I went to the wax bar straight afterwards because I wanted to cry at my nails. They gave me an appointment for the sat morning although I think they got me in after I showed them my nails. They were a joke. I felt sorry for them also as it's not nice having to put some one else's work right. They had no problems with this and just wanted to put them right for me. Sat morning and the service, the treatment was first class here in the wax bar. The girls were lovely and I think they were all pleased including me with the end result. They are now beautiful for a exciting and beautiful day on Monday. I could not be more thrilled with my nails. And this time I have shellac on my nails instead of nail Polish and a clear top coat that just came off with nail Polish. I am so so pleased I choose the wax bar and have to say they have gained a happy customer and I most certainly will go back. I also happened to pick up a price list of all the procedures they do so will definitely be taking some of these treatments up also. Needless to say I am walking on air now with my nails. I have a little gel sticky thing that I occasionally smush through them and I can pluck the odd hair that is out of place, but shaping/filling/anything remotely close to complicated... I'm at a loss. Thankfully, my brows grow SO SLOWLY, that I can get away with a wax every 6 months and a cheapo at home tint (because blonde eyebrows and black hair looks silly). So while I was making the rounds looking for my yearly brow tidy, I found Zen with its 5 star following and the elusive HD Brows. I poked around the internet a bit and couldn't seem to find anything that truly explained WHY HD Brows cost so much more... sure there's a big pitch about 7 different methods, yada yada, but honestly, it didn't seem THAT much fancier than a simple wax/tint. But seeing as though I am brow clueless and again, only have to bite the bullet and actually pay attention to them once/twice a year, I booked. ... and damnit, I'm going to be the gal who spends £38 to get her brows done again. The "magic" of this brow method is really just paying better attention. The gal who did mine cleaned up the top, adjusted the tint twice, waxed, threaded and generally fine tooth combed my brows. The most useful part was afterwards, she walked me through how to fill the sparse bits and I actually might wield that brow pencil with a little more purpose now. The big money making difference: I have eyebrows that look like I actually care about that fact. It was a, "Oh THAT'S what they're supposed to look like" moment. How about the location? The place is bright, clean and the folks are cheerful. It's easy to book (online, in person or over the phone) and they have ridiculously late hours for a spa type spot (open until 10pm on the weekdays!!). Final verdict? I don't think i'd be an HD brow gal if I had to do it with any regularity, but I was impressed enough to return in a few months when they get out of hand. Even if you have to wax/tidy every few weeks, it might be worth flinging this into the mix once or twice a year. This place was professional and I'll definitely keep an eye on what else they offer. I'm gonna go wiggle my eyebrows in the mirror again now...

I also really dolled out for the clear&brilliant series of 3- had the first one now and man that is some intense slightly painful laser action, but after my face recovered (about 6 days) it looked really amazing. I looked at prices back in San Francisco and surprise it is actually cheaper to do it here so I'm gonna keep at it after my 3 are up ;)

Now, Novella does a whole heap of other beauty treatments: nails, waxing, threading, facials, the whole gammit as well as cosmetic tattooing- which is what I was here for. Booking was really easy, can either be done by phone or on their website and I was quickly booked in for a consult with Lorraine. If you're interested in any type of cosmetic tattooing, I highly recommend this place. The little room out the back is kept immaculately clean and during my consult Lorraine explained the whole process from start to finish, putting me at ease with her professionalism and knowledge. Three weeks later, I was booked in for my cosmetic tattoo. I'm not gonna lie, it was painful to start but the whole process was over in about an hour (Lorraine allows two hours for design and to answer any questions at the start). I have to say I'm surprised with the results (a LOT darker than I expected, but apparently this fades by about 50℅ over the week so I won't have angry eyebrows forever). Overall thrilled with the service I received and cannot reccomend Lorraine at Novella for cosmetic tattooing enough.

Firstly it is strictly a ladies salon and plainly says so on their flyer, so absolutely NO men, though I'm not sure where she stands on anyone in between. At first, the lady who attended to us (I suspect she's the owner as well) had a very "don't mess with me" air about her, but she's actually very open to doing what the customer actually wants; a memo I believe many hair salons haven't received. For example, she made a sugar wax especially for my appointment, and was kind enough to tolerate our antics (holding hands, moral support etc) Located on Nicolson street, Mode is extremely easy to find, and apart from ear and nose piercings, as well as any waxing or threading, she's primarily a hair salon, and seemed to be quite an expert at colouring. The salon is made to look quite modern, as many do, but it also extremely clean. Good experience all round.

