Fabulous service. Super friendly staff. Totally covid safe. Can't wait to come back. Bloody Mary was lush.

Fat Hippo Newcastle - GF American Burger with Fries

Fat Hippo Newcastle seems to be one of the few restaurants in the city actually open past 9 pm,…read moreafter being turned away from half a dozen restaurants nearby that either had closed early or closed due to their timetabled opening hours, I decided to visit Fat Hippo. It is located just off Grey Street, head down the steps into the main restaurant area. I was looking for this place on my Apple Maps and did have some difficulty as the sign from outside isn't too noticeable. The staff seemed friendly and explained how most of the menu could be adapted to be gluten-free - I ended up going for the American Burger, on the menu this was described as "Double patty, American cheese, pickles, ketchup + American mustard. Includes a FREE SIDE of your choice!" I would have liked to see a wider variety of burgers on the menu, perhaps with some different and more exciting sauces - only the more premium burgers seemed to come with the Fat Hippo sauce or truffle mayo. With smashed burgers being in right now, I was surprised they didn't offer them on the menu here. My food was just OK, the fries were really skinny and a little too thin for my liking, but they were still seasoned well. My burger again was average, the meat was reasonably juicy for the type of patty used, the cheese was fine, the sauces were slightly cheap and it felt like it was overloaded around the edges, and not enough in the middle. The gluten-free bun wasn't too bad - certainly not the worst I've had but also not the best either. 3* - The food was average, if you're looking for a bite later into the evening in Newcastle, this is one of the few options, so for that it's good, I would be unlikely to return if other places were open nearby though but it's nice to have a reliable choice in the city if all else fails.

Best and most likely the most healthy pizza (or 'pie') you can get in Newcastle…read more Cal clearly knows his stuff as this pizza left a delicious after taste in my mouth, unlike dominoes/pizza hut which just leave me feeling sick. This thin pizza was the bees knees!

Cal's Own has completely changed, so any review prior to April 2016 will be for their old location…read moreand old menu. Now they are in Jesmond, with a bigger restaurant and a huge, awesome pizza oven from Italy. Their soft launch menu features only Neopolitan-style pizzas - you know the ones that are only baked for a minute or two in a super-hot oven, you eat with a knife and fork, simple fresh tomatoes and the finest mozzarella, not heavy with toppings? They're very busy, as everyone is excited about the relaunch, but we came on the second night they were open and got a table after waiting only 10-15 minutes at around 630 pm, but if we went any later we would've been waiting longer. Staff are still figuring out the kinks of having a new restaurant, but you can't hold that against them at all! They'll have it down to a science within a few weeks, no doubt. Just be prepared to forgive a few occasional serving missteps. The new building is casual but sleek and shiny, with a huge open kitchen where you can watch the master work! We enjoyed some huge plump green olives and drinks while we waited for our pizzas. And what can I say, for what they are, they are the best we've had outside Italy (and probably tied with those). Perfect crust. Light, fresh ingredients. Good size for one person (a rocket salad split between two is the perfect accompaniment and will help you fill up). The spicy sausage on top was great, but you can't beat the pizza margherita for sheer simplicity. However, my husband and I both agreed that though these pizzas were great, we terribly miss the old Cal's Own. His Brooklyn-style pies were absolutely second to none, and that's what we crave when we want pizza. Neopolitan style is elegant and wonderful, knife-and-fork pizza. But Cal did huge pizzas that were sliced, and topped with all sorts of wonderful things, and we miss those every day! We hope that after a successful start, that Cal will expand his menu to include those beloved Brooklyn pies, but we'll definitely be back to try these again too!
