With most bakers now taking on the Greggs look, its refreshing to find one that ain't. Add to this the great pie's, prepubescent G is right here too, they are pretty damn fine and you have yourself a mighty fine wee find out here in the sticks on Partick. So yeah, if your out this way and fancy some stodge followed by some sugary fat with cream then why not follow young child and my advice...come here....sorry Gordon...it's your own fault for being born after me.

The prices are very cheap in the Wee Bakers - for example, it is only £1.55 for a can of Irn Bru, a hot scotch pie and a chocolate chip cookie. There is also a great choice of not only various cakes and pastry food such as sausage rolls and bridies, but also hot soup, filled rolls, tea and coffee. Service is very quick - there is obviously stuff that has already been heated in advance so you don't have to sit and wait for long, though the food is always heated through properly; it's not like in Greggs where they give you a pie that has been sitting out all afternoon and has gone cold. The ladies who work here are also very pleasant and friendly. My only real complaint about this place is that it looks a bit too old and traditional - it would be nice to see the cakes sitting out in more pristine and modern storage trays etc. However, all of the food I have tasted is excellent - the scotch pies in particular taste unique and are possibly the best I've ever eaten (trust me, I've tried them at just about every football ground in Scotland!), while the donuts and cookies are gorgeous, even though I feel terribly guilty every time I indulge in one. T This place absolutely wipes the floor with the two Greggs nearby, not just in terms of the food, but the service too.

This one is set in Milngavie town centre, a charming little pedestrianised zone at the start of the West Highland Way (a walk going way up North). As always, the highlights of a trip to Greggs include the fudge donut with yummy icing and gooey delicious innards, and I think a little steak bake is taking my fancy today. Overall I can't fault this place, except possibly for the queue of old ladies who could potentially get in the way of a buggy.

I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.

This branch has lovely staff who know all the regulars, and this includes all the lovely old ladies who use it as a real bakers rather than only the local workies who use it for a quick lunch (though there is nothing wrong with that either!) I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area, but to be honest there are so many lovely Greggs around now, that I wouldn't say it's worth going out your way.

Though, if you are happy to eat only cakes for lunch, maybe this is not such a bad thing. As the cake selection is definitely the best thing this bakery has going for it. Therefore, I'd recommend this for a quick in and out job in order to pick up cakes for a leaving do or something along those lines. It's always choc-a-block and you are always behind dithery old dears who can never find their purse in their Mary Poppins style bags. Pies, rolls, cakes, scones, etc and they make birthday and wedding cakes to order. The same ladies have worked there since I was little and they are all very helpful. The shop is spotless. I think anyone who uses this shop has their favourite things. Mine are onion pies and the samll apple pies that they sell. I am also partial to a bit of domino cake. I could talk about this place all day. Highly recommended!!!

In fact, not only was there no immediately apparent coffeeshop right outside the tube, there wasn't one on the next street, or even around the corner! Once my mild anxiety attack passed... I decided to do some more scouting, which led me to the indoor shopping mecca* known as Govan Cross. Inside... I found none other than The Wee Scone Shop. I mean... how could I possibly have passed up a place with "wee" in the name? Really... I can't say I was tempted by the heat lamp-warmed grub, but I did escape with a frothy latte that satisfied my caffeine cravings. For that, I'm grateful. -- * This is a patent lie. By "shopping mecca" I mean "tragic retail food outlet that I would never consider spending any money at."

I've fortunately never been when it's busy but I've never been sure where you're supposed to queue. They recently had the counter done up and they have a counter for the cakes/cold rolls and a seperate counter for hot foods i.e. pasties/hot roll choices. I just go to the hot counter, they have a minimum selection of toasties, soup but normally have an ok variety of hot rolls and pasties. The cakes always look so delicious, the strawberry tarts are huge, to be honest most of the cake are massive. Me thinks they've been putting something in them to grow, just like when you get bizarre and ginormous cucumbers. When you go to Greggs it is your standard production line size but these come with the bumps, lumps and well out of shape. Just the way I like a cake. The clientele is normally old ladies have their afternoon tea but if you fancy a wee coffee break and cake pop in for a giant squiffy cake.
