This state park is well staffed and maintained. Many free activities are offered and cover lots of topics, including age-appropriate, environmental programs for kids -- that's nice. Jane's Island seems to be known primarily for the camping possibilities. The camping sites, both for tents and cabins, are pretty full during the season. Has a loyal following. Reserve early. Also, fishing is all the rage here. I saw many people fishing from the banks of the water and from kayaks, etc. However, biking possibilities are only average. Hiking is about the same. Crisfield gets a fair number of storms, had a bunch during our visit, and it can affect the grounds, but the area dries out pretty quickly. read more

I was last here back when I was a camper, but now we are old and prefer "glamping". We booked way ahead for a full-service cabin for 4 people and it was exactly what the doctor ordered. Cabin #1 had a full kitchen, dining room and bathroom. Upstairs was a small loft with a room with 2 twin beds, reachable by stairs (note other full service cabins have ladders, not stairs to the upstairs area). Downstairs had a bedroom with a full bed, and another bedroom with 2 twin beds. It came with a screened in porch that was wheelchair accessible. The kitchen came stocked with everything you needed, pots and pans, a microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There was a gas fireplace, but they had turned off the heat for the season. We shared a little dock overlooking the water with the cabin next door, but we had our own charcoal grill and a fire pit. We were so happy with the cabin - nothing fancy, but since two of the days we were there had torrential rain and tornado like winds, we were happy to be safe and sound and dry with electricity to boot! I tent camped here this past weekend with my husband and our two young adult children and left feeling disappointed. I feel we were mislead. Yes the park is like 30 miles but you can only really access a few of those miles at best unless you're on a boat. Yes they have a beach but when we went to rent the kayaks to go there we were informed it was half a day one way and you are dealing with big boats and paddling against the current. We spoke to someone who stays there on the regular, an avid kayaker, and she said she's never been able to do it and just gave up because it was too complicated. Also if you rent the kayaks the employees told us it takes a whole day to paddle there and back. So if it's a day just to paddle it, when do you get to enjoy the beach because the kayak must go back by sunset?! Why advertise it as something you can do easily if it actually isn't? So since we were ready for a swim and the camp store informed us it was basically impossible to do, we left to explore the town and not five minutes into the drive I saw a sign for a beach which is free to the public and this is where we spent our day instead. Why didnt they mention this to us in the store?? Because they wanted us to rent kayaks to go on mission impossible. Glad we left because that little fishing town was the highlight of our trip. We also got good ice cream from a food truck and watched the sunset from the pier. Not much else to do there either though. We wanted to buy crabs since we couldn't catch any but strangely the places to buy crabs were few and far between and all closed by 5. Back at camp yes there is fishing but only from the canal which is where everyone in the park is since there is nothing else to do! And that means it's too crowded to catch anything worth keeping. The park is large but all tents are shoved in three tiny loops which some connect to the bathrooms and some don't. We stayed in loop c and had to cut through peoples campsites to get to the bathrooms which by the way are pretty nice and private too. Lots of bugs everywhere!! Not bees, butterflies and fireflies but only the bad ones like deer flies, mosquitos and so many ticks!!! Pulled about 30 off of us in two days and got bit twice despite us using all the deet there is, staying in our screen tent and taking multiple showers. Strangely at night the camp is eerily silent. Not joking that I did not hear a single bit of wildlife, no crickets, no frogs, nothing. Campers go to bed early and it's so silent I could hear people's quiet conversations. It feels desolate and devoid of all life at the campsites. The hiking trails they highlight having, I only found two and one of which is a straight path with a swampy ditch to the right of it so basically you'll hike your way to malaria. So we skipped that of course. It seemed to me the only way you'd enjoy this place is if you have your own motorized boat. Otherwise you're basically just watching everyone else have fun on the water while being tormented by deer flies, mosquitoes and ticks. read more

