Jailhouse Provisions was a decent stop during our time on Bald Head Island, but it didn't quite stand out enough for me to rate it higher. Our group ordered the fried shrimp, and that was definitely the highlight of the meal. The shrimp were crispy, well-cooked, and flavorful, making for a satisfying coastal lunch. The food overall was solid, with no major issues from a quality standpoint. That said, like many places on the island, the prices felt inflated compared to what you receive (I understand some of that comes with the location). Service was another area that fell a bit short. We were dining with a group of nine, and while managing larger parties can be challenging, attentiveness was lacking throughout the meal. Great stop for lunch on bald head island. They have a good selection of draft beer and some bottled. Nice, clean atmosphere. They also offer outdoor seating with shade. The menu had a good selection of fried seafood. We enjoyed the shrimp basket and the scallops. Our favorite part was the lemon aioli! We even dipped our fries in it. This is a really cute island restaurant in the middle of BHI. They have inside and outside seating, and a bar area. It feels relaxed and has a chill vibe. We had a party of 10 and got seated immediately . However, it took us over 20 minutes to get our drinks and 35 minutes to get our food. Our server was nice and you can tell she had been waiting tables for awhile. But...it took forever to get what we needed. I will say that was one of the best crab cakes that I have ever had. It was full of meat and barely any filler. I subbed out fries for a small salad for $4.00. They charge $.50 for every small ramekin of ranch so beware if you are ranch people. Pricing is kinda high for a salad. For instance, a fran cake or fresh catch salad was $36.00. read more

As a resident of Bald Head Island I feel I can speak to the uniqueness of the restaurant and the food that you will find at the restaurant and around the island. Bald Head Island is a beautiful island located off the shores of North Carolina only accessible by ferry or private boat. There are no vehicles on the island the only transportation for visitors/residents is by golf cart, bike, or foot. This not only makes the island a haven, but its remoteness can be challenging for restauranteurs navigating employees and delivery logistics. Jailhouse Provisions has been a wonderful and welcome change to the island. The restaurant is located in the middle of the island about two miles from the ferry landing. Jailhouse offers many options that you do not find on the island including seafood, lobster roll, fresh salads and small plates. The restaurant also features a full bar and has a beautiful outdoor patio which sometimes hosts live music in the summer and fall. The owner has several food venues on the island and is very good about following Covid guidelines as well as having a well trained staff. Always make sure you call ahead or check the website to see if they are open because the hours are dependent upon the season until the summer season and then they are usually open daily. read more

After surviving tropical storm Colin on the island for our day visit, we were wet and hungry. We had visited Jules first, only to be rudely welcomed.... So this was next on the list. I'm glad we are here instead. Our party of five ordered the fish sandwich, the lobster roll, the Buffalo shrimp, the scallops, and one more I can't remember. All were tasty! Went to Jailhouse last night and the place is terrible. We ordered hush puppies, and the butter that came with the hush puppies was frozen solid (we couldn't use it). When we pointed this out to the waitress her response was "all our butter is like that." We ordered a burger cooked medium well, the middle of the burger was raw. We ordered Tito's on the rocks, and had to send it back because it was gin. I watched the bartender pour the second drink out of the Tito's bottle but it was still gin. I then said that it is still gin, so I asked to return the drink and get a shot of Tito's. This time it was from a new bottle and was actually Tito's. I was concerned that gin was in the Tito's bottle, but I guess I will never know. I would not bother going to Jailhouse. read more

Not a very coastal menu. Lots of fried food, no fresh seafood for the most part. The flies were horrible... landing in everything form the ketchup to the beverages. Racist place. They wait until we have the whole meal and then asked us to leave because I was in a bikinis they waited until my husband was in the bathroom and the two waitresses harassed me about my top and told me not to make a scene because people were eating. As my husband returned they left. We asked the bartender if this was an issue if we finished our meals and he said no and we could finish our meal. The server then came over again to harass us more and ultimately hand us out bill and tell us to leave just because I was in a bikini top. The bartenders and service staff up until today were great. I don't know what this ladies problem was. I feel like it was because of my race. If the bikini was an issue they should have told us to begin with. Not after we were done with the meal. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. It came out so quickly I assumed it was just great service. Nope, it was raw completely inside. Only part cooked was the exterior. I've worked in a restaurant and bar so I didn't want to complain but ultimately sent it back since that's obviously not heathy to eat. I also ordered a blueberry margarita which was very small and was $16! It tasted good but was 1/3 of an actual margarita size. The staff was extremely friendly and I have no complaints about them whatsoever. But as someone traveling for work, $50 for a chicken sandwich (not even cooked, should of received a discount) fries, Tiny margarita and a beer was rediculous. read more
