Dr. Afkham is a hidden gem of a dentist! I've been going to the Davis Smile Center since 2019, and Dr. Afkham is the best dentist I've ever had. The front desk staff and dental hygienists are all incredibly friendly and professional, and I've especially appreciated how easy it is to keep my insurance updated with them and the clear communication they've had about billing. Dr. Afkham does the work himself! He does the cleanings and pays close attention to what he finds. A couple of appointments ago, he found a cavity (my first ever--I was really nervous about it!) and explained the cost of treating it right there and had me treated and out in half an hour. Doctor Jafar Afham grabbed my arm and pushed me out of his office very rudely on March 27th because He disagreed that I think they sent me a misleading message.  He then cheated on the police that he merely "opened the door for me". So, HE ASSAULTED ME AND THEN CHEATED TO THE POLICE. I visited the clinic for an exam regarding wisdom tooth extraction March 27th. Based on prior communication, I was under the impression that the visit was a preparatory step for the extraction. However, I was informed during the visit that the extraction could not be performed there and was referred elsewhere. A misunderstanding arose from the clinic's initial communication, which I believed to be misleading. Upon addressing this with the front desk, a disagreement ensued. Dr. Afham intervened, and the situation escalated. Dr. Afham forcefully instructed me to leave, resulting in him physically grabbing my arm and pushing me all the way out of the office, causing my phone to fall and further adding to my distress. I immediately contacted the police to report the incident. However, Dr. Afham provided a conflicting account, stating he merely "opened the door" for me, which led to the police being unable to take further action. This experience was not only humiliating but raised serious concerns about the professional conduct at Davis Smile Center. It is particularly disheartening given my history as a loyal patient over the past three years. I am considering filing grievances with relevant professional and regulatory bodies, including the Delta Dental Program, the Dental Board of California, and the Better Business Bureau, to seek redress and ensure such conduct is appropriately addressed. Dr. Afkham was polite and the front desk assistant was personable and talkative. The thing is, I came in because one of my teeth was super sensitive to cold, and he suggested it could be due to stress to my tooth which seems reasonable. Then I mentioned a line I noticed on my tooth and asked if it was a crack, he said he saw the small "crack" and warned me that if it ran vertically into the root of my tooth I would need a root canal. He instructed me to call in 3 days if sensitivity persisted to schedule a root canal. I though it was strange he only mentioned the crack after I did, so I got a second opinion. The 2nd dentist said the line was a normal part of the tooth and could be found on all my teeth (which I discovered was true after another close look). They instructed me to wait 2 weeks until further action. The fact that Dr. Afkham didn't tell me this and the difference between the recommended waiting periods leads me to believe Dr. Afkham wasn't paying attention to details and was quick to recommend a costly (and in my case unnecessary) procedure, which I don't appreciate. read more

I have been going to Dr. Afkham's office in the past two years since I was unhappy with my previous dentist, and Dr. Afkham's office was recommended by my physician. I have done preventative care and a cavity filling during my visits. I have been very happy with the service. I have a high gag reflex, and their office have been accommodating and patient, giving me numbing liquid to swish and trying x-rays multiple times until the pictures come fine. The doctor and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. After doing a filling, I never thought about that tooth any more, which means a good treatment! I really like their spacious and quiet office too. The previous office I used to go was crowded with patients and it was so hard to reschedule an appointment. PLEASE AVOID! They surcharge patients for gingival irrigation in deep cleaning treatment, which is not allowed by the insurance and not covered by insurance. If you have to visit, check your bill multiple times before you sign your name. Because when you are trying to communicate about the bill, they will tell you they got your signature. read more

Update: they threatened me to remove the review on google and said they were going to sue me! So scary! Avoid the dentist if you are not able to manage your insurance by yourself! They handle insurance calculations, and I used to have faith in their expertise. I appreciated having someone on their team who could navigate my insurance and determine the correct amount for me to pay. I've been a loyal patient for a considerable time, and honestly, I'm not well-versed in understanding insurance details or how much coverage I have remaining. This recent experience left me deeply disappointed. They mentioned having me sign a document stating that I'd be responsible for any costs not covered by insurance. I trusted their calculations, believing that if they said I'd only owe $100, that's what it would be. However, they let me down. They initially assured me $100 was sufficient, but in the end, I was billed $350. While I acknowledge that I signed the document, I'm genuinely saddened that they didn't uphold their word, leaving me to pay an extra $350. I've already paid them $350, as they asked me to, because of the insurance's refusal to provide an advance on the next billing cycle. They also let me remove the review because they have a lawyer going to contact me, so I modified my review. I'd like to clarify that I'm not questioning the dentist's competence, but I strongly advise prospective patients to have a thorough understanding of their insurance coverage before choosing to seek treatment here. read more

I've been going to Dr. Afkham since 2011 when I started college at Davis. After I graduated and moved back to Bay Area I kept going back to him since I loved his work ethic, his honesty, his great work and the way he treats his patients. Driving 2:30 hours to see my dentist seemed a little too much for me so I started looking for a new dentist in my area. I've tried 3 different dentists and each person ruined a tooth of mine just to make more money. That was the time I realized I prefer to drive 2:30 hours each time to see my amazing dentist in Davis so I started going back to him again to fix what other dentists ruined for me. With no question he is the best dentist I've had. He is so honest, so patient, cares for his patients and his prices are very reasonable. read more

Be careful to accept treatment here. They may promise your insurance will cover the cost. After couple of months, they will send you bill and charge you. They looked very nice however they will change their face after you finish treatment and ask you to pay the bill instead of asking insurance to pay. You will be in trouble for sure. It is very sad to talk with them. They do not listen to the patient. read more

