, also served in the war and later became a justice of the peace and a member of the Virginia General Assembly. On 10 May 1864 during the Civil War, just east of the Allen Crockett house here, occurred a cavalry engagement between the brigades of Union Brig. Gen. William W. Averell and Confederate Brig. Gen. The marker reads, "One mile north is a plantation that was surveyed in March, 1748, and patented, in June, 1753, by Colonel John Buchanan and named by him "Anchor and Hope." There in 1792 an academy was established to teach oratory. The pioneer educator, Thomas E. Birch, was instructor and minister for the settlement." John Buchanan's Anchor and Hope Plantation was left to his sons, James and William, at the time of his death. It is marker K-36 and was erected by the Conservation & Development Commission in 1932. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Samuel H. Newberry, a captain in the Confederate army who represented Bland and Pulaski Counties in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1865 to 1867, lived here at Eagle Oak. Newberry served in the Senate of Virginia during the 1870s and 1880s and joined the Readjuster Party, a biracial coalition that sought to repudiate a portion of Virginia's antebellum debt. In 1882 he and three other senators, known as the "Big Four," broke with party leader William Mahone. The Readjusters nevertheless passed their legislative agenda, but the party dissolved in 1885. Newberry left office in 1884, published a book of poetry later in life, and died in 1916." It is marker number KC-3 and it was erected in 2016 by the Department of Historic Resources. The marker reads, "Walter Crockett was born in the 1730s. By 1760, he had joined the Augusta County militia. Rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, he subsequently served in the militias of Botentourt, Fincastle, and then Montgomery Counties, beginning in 1769. He participated in the Point Pleasant expedition of 1774 during Dunmore's War, and in Revolutionary War activities in southwestern Virginia in 1779 and 1780. He represented Montgomery County in the Virginia House of Delegates (1777-1779 and 1789) and at Virginia's convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. Crockett became the clerk of the court of Wythe County in 1790. He died in 1811." There is additional information online. Crockett was born circa 1732 and there is debate as to whether it was in Augusta County Virginia () or Lancaster County Pennsylvania. He was the son of Huguenots Joseph Crockett Jr. and Jeanne de Vigne. He was a delegate to the Virginia Ratifying Convention of 1788, where he voted against ratifying the U.S. Constitution, fearing that the new federal government would become too powerful and threaten individual and state liberties. He was not alone in this opposition - Many western Virginians and Appalachian delegates opposed ratification, reflecting a divide between agrarian frontier communities and coastal commercial centers that favored stronger federal control. This helped lead to the adoption of the Bill of Rights in 1791, a concession to Anti-Federalist concerns that ultimately shaped the Constitution's final form. It's one of those tunnels that feels way bigger and longer once you're actually driving through it…read more You enter this huge opening cut into the mountain, and then suddenly you're surrounded by concrete and darkness with the lights stretching out ahead of you. It's about a mile long, so you're in there long enough for it to feel like you're actually going through the mountain rather than just passing under it. And when you come out the other side, the daylight and mountain scenery hit you all at once. It's a pretty cool experience if you've never been through a mountain tunnel before. This trip we went through it at night time so we couldnt see any of the gorgeous scenery, this time through. But it is definitely a must see!

The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel is on Interstate 77 in Bland County, Virginia. It is a LONG tunnel…read morethrough the Appalachian Mountians. This two lane, fast moving, tunnel is 4,229 feet long or 1.289 miles long. Driving through it the length was noticeable and that is why I snapped a photo of the light at the end of the tunnel. It wasn't until I went to write this review that I thought what would happen if there was an accident inside the tunnel. I'm not claustrophobic but in reading of the number of closures because of massive pileups mid-tunnel I'm going to have to put the possibilities of accidents out of my mind before we travel through this tunnel next year. Overall for a tunnel that was built in 1972 it appears in good shape. I know we will continue to travel through this tunnel annually as the alternate route is far worse. Three stars for being a good route from North Carolina to Kentucky. I can't help but deduct a couple of stars for the tunnel being two lanes and in possible need of extended closure if an accident occurs.

A large room for children's books and activities. Computer room with several computers for patrons to use. In addition to books and video's this library is active for the community. It hosts exercise classes, knitting classes and various other classes the community can participate in with no additional cost.

It points out some history that predates the Revolutionary War and continues past the Civil War. The marker has the same text on both sides, reading "Col. John Chiswell is credited with discovering a lead deposit along the New River, about seven miles south of here, late in the 1750s. With partners he established mines and a smelting operation. Enslaved laborers were a vital part of the workforce. The mines, leased by Virginia during the Revolutionary War, supplied lead to the Continental army. Moses Austin, father of Stephen F. Austin, ran the mines during the 1790s, and the town of Austinville grew up nearby. The mines supplied the Confederacy and were destroyed by Union forces on 17 Dec. 1864. Rebuilt, they were again destroyed in April 1865. After the Civil War, zinc replaced lead as the primary resource extracted here."