Decent camping. Stayed here over labor day weekend and thankfully the mosquitoes and flies weren't as abundant as the reviews mention. Reservations were easy and COVID check in process was clear- we just called at the gate (night arrival) and someone checked us in over the phone and brought our vehicle tags. A bit difficult to navigate in the dark, be especially careful as there are ditches along the route to loop C filled with water. Clean bathroom facilities, decent sized camp areas on a gravel/sand pavement with a fire ring and lamp hook. Plenty of trees, so bring your hammock! Most sites are a short walk to the water, but no beach is accessible without kayaking there. Fish and crabs in abundance. Caught my first crabs ever with a string, chicken neck, and net! Kayaks available for rent at the marina but also Crisfield kayaks outside of the park delivers. There's alot of water to explore and many bring their fishing gear on the trips. You can kayak to the beach but I've heard there are a lot of horse flies there. Due to COVID the camp store was closed and we bought ice, firewood, and fishing supplies outside of the park. There's a super Walmart in Pocomoke City about 20 minutes away. In loop C at least, the sites are pretty close to each other- we could hear the people in the next site snore at night. My biggest complaint though is--while it's nice that it's dog friendly, there were a lot of early, incessant dog barkers in the morning that made for an early wake up time. Would come back to do more kayaking and fishing/crabbing! read more

We camped there in our RV on New Year's Eve 2020 and New Year's Day 2021. We had an excellent stay. There were only a few camp sites open - 4 RV's total. The Ranger on duty was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable. We stayed at site 51 for this trip - will aim for site 19 or site 73 when we return. And we will go back! I am impressed by what a great job the state of Maryland does running these camps. We also stopped by the Pocomoke River camp site which is worth a trip. Not sure if the Assateague State park fits our needs - prefer camping amongst the trees and not the sand dunes. read more

Our favorite place to camp! Great, waterfront sights, great sunsets, clean bath houses.

An unbelievably well maintained camping area! The bathroom is the NICEST I have ever seen in a park... nicer than most of the Marriotts I've stayed in! The landscaping was perfectly maintained. Camp store was nice when it was open. We went for spring break, but it wasn't the local spring break, so there was an "out of season" atmosphere. There were some negatives, but they didn't outweigh the positives of the campgrounds... -No garbage cans, or garbage service. The dumpster you are suppose to use was closed. -Pad sites were kind of small. We were squeezing between tents and had to have a fire so close that our tents were overly smoky. -If you don't have a boat, there's not much to do. There are 4 basic swings in the "playground," nothing else. We did some hiking and then got pretty bored - temps on the 70s but they weren't allowed to rent canoes yet because of the cold water. read more

Staff here were so friendly and helpful. We just stopped by one day to check out the park since we were not staying on the camp grounds. We went into the rental/ visitor center. My husband asked about the rental equipments and My 2 boys were encouraged to check out the room in the back with 2 small touch tanks. They were allowed to pick up the crabs and fishes in the tanks. The staff were providing facts about the crabs and just so great with my boys. There were binoculars and a telescope they were allowed to use. There is a "3 story" look out area right outside the center. We were probably at the center for 45 minutes just learning and looking around. We went back today to rent a canoe. We were only in the water for less than an hour, since I am terrified of the open water. We took the easiest route, we saw a bald eagle on our trail. It was very nice and peaceful. We were then able to get loaner crabbing equipments (they also have loaner fishing equipments) for free we brought a pack of chicken neck for bait or you can bring your own. We had so much fun crabbing, but the crabs were small and we had to release them back into the water. But it was a very fun experience if you haven't done it before! Great for kids, my kids didn't want to leave after an hour of crabby. read more

