I'm not arguing that violent assaults should go unpunished, but statistically it is just as (if not more) likely for women-on-women DV to happen in AK as it is man-on-women. But due to the experiences of many of the young AK criminal (and civil) attorneys, troopers, DA's, and judges with men who actually commit heinous and cowardly violent acts, the system is severely biased. They don't even recognize how biased they are. All it takes is a single allegation from a scorned woman (with significant motivation to get as much $ possible out of a divorce) to get these attorneys to cower down and advise their clients to accept any plea deal or settlement no matter how poor a deal. Katharine Penrod and most other attorneys will cave to the system without even discussing the merits of the case or the facts involved with their client. She told me 100% I would be convicted if we went to trial (not what happened:). Never mind you will not be provided your constitutionally "guaranteed" due diligence or equal protections in the process. Katharine was particularly quick to judge, had poor communications with me, and I could tell was biased from the start (I respect she advocates for abused child and women but her objectivity has been compromised in the process). While I will say Chris Cromer made some half ass attempts at remedying some of the problems with my representation, I paid a lot of money essentially for his clerk to fill out forms, draft petitions, and put together exhibits that were never needed (and Chris knew that all along). I ended up having to pay AOW for Ms. Penrod's poor legal advice and then had to hire an entirely different criminal attorney who I had to coach into (essentially advocated for myself) requesting my charges get set aside. In the end it took the judge less than 3 mins to set aside my charges because he could see right through the vindictiveness of the whole allegation. Katharine (Ms. Penrod) was 100% sure I would have the DV charges stick and stay on my record and she was 100% wrong. And worse yet she never attempted to describe what evidence would be used against me, listen to my concerns, or to explain if I had any other legal options.

I am in Illinois. My originally custody agreement was created in Alaska, albeit my child had never been in Alaska. Her father filed there for dissolution and was willing to give me full custody so the divorce was uncontested and child custody was wrongfully established in the wrong state. Evan responded to the motion to modify with a request to vacate the original custody order entirely- as it was wrongfully established. The judge denied our motion, but Evan was very confident that his ruling was wrong and offered the option of taking my case to the Supreme Court with a Petition for Review (similar to an appeal). After 10 months of fighting endless motions from the other side (all of which were filled with hurtful lies and damaging accusations), and having a hearing at the Supreme Court, my Petition for Review was granted and my original custody order in Alaska was vacated. My custody case is now in Illinois, the rightful jurisdiction. Throughout this entire time, Evan recieved almost weekly emails from me. Wanted another 5k before helping any further with my case. So he fired me as a client, never returned my funds. I was able to solve the case myself, got a court appointed public defender, showed her the legality issues with the case and she got the case dropped basically immediately.