She washed my hair nicely, although the water could have been a bit warmer and nicer. When I sat down with the woman for the actual haircut (I'm reluctant to call her a real stylist), I said I wanted a little trim of about an inch or an inch and a half and shower her how much to cut off so that it would still be below my shoulders. She seemed to cut and cut, and then be called away for the phone or the front desk, and then she came back and cut some more. When she had finally finished and changed to drying my hair, it felt like she was going to pull my hair out since she was brushing my hair (and scalp!) so hard. In the end, my hair was much above my shoulders and cut English-style so it was longer in the back but just below my chin in the front. Not exactly what I was hoping for, and the experience wasn't the best as there as almost zero chatting during the whole hour (yes it took a whole hour!) I was there. Luckily I had bought this haircut as a KGB deal, but I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend others spend £40 on a haircut here (their normal price).

Given the unpleasantness of the treatment it was (almost) a pleasant experience. In a calm, clean, quiet salon I was lead to a warmly lit waiting room and offered a drink. The well groomed receptionist and beauticians weren't as aloof as those in other salon despite and my waxer chatted to me all the way through as though we were old friends. The treatment itself was fantastic as the woman explained they use hot wax that they rip off rather than using cloth strips. This makes for a cleaner, easier and (marginally) less painful wax that lasted longer than others I have had. This is a more expensive place than I would usually go but worth it as it was a top quality job. They do give a student discount but I would say this is a place for the people of Edinburgh who have more disposable income than the average student. My plan is to ask for Zen gift vouchers at Christmas and head back for the pomegranate facial!

I first booked in for HD Brows which by the way is so worth it. But now i regularly have a sports massage , myriad facial and my hd eyebrows done. It is a bit more expensive than what i usually pay but the service of the receptionist, the beauticians doing the treatment are of such high standard. I now use their products on my face and it is a big difference on my skin. They do block bookings which can save you a bit of money in the long run, student discount and vouchers to purchase. I would definetly recommend this salon if your looking for a real pampering session, they also have branches over in Hanover street and Teviot Place.

The colour is nice, she went for a brown to match the darker bits of my hair and it's striking to me but not all that noticeable to anyone else - maybe my mother if she was about? The only criticism I have is that the lady threaded and then tinted. This is a big no-no with my skin as it's quite sensitive so I've been sporting a lovely under-brow spot all week. There's a £10 minimum on cards and threading alone is £6 so bring cash.

Pure Spa at Ocean Terminal definitely ticks the box on this last necessity as i was well reminded on my most recent visit today. i've been a regular customer to Pure Spa for at least the last year with some sporadic visits when they initially opened. however, now that they do monthly offers (generally half priced spa treatments, excellent value for money!) i tend to put some money aside to make a visit every 4 weeks for a bit of much needed pampering. i can't express in words how much i love this place! today my treatment involved an infra-red sauna session, a back massage, a facial (taliored to my needs), and an eye treatment to help reduce puffines and dark circles. amazing value at £65 for an on peak appointment and only £55 off peak! the infra-red sauna has become a standard of all their monthly spa offers and it's a nice addition. although sitting and sweating out your toxins is probably one of the least glamouress things ever, it is quite relaxing and a nice way to start off the spa session. i've had the same therapist a few times now and i wish i could remember the girl's name because she is excellent and really listens to what i want from my treatments. i had booked the appointment a few weeks ago when just days after a massage i was already suffering from really sore and tight shoulders. i told this all to my lovely therapist and she really applied the pressure to these areas during the back massage. some people might not like quite so deep pressure, but it was exactly what i needed and my shoulders immediately felt so much better. my facial was next and when asked what i wanted i suggested a really good cleanse to help get rid of the every day toxins my skin is exposed to. i love the elemis range of products they use (i use a facial cleanser and toner daily at home) and the facial with the eye treatment was literally so relaxing i could have fallen asleep during it! while the face mask was drying the therapist did an amazing scalp massage and i just felt like a princess in relaxed bliss. needless to say, i will be back here for sure! i've got a customer loyalty card, so for every £10 i spend i get a stamp and 10 stamps means £10 off my next treatment. an excellent way to entice me to keep going, not like i really need it though! love love love this place, it is perfection for feeling like a pampered princess!!!

I felt a little sore but that was to be expected since I had reallly tight shoulders, but it's definatley less so now. I reccommend Pure spa and I will be back, especially for the 25 mins massage. It's good value and dosen't take too much time out of a busy schedule!

When she finished I looked in the mirror and saw how thin she had made them - when I asked the woman doing them why they were so thin when I specifically asked for them not to be made thin, she replied saying she just cleaned them up a little. I saw Macarina Beauty Bar when I was out shopping in Princes Mall last weekend, but decided to try it another time. Today I went in, hoping I wouldn't have to wait. I was lucky. Just at that time there were no other customers. I requested an eyebrow thread & tint + eyelash tint (£25 total). Both were fairly quickly. The dye on my eyebrows was maybe a bit too dark, but it'll settle in no time. Will return as it's good value and just as good, if not better, than the 'guru' Shavata. Note: they accept cash payments only.
