Inside there are stacks of pastas, preserves, oils and vineagars and of course, fancy imported wine and cheese in which they specialize. In addition to functioning as a gourmet food store, Botega Rotolo also offer cooking classes at which one can be initiated into the cooking secrets of the Italian masters (like garlic is for slow cooking and onions for fast cooking and never the twain shall meet). The quality of the produce here is high and things are certainly not cheap, but it is quite good value considering what you are paying for.

If you are (or you're a chef in the making) and you're in the market for some couverture chocolate, Italian sparkling wine, truffles, imported pasta, or a spot of caviar - is your mouth watering yet - pay Connie and Rosalie a visit. Bottega Rotolo also hold their own cooking classes. After all what's the use of having all those ingredients if you don't know what to do with them. Their classes include everything from total hands on experiences to demonstrations as well as a combination of the two. They issue a new calendar of classes every couple of months and most are priced at $95. Located on Osmond Terrace at Norwood just before you get to the Oriental Hotel. La Casa Del Formaggio is a family owned Australian business that started in 1988 when an Italian couple started a little shop providing the food they missed from Italy, they're now making 30,000 kilo's of cheese a week. The shop also has lots of dips, nuts, and assorted continental gourmet treats. If they have brie in Heaven, this is what it tastes like.

The best thing about this bakery is that nothing is over $4. In fact I don't think anything even costs $4. The highest amount I've seen is $3.50. You can't go too wrong for that price!

Fear not, I'm here to spill the goss on Adelaide's latest dessert spot (set to lose it's title very soon I'm sure as another dessert opening is always round the corner). The two chefs behind Astonish are Le Cordon Bleu (or LCB to us TAFE kiddies) graduates, originally working in kitchens in Sydney. It really feels like a lot of work and love has gone into this place, and the overall appearance of the store is gorgeous. But hey, as a few other dessert bars around town have shown, it's not all about atmosphere. If you want to have a great dessert bar, well in my books you need great desserts. Astonish try their hardest, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The menu features two sections. The simple things like cakes, tarts, & mousses, and then the more extravagant dine in menu. The smaller stuff is around the $7 mark, but the dine in menu is a little more expensive and will set you back about $12-$18. There are some very interesting (and delicious options), but I did find a few elements of the dishes didn't quite work. The panna fire was an interesting and delicious dish, with a bombe alaska and a slab of vanilla panna cotta. But as a combo they didn't quite work, and would have probably been better as their own stand out dishes. But the giant profiterole on the other hand was amazing, with a crumble on the outer shell that gave great mouth feel, and a filling of ice cream and caramelised banana. YUM. I think Astonish is stil finding their feet, but their desserts are well thought out, with enough pizazz to stay interesting but without going too crazy and alienating some diners. Is it worth the extra price tag? I think so, but I believe that there are a few dessert bars around Adelaide that are worth a lot more than what you already pay.

One you won't find elsewhere is their "Nut Corner", a delicious slab of chocolate coated crunchy nut slice, of crushed nuts held together with glucose and honey. YUM. Hello my week's worth of fat. The coffee when I had it was a little over-heated, but apart from that it was okay. The muffins are small compared to the rest of the sweets, but were moist and tasty. They also do a standard range of pies and sausage rolls to satisfy the lunch seeker, and soft drinks and carton iced-coffees. It's always packed and sometimes I find myself standing in a line outside the bakery. It isn't as if they're short staffed. Every time I've gone in there, they have 4-5 people serving. They're just pretty popular, and honestly, I'm not exactly sure why as they sell the same things as most bakeries. I'm guessing location? During the quiet periods (which I've only seen a couple times!), it's quick and easy to get what you want. As a vegan, I haven't ordered food here or even asked about vegan options, as I don't feel brave enough to ask! It's normally too busy and I feel like everyone just wants to get in, get what they want ASAP and leave. I normally just buy a cool drink and sneak my own lunch and eat it outside under the shelter. My coworkers always get their own rolls made (you can ask for the smaller round rolls if you'd prefer a smaller option to the foot longs). Vegetarians have plenty of options. The reason why I'm rating it 3/5 is because the standing area is tiny inside. The staff have always been nice, but it's just way too busy and crowded.

I ordered a chicken and vegetable pie - unfortunately, there were 2 small pieces of chicken, and mostly vegetable and sauce. Hmmm, not my ideal of a chicken pie at all! There is a lot of seating area outside though ... pity some of that area can't be moved to inside, where they really need the space! I will come back here to try something else - I'm not in a massive hurry though ;)

The pies here are incredible, and there's what 20+ flavours? Many of which you'll only find in grandma's secret cook books. Some of the one's I've tried: Lamb and mint, Beef and stout, Chicken, Chicken Korma, Cheese Cransky, Chilli Cransky, Vegetarian quiche. I also love how the soft drinks feature more than just a Coke or Pepsi range. Portello, Kola Beer and Creamy Soda are some of my favourites. The pies are so filling, and the chucks of meat within are huge! This place will make the Port Elliot Bakery taste like bin juice in comparison.
