Often my mornings begin with a loud THUD as I slam my palm down onto the alarm clock, begging for just a few more minutes of rest and tightly pulling the covers back up over my head, shutting my eyes - tightly. Hiding myself in the warmth of soft bed linens I wish I could call home for more than seven to eight hours a day... a reluctant, heavy sigh that escapes upon the realization that it's time to wake up and face the world - a world fueled by coffee, cubicles, recycled central air... and fluorescent lighting.
I was having such a pleasant dream...
Just a few more minutes!
You see, it was a beautiful October day in Paris... the sun was high; the air was crisp and the leaves ... a sweet pungent foreshadowing the winter ahead. I didn't need a jacket that day, just a sweater.
The BF and I were climbing the 235 steps to reach the Basilique du Sacré Coeur ... it was in this excitement that I ignored the wobbling in my legs as we ascended... you can, of course, always ride the Le Funiculaire de Montmartre to the base of the Sacre Coeur at rue du Cardinal DuBois, for the price of a metro ticket... but the walk up is not impossible and really - fantastic exercise. And so I wobbled...and climbed.
From the time I was old enough to pick up a paintbrush, a croissant, and a copy of Vogue I'd always wanted to travel to Paris... A bit obsessive, I am when it comes to the French. Air, Yann Tiersen and Gotan Project are often the soundtracks to my day... a day with characters I imagine in Jean-Pierre Jeunet films.
It's difficult for me to say which of the twenty arrondissements is my favorite... we enjoyed drinks in Le Marais, shopping in Saint-Honoré, fantastic people watching (mostly tourists) in Les Champs-Élysées and Le Louvre... a protest or two in La Bastille... and a perfectly short lived thunderstorm in Île de la Cité visiting Notre Dame...
Of course, we weren't able to fully explore the city, which is why, without question, that I must return to Paris again and again... It's when I'm hitting the alarm (one last time!) with a loud moan that I stop for a second... and reflect on our holiday there...
With fondness, it is the carousel in the Square Willette, the park below the Basilique du Sacré Coeur, that encourages a smile and to embrace the day...
It was when we reached the top of the stairs and wanting to rest a minute and take it all in that I spotted the carousel. A grand Venetian Double Decker, with black and white horses adorned in a western theme of pink and blue feathers and bright yellow saddles, embellished gazebo styled benches where one has the option to sit and go round instead of gallop, steps leading to the second tier illuminated by tiny round bulbs... more of which outline and brighten the frame of the carousel... causing one to look up to the ceiling painted ornately with lavish scenes of Venetian canals. We sat and watched it turn... the laughter of children climbing horses in motion. A beautiful carousel.
Paris is abundant with these ornate beauties that entreat us to remember a time less complicated.
A time without cubicles, recycled air, and fluorescent lighting...
