I have to say that t his review is based on the sale of one item only. So, having said that, I am sorry to say that this bakery sold me the worst pasty I have ever struggled to half eat. The pasty looked okay in the warmer - perhaps a little puffy, even. Knowing that some bakeries use very puffy pastry, I went ahead with my purchase. Warning bells clanged as I took the pasty in its bag from the cheerful assistant. It seemed to weigh almost nothing. Somewhat bemused, I slid the pasty out of the bag and bit into a corner. CRUNCH! The puffiness was in fact brittleness. This pastry was to puff pastry what Salada crackers are to croissants. Worse, 5cm in, there was still no filling. Time for a dissection. With my mouth dry from the fossilised pastry, I peered at the contents of the pasty. The small dob of filling seemed composed of potato, carrot and a few bits of marrow. There were also a few tiny grey fragments that must have been meat. I was unable to eat the whole thing - quite an admission from someone whom a pasty has rarely beaten. This particular pasty belonged in a museum of bad baking. No matter how good the custard tarts or vanilla slice might be at JAS Bake House, I must call it as I tasted it. This is a great place to go for bargain bakery items at good prices. It's a tiny little shop, but when you walk in you see a table full of great value for money buys. Here you can buy some pastry and cake goodies in multipacks. Nice and carbolicious for those times you feel like indulging. I also like to stop here for lunch every now and again. The service isn't too hot depending on who is serving you, but you only deal with them for a short time. I like to have a chicken pie for lunch and if I'm feeling a little carefree I'll have a custard tart as well. These guys know how to make a good custard tart!! If you want to stock up, buying in bulk is cheaper than any other bakery I've been to, so it's worth a trip. read more

I work in port Adelaide for 10 years and been having lunch in this bakery at least 4-5 times a week. Their foods are cheap and fresh. I have encounter many people in the Port area and many of them are very disgustingly greedy. They expect 5 star quality but at cheap as chip prices. I really recommend the people whom has written negative review on this bakery any should go and spend $20 for a honey and a coffee at the Hilton or $15 in some coffee shop on Rundle street. I have a honey log and a coffee for $5. Their everyday cake and coffee special. You won't get this anywhere. Best food, best price, best service. And not to mention their pies. I paid $3.50 for a pie in Jas instead of $5 or $3.50 for a sandwich full of filling then $5.50 for a sandwich made with barely nothing in it made from the cafe store opposite. Well... What an interesting visit! I purchased 4 items, honey stick, Apple turn over, coffee and croissant ( I only wanted a coffee and honey stick, but because of the $10 minimum purchase and had to buy more) I took a bite into the apple turnover to find the pastry solid, fatty and it has flecks of herbs in it. There wasn't a real taste of apple and fresh cream, instead a taste of canned apples and old stake cream. The cream had a thick skin on it and when I opened the turnover, the pastry had a grey color and strange smell. I returned it immediately and asked it this was fresh. I was told it was made yesterday. It was thrown in the bin, and I received a refund without asking. I took out the honey stick and the same funky cream with the thick skin was in it. Again I received a refund with out asking if I wanted an exchange. I ate the croissant which was ok... A little dry but ok. Coffee good on a cold morning. I spoke to the attendant about. Their poor reviews and poor quality of food.... She replied oh well! And shrugged her shoulders. Then the three ladies were obviously talking about me in a non English language. Very disappointing and extremely rude. As I sit here writing this I see all these customers walking in to purchase food. I wish I could stoop them from making a terrible error. Will never eat from here again nor will I encourage friends or family to do the same. Perhaps a walk through with a health inspector might improve there food! read more

Today I decided to have a go at baking Chocolate Eclairs myself after what 'was' my favourite local bakery (past tense!!) let me down in a big way!! I used to buy goodies for the whole family there a couple times a week all because I was addicted to the chocolate eclairs there. One afternoon after sitting down to enjoy morning tea at the beach we found the cream in the chocolate eclair off. Not just old and dry but off, both of us agreed it was not right at all and so although it was a hassle we took it back and let them know politely without making a scene. We were given our money back. We noticed that while they did have a great range of products they never ran out of those cream products and the chocolate eclairs we were buying didn't look great and the cream looked dry and definitely not fresh many days. I have worked at a lot in bakeries over the years and I know 1 bakery I worked at only sold fresh cream products on the day they were made. Another good bakery I worked at which is a massive franchise now, kept their fresh cream products for 2 days and tracked this. I know when cream is fresh in a product that day, whether it is dry and a bit older and I know when it is off and you cannot even stand to eat it!! After the first off cream product my husband tried to discourage me from buying products from Jas Bakehouse at Port Adelaide but I was still hooked on the flavour of those chocolate eclairs and the kids loved their doughnuts, it was part of our weekly shopping venture. Friday afternoons also on our way home from swimming we would pop in. Recently on one of these afternoon trips we came home with our goodies and I started eating my chocolate eclair only to find it was ineddible again. I checked with my husband to confirm it wasn't just my taste buds and we both agreed it was most definitely off and was not worth risking food poisoning and so we threw it in the bin as it was 5 o'clock the shop was shut and it was time to get dinner for the kids organised. When I went in to this bakery again the following Tuesday and bought $15 worth of bakery items again I quietly not to make a scene mentioned the chocolate eclair that we had bought on the previous Friday and commented that sometimes things were a bit old but this was definitely off. I was told by Jas Bakehouse staff that I should have brought it back and I should check all products before leaving the store. I asked if she had 2 fresh chocolate eclairs and she went and got 2 from a different fridge. They always have 2 fridges of products and I am pretty sure this is always their newest ones. These 2 chocolate eclairs that we got this day were a freshly made product, pretty funny how when we asked and told them our previous experience she got them from a different fridge and they were quite drastically different. Fresh flavour, amazing soft texture. Funnily enough I wasn't put off by all this. I went back last Friday on our way home from swimming and got us all bakery treats again and when I asked for my chocolate eclair I politely asked for a fresh one. I had $15 or so of products on the counter and when I said to the lady I had had a couple eclairs before with cream tasting off she said 'no you haven't'. I continued shocked that she was telling me what was fact was not so! She got another lady to come over who said 'no, you need to bring it back if it's a problem. I explained that one time I had and another it was simply too late and too much of a hassle to do this. She contined that I needed to check products before I left the shop. Really should I have to do this? Surely a bakery can have quality control procedures in place and would want to!! I was basically told I was lying. Despite them being extremely rude I continued that I really liked a lot of their products and I loved the flavour of their eclairs I just thought it was important to know the quality/ freshness was struggling. I also said I am just asking if you have a fresh chocolate eclair there that I could buy and she replied 'if you don't like our products don't buy them. I continued 'do you have a fresh chocolate eclair' I would like to buy one along with all these other items and the lady said 'if you don't like our products don't buy them. I left without buying anything. And so I never will again. I WAS telling everyone to go to Jas Bakehouse at Port Adelaide, I will no longer be recommending it at all!!! read more
