    H&R Block

For close to ten years, the Hudson, NY branch of H&R Block has prepared my taxes. This year, the…read moreIRS questioned a prior year's return. I left phone messages with Block's office in Hudson. After 3 days of leaving messages, I finally got a live person who gave minimal assistance in resolving the problem and told me to send the demand form back to the IRS with a form proving an IRS Rollover. I did, certified mail. Two months later, I received another demand (for a smaller amount) from the IRS and personally went to the Block office and left the forms with an associate. I came back 2 days later, and the associate returned my forms with some lines highlighted in yellow on the forms, and told me to send those and a copy of my 1099 back to the IRS. I did, certified mail. One month later, I received YET ANOTHER demand from the IRS (for the smaller amount, plus interest). I physically went to the Block office in Hudson and was told I would have to come back and see the tax preparer on Monday at 9 AM. So.. I Ieft and returned that Mon only to find a sign on the door indicating the office would be closed all week. I was furious since I believed I had had an appointment and called the Block office. Their answering machine stated the office would be closed for another two weeks. That was my THIRD try at getting assistance...after being a 10-year client and having paid more than $3,000 in fees! I then learned that unless you pay a $30 surcharge at the time a tax return is prepared, you will not get but minimal assistance from H&R Block if the IRS questions the return. One would expect this type of support without the $30 surcharge (which, by the way, they did not tell me about when charging me for the years of tax preparations they did for me). I finally went to another tax professional, who cleared up the matter in two weeks (and charged $150). I think it unconscionable for Block to have a surcharge for doing what any customer would expect is inherent in the service. Assistance in the event of an IRS inquiry is expected when you pay for tax preparation, but it isn't. You must pay the $30 surcharge. And it is even worse because Block does not tell you about this in advance. My advice -- pay the surcharge and hope that Block performs if needed, or even better .... use another tax preparer.

Wholly inept staff. I created an account online where I uploaded all of my information, forms, etc…read more Was prompted to make an appointment, which I did. When I arrived for that appointment, they claimed they couldn't find me (after asking for my name repeatedly - like 7 times) or the appointment in their system. I waited around their office for 20 minutes while 2 septuagenarians tried to figure out the computer. They finally found my account but told me none of the forms I had uploaded earlier were there. Wanted me to go home (20 mile round trip) and upload everything again, then come back for another appointment. Yea, not happening. You can't properly handle simple client info just to get me started, I'm certainly not entrusting you with my business taxes. Avoid!

I sat through an introductory consultation where every account and asset I own was provided. I asked the associate upfront what the fee(s) would be to establish a trust. Her response was that Mr. Pierro would be in to provide that. It was pretty stunning to hear $6k and I am sure if I presented with fewer assets the fee would be different, otherwise there would be transparency. I've since established the trust, and that plus a will, power of attorney, and health care proxy were all executed with a different law office, specializing in estate planning for $3k.

He literally abandoned me 2 weeks before we were due to settle because i didnt feel comfortable with what he negotiated. The negotiations took place off the record without my knowledge and nobody present. He tried bullying me and my younger brother into consenting to the agreement. When i asked for information and documents i was ignored. He was extremely immature, lazy and temperamental. If i was skeptical of anything he would get mad asking me if i was a lawyer. He would attempt to belittle me and lie so blatantly without even attempting to cover the lie up. there was no conversation he would just talk over you. He wants to tell you what hes going to do and what your going to do. He has no sentiment towards anyone at all. Jacob V. who is/was an associate there was assigned to my case originally. No complaints with him. He immediately went to work. Answered our questions. Communicated effectively. He was unwavering the minute we hired him for representation. According to Aaron he is no longer with the firm and thats how i ended up with Aaron. There may be other lawyers in the firm that are competent and wont treat you like a peasant. I dont know. This was my experience and it was nothing but anxiety the moment Aaron took our case. When we went our separate ways there were not any notes, documents, records of anything. He just pretty much winged it i guess who knows.