This review is mostly for tent campers - not so much for short-term visitors. Pros: 1. The most amazing empty beach - if you are strong enough to paddle for an hour each way. Cons: 1. Ectoparasites - don't camp in the summer! The place is swarmed by mosquitoes. There is still water all around the campground in what looks like drainage ditches, and that is a perfect environment for mosquito breeding. I haven't seen so many mosquitoes in years. They were biting through clothes where repellent didn't reach and getting into tents. There are also horse fly types in July, but their blood sucking cycle is much shorter - just around the time of this review. Collected about 10 ticks from two children after a 3 night-stay. 2. No electricity at sites. I ended up spending time in the nearby McDonalds to keep devices charged and catch up on email. 3. No functional wifi. What they advertise for a wifi is some sort of wireless dish service (satellite?) with 1000ms ping delay, 80mpps down /16mbps up speed. Located in the store area and COMPLETELY UNUSABLE. Conclusions: Taking a mental note to never camp in swampy areas in the summer. This may be a good place to come back in the spring or mid/late fall. read more

Chesapeake Living.. Rented a full service cabin right on the canal. Quite pleased with the set up... the cabin was no frills but it does sleep up to 6 and has a back deck, a separate screened-side deck (HUGE considering the bug factor around a salt marsh) and a nice little dock overlooking the canal and the park. *You also can have alcohol in the full service cabins but it's not allowed in other areas of the park. This place is a great place to go sea kayaking... several water trails with varying levels of length and difficulty... and you can enjoy watching a variety of birds within the park. Be sure to paddle out to the isolated beach on Tangier Sound... so nice you might just pop the question to your best gal... I did! There is a marina in the park, smaller cabins and campsite are available as well. I really enjoyed my time at this park! read more

First things first. Like your body, the park is - No wait, that isn't the first thing. First, first thing first and this only applies if you plan to head down there to tent/tear camp THIS SEASON (2013) - Renovations are afoot. The nature center is closed and the store/registration are in the ranger center. They're also about to shut down on of the bathrooms (but not the one with the washer dryer). But if you're reading this in 2014, who cares? So, second first thing first - Like your body, most of the park is water and that's great for people who like doing things in the water. (Also, bird nerding is a common activity, there's even a little observation tower) If you don't like those things and you aren't content to just sit and watch other people on the water ... This park and this review are not for you. Honest, you'll whine and ruin it for the rest of us. After two really short visits in September this park is a very close second as our favorite park. (New Germany is first.) 1. The staff was really knowledgeable and so friendly. You could not tell they had been answering the same bloody questions all summer. 2. The sites were really nice, FLAT and with plenty of room on the pad and between sites. 3. The bathrooms were in good shape for a state park. And they stayed clean even though the park was pretty full. 4. They rent kayaks and canoes! 5. Fishing! 6. Crabbing! (No license needed.) 7. Birding! A word about the boat rental. They have a nice selections of kayaks; various sizes and styles. ( I assume the same goes for canoes.) If you're going to rent one, assume you'll pay the full day rate ($50) right now. It is $10 an hour so it is really easy to hit the full day mark. I was out from 9 until 6 and that may have been my 5th time in a kayak, ever. Plus, you pay when you bring it back, so if you do wind up doing less than 5 hours, no harm done. One tip - Locate the nearest water pump before it gets dark. A lot of them are set back off the road, which made for some lugging and swearing when I went to do the dishes that first evening. read more

So I haven't done much outdoor camping in my lifetime.. but I can say that I'm so glad to have experienced my first at Janes Island. My boyfriend, born a country boy - has camped his entire life, so imagine my worry when I let him plan this vacation. Luckily, he picked a great campsite... with clean bathrooms and even better, it was right on the water! I got to bring my pitbull pup who absolutely adored the outdoors. Who knew pitbulls were so outdoorsy? ha. We enjoyed the water trails and rented out a canoe for us and the pup. We paddled out to the private island, about 45 minutes and had the entire beach to ourselves to run around and play. Let's just say we got a lot of really great photos. I wouldn't suggest Janes in the summertime, because of the surrounding marshes that back right up to the campsites but for late September/October... its totally worth the trip! read more