I randomly selected Dr. Afkham as my dentist in 2016 because he was in-network and had good reviews on Google/Yelp, and am so glad this was the office I went with. It always feels like the staff is looking out for your best interests -- both in terms of health and finances. Dr. Afkham is very nice and thoroughly explains all procedures. It never feels like he's talking down to you, which in my experience is a rare trait. The office works with your insurance and are clear about procedure costs, and it never feels like they're trying to up-sell you. My one complaint is that there is sometimes a wait, but that seems to be standard at a dentist office. I needed a root canal recently and my experience was excellent. Christina was so patient and helpful as I called a million times to ask questions, and they were able to get me in the day after the endodontist's office sent over my treatment summary. As a grad student on a grad-student salary, I appreciated that they did their best to minimize the overall cost of the root canal + restoration. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Afkham and Davis Smile Center if you're in the market for a new dentist. read more

I started coming to Dr. Afkham about 10 years ago and today I got a new crown. He was very careful and patient with cleaning the prepared exposed tooth (no numbing) for the beautiful new crown!! I was impressed!! The crown fit like a glove! Wish he didn't move away from the Anderson plaza area because by bike it can sometimes be difficult to get there when the City of Davis wants to prolong construction work on the roads and bike lanes. With that said the new office is beautiful and clean! Lastly no long waits, someone mentioned having to wait 45 mins. In 10 years the longest I've waited was about 10 mins. but that's rare. As for the Doctor, his employees and assistants, they're all pretty nice!! I feel like I can talk to them all with ease. read more

This is the most dishonest dentist I've ever seen. My daughter went in to a filling, she didn't need any other services because oral evaluation and cleaning have all been done a couple weeks ago by another dentist closer to home. However, Dr. AFKHAM refused to do filling only, he insisted on doing everything that's already been done just a couple weeks ago including cleaning. When they were told not to do the cleaning because it's just been done, they said it's "complimentary" but they turned around and charged insurance company. When I called them to tell them I found out they did charge insurance for all these unauthorized services, the receptionist hung up on me. My daughter had to wait for 2 hours after taking x rays, only then been told to come back another day for the filling with another appointment because the dentist "had to go to lunch". I have been going to this dentist for the last there years. + Fillings: I have had several fillings done and some old ones redone. Today, I was in and out in less than one hour. + Wisdom Teeth: I had my wisdom teeth removed here. First, he did the two on the right and then the two on the left. It was as painless as it could be. + Office: The office is brand new. Sherry is super nice. They call to confirm a day before your appointment. + Equipment: All of the equipment is new. Getting x-rays done is super easy and comfortable. At other places, I always left with a sore jaw. + Cost: I was afraid it would be expensive but they really try to keep out-of-pocket costs low. Over the last three years, I have relied mostly on SHIP insurance. I recommend this dentist to everyone. read more

I went to Dr. Afkham for a nightguard after discovering I was grinding my teeth while sleeping. He did the impression and I came back a couple weeks later to pick up my "nightguard." He dishonestly handed me a flimsy bleaching tray for teeth whitening. I didn't know at the time so I just accepted it, but after visiting another dentist, they chuckled when I showed them my "nightguard." I was informed that Dr. Afkham's decision to try and have me use a bleaching tray as a nightguard would have actually damaged my teeth. I would not come here again because I'm not sure what other tricks Dr. Afkham would try. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Afkham for over 5 years now and I have never had any complaints regarding my dental care. His new office is very modern and clean. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes to be seen for my appointment and am always in and out in an hour (for teeth cleanings). My teeth cleanings are always done very thoroughly by the dental hygienists. Dr. Afkham himself is very friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer/explain anything. Both my husband and I have been visiting Dr Afkham for over 3 years now. We've both been getting regular dental visits and cleanings most of our lives and can say he is the best dentist we have had. The office and rooms are very clean, the appointments are quick (I have never had to wait past my scheduled appointment time) and the dental hygienists and front office staff are very friendly to both of us. Dr Afkham takes his time with each patient to make sure they can ask all their questions after each visit, he is very patient and I have enjoyed every visit. UC Davis Student, with SHIP insurance that covers Dental exam, diagnostic and cleaning. Just beware of PPO dentist who recommend you to do so many things. Just say no, and get whatever you want. If they say No, just go to another one. There are million dentists in town. I think Dentist need to start thinking by putting themselves in our shoes. I know treatment plans they give us are all necessary in a bookish way, but there are practical ways of doing them. We don't have $1000 to pay out of our pocket, on the top of what insurance covers. They must come up with a nice, comprehensive and affordable plans. I am giving three stars cause of their unnecessary recommendations, however, Dr. did a good job on my teeth. My child had a consultation for Invisalign. We arrived 10 minutes early to fill out paperwork prior to the 1pm appointment. Lights were turned off and it was 5 minutes before we saw the receptionist. She turned the lights on and was super friendly. After we filled out the paperwork, she took us to the exam room. She got out the sample Invisalign and showed us the sample trays and then left it on the counter. I sat in a chair and my son sat in the exam chair. 50 minutes went by before we decided to reschedule. Upon hearing that, the dentist suddenly became available to us. He came into the exam room and asked who the appointment was for. Me in a chair or my son who was sitting in the exam chair! We clarified that it was for my son (sitting in the exam chair!), then he asked why we were there. He was totally clueless. There was even the sample Invisalign sitting right next to him. At this point, we got up and walked out. Avoid this ridiculous dentist if at all possible. read more