Late entry. We stayed at Janes Island October 23, 24, 25, 2015. Staff, facilities, everything was fantastic! Property was clean and well kept, beautiful docks, excellent canoe/kayak launch, can't say enough good things about the boating facilities. Loved the secluded beaches and can't wait to return! Campsites were in excellent condition and freshly maintained. Camp host was very friendly and always reachable if needed. The camp store staff and ranger were all very helpful, knowledgeable, and personable. Looking forward to returning in 2016! read more

Tried to check into mini cabin 3 hours early in November. Park was totally empty. Took 4 people to say check in time was "firm". Fat, dumb and lazy is no way to go through life. This is our favorite park to tent camp at during the cooler (50-75 degrees) months. The park is also great for RVs and water activities (especially boating/kayaking/fishing/crabbing. We love that there are a lot of sites with great views (practically waterfront) and that they even accommodate dogs. Having come to the park for the past decade we've made some observations that hopefully you will find helpful: - As of October 2015 most of the renovations are complete. The bathrooms have been updated along with the welcome center/camp store (now open!) and all the loops have been reopen. (Only the cabin renovations are left.) They have installed a new fish cleaning station next to the dock and a boat house for the kayaks (which now offers newer and nicer kayaks). There is now a new parking lot next to the camp store and it even accommodates RVs. - Each loop offers some benefits. Loop A does not have electricity (and some sites are on the small side) but it is closer to the marina if you are here for water activities. Loop B (and parts of loop A) are pet friendly with electricity and has some of the best Rv sites (practically waterfront, pet friendly, and electricity). Loop C (our favorite) is more quieter and the sites have a little more space and electricity but absolutely no pets allowed. (Loop C also has some great waterfront sites.) Visit the state website to see specs (amenities and site length) and even pictures of each site. This is one of the few parks that I've encountered that posts multiple pictures of each site which really helps with making reservations. - All the bathrooms have outlets so use the bathroom to charge your phone if you need to stay connected. - Camping here during the warmer months can be a challenge because of the mosquitos. One of the major cons is that there are some drainage ditches around camp. Still, any time I've seen standing water, I've also noticed that they put out those mosquito rings (looks like soap on a bar) which is a pet-safe mosquito deterrents. They definitely are very proactive in battling the bugs but July thru September, the bugs usually win. - One great benefit is that if you come here during the warmer months you can go crabbing. Maryland = Crab heaven! The water is usually just steps away (ranges from ten steps to two blocks depending on your site) so you can literally catch your dinner. The camp store sells everything you might need from chicken necks to traps which can be extremely fun for kids and adults alike. Btw cooking crabs over the fire is one of the yummiest ways to eat them (no seasoning required and they can be grilled with the shell on). - A lot of the campground/sites are shaded and being next to the water there is usually a nice breeze. Make sure to bring your camp hammock. :) - It's true that you can kayak/canoe to an amazing beach. It can take 20-40 minutes depending on the tide but it's definitely worth it. (One year we paddled for what seemed like an eternity but we never made it because the tide was not in our favor. Thankfully the fishing was good that day so the day wasn't wasted.) We went for Columbus Day this year and we saw a school of fifty dolphins about ten meters from shore. I've never seen so many dolphins. We brought our dog and took him off leash for a bit. - You can rent boats in Crisfield, Maryland to explore the waterways. We rented a pontoon one hot Labor Day weekend and stayed nice and cool on the waters. Rentals in Crisfield are usually a lot cheaper than what you would pay in Ocean City. Our rental was from Crisfield Boat Rentals who has a whole fleet of brand new pontoons and they were soo friendly and nice. It also helped that the rates were very reasonable. - Like most Maryland parks, the staff and facility is top-notch. I've rarely come across a park that is cleaner or more nicely maintained. Every time I've gone, there is always a ranger, plenty of staff, and even a camp host to help you. They have even added an extremely nice boat keeper to manage the boat shed. Shout out to him for somehow sensing my canoe fears and giving me the best canoe tips/advice ever. You were awesome! Thanks so much for giving us the nicest canoe in your arsenal, washing it out so cleanly, and helping us on and out of water! - This park may not be for you if you like to party and stay up late. This is more of a family oriented campground so almost everyone goes to bed around dark and honors the 10pm silence rule. - It is one of the few parks where you a day visit is FREE. - If your site is near the dumpster (they have two) trash pick up is on Mondays at 7am. We happen to be next to one this last trip and had the pleasure of waking up to the noise. Not a deal breaker but I'm glad I know the schedule now. Happy Camping! read more

Great park for fall or spring camping and canoe/kayaking. Words of advice though: pay attention to wind and tide, we were bottoming out in some of the more narrow spots. Also, the signage for the water trails SUCKS, work your way out from the initial yellow trail down the middle if conditions allow, and take a pair of damn binoculars. read more

We just spent a wonderful weekend at Janes Island! Our trip was originally planned for October but we rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew. We had the best sites in the entire campground. We stayed in Loop C at sites 72 & 73. We were right on the water and had great views. It was a bit chilly on Saturday but we made the most of it and went on a hike through the trails, walked the kids to the playground, and kayaked. The bathhouse was very clean and a short walk from our site. It was such a great and relaxing trip but it went by way too quickly. We will definitely be returning in the spring. One area that could use some improvements is the playground. It's just a swingset and baseball field. The kids enjoyed running around and swinging and didn't seem to mind that there wasn't anything else there. read more

I wouldn't recommend this camp to anyone. Most of the reviews forgot to mention that this place has a huge fly/mosquito issue. It is located next to a swamp so be prepared to experience a horror movie. Sprays, chemicals nothing works. I am not talking about a couple of flies here and there. 40-50 flies will attack you & non-stop. This is a serious issue and all the campers experienced it when we were there. We slept at the car and left early because it was terrible. Under normal conditions it looks like a nice park and people working there are nice but doesn't really worth the time and money. read more

Great state park! We went in late May. The weather was perfect and there were no mosquitoes. It was a bit windy so the kayaks weren't available for rent. However, the sites were clean. The waterfront spots are beautiful. I slept better here in the tent that at home. read more

I loved this State Park! We tent camped here on site 47. We have a dog, and my husband likes to have an electricity outlet, so this is why this site was chosen. However, if you don't have a pet, choose a waterfront site to the right, simply beautiful! Site 47 is facing the water, but a little to close to the park store for my taste. The park is a must do destination if you have a kayak! If you don't you can rent one for about 10.00 an hour or 50.00 a day. Janes Island has 12 miles of water trails. We camped here May 20th and it was slightly buggy....but I can imagine it would be much worse in June, July, August etc... The deer flies are a nuisance but manageable in May. Maybe not so manageable in later months. If you go and don't want to tent camp they are 4 basic cabins with a/c - heat and four bunk beds. There are also 4 full service cabins with kitchens and baths, and maybe more importantly, a screened porch! When you want to venture into town, stop and try the famous soft shelled crabs in Crisfield, MD! Go! you won't be disappointed! Jane.....yes, my name is Jane, so of course I rate it a 5! Started coming here as a child in the late 70s early 80s. We would stay 2 weeks every summer. That was when both the fishing and crabbing were booming. Unfortunately both have all but died. Crisfield is a shadow of what it was back then. So last years trip and this years trip were both nostalgic and depressing at the same time. With that said we still had a great trip. The campground is still basically the same with better facilities. You can still crab off the docks, just not very productive. There are kayaks and canoes to rent and plenty of places to explore in them. Rv sites only have electric. There are plenty of places to fill up your water tank and there is a dump station. They are currently renovating the docks so that should all be new by summers end. Bring plenty of bug spray too, the mosquitos, green heads and biting flies are bad. Sites and facilities are clean. Sites have a nice fire ring grill combo. Plenty of slips for your boat as well. read more
