Every Austrian city that relies on…read moretourism has a selection of various restaurants serving the same (nearly identical!) selection of traditional Austrian and Tyrolean favorites. You know the menu before you even see it. Anich is, in my opinion, the very best of them all. Be aware that the food is HEAVY and served in large portions. If you order one of the classic popular meat dishes (roast pork, schnitzel, goulash, etc) you should either be very hungry, prepared to share, or willing to ask for a takeout box. It's a ton of food and it's all stellar. I'm trying and failing to think of something we ordered there that was less than delicious and I can't. The service was not especially fast but I don't mark this kind of restaurant down for that because the meal is supposed to be a slow one. The local wine selection is excellent as is the beer. During a very crowded time you may be asked to share a large table with strangers or so we heard, but in my visits I never saw this happen. It was winter. Summer may be a different story. The building is lovely as are the several dining rooms. If you're looking for a light meal go elsewhere. If you want to be stuffed with dumplings, meat, gravy, and all that great stuff don't go elsewhere.

It was crowded with some international conference participants when we came here for a late lunch. The mountain village of Alpbach is a very special gem. It is known for its unique wooden construction style. Instead of oversized hotel buildings, you can still find authentic wooden houses at 1,000 m above sea level. In many inns there are still original Alpbachtal farm furniture. This architectural style is unique in Austria. Alpbach was rewarded in 1983 with the title "Most beautiful village in Austria." In addition, numerous farms bear the name "Erbhof," which stands for more than 200 years of family property. The traces of old handicrafts and customs are even more evident here than elsewhere. Alpbach owes its wealth of traditions to its street, which was built very late. The current road into the valley was not built until 1926. My trout was pan-fried in butter (photo)--it was so flavorful. Of course, it was a whole fish, so you had to do some work to debone it yourself. I just couldn't remember when the last time was I had such a tasty trout. My potatoes were also very tender and tasty. My wife opted for medium pork loin medallion on a bed of garlic and vegetable puree (photo). It was too much meat for her, so I could enjoy some of it. She enjoyed it very much nonetheless. We were so glad to venture out to Alpbach--enjoyed seeing lots of amazing Tyrolean wooden houses with beautiful flower boxes hanging on the windows.

No reservation made in advance or required at that time of day. Inside was cool with rustic wooden decor and furnishings. Menu contained many of the classic Austrian dishes that we were looking to fill up our stomachs. Portions looked big but it was also nice to find some options that came in smaller plates so we could make sure that we left enough room for one of their desserts. We took a little longer to nail down our meal and we ended up getting some very basic dishes: The small plate of Austrian meatballs were quite tasty with a savory sauce and creamy mashed potatoes. The veal schnitzel was huge and took up more than 3/4 of the plate with a few boiled potatoes. Nice crunch on the outside and juicy veal on the inside but the potatoes were a bit plain. The crowning end to our meal was one of the city's famous desserts, the Salzburg Nockerl. We actually switched from the apple strudel at the last minute so we had to wait a little extra time before the nockerl was served. It's not an easy dessert to make though its main ingredients were eggs, sugar and a little flour. The 3 browned peaks were impressive when served. The raspberry sauce on the bottom provided a sweet add. It was very close to a soufflé with a very airy like texture that melted in the mouth. Well worth the 24.9 Euros charged and the most expensive dessert of our trip. We had great service from the staff and easily accommodate our change our minds on the dessert. We closed our tab at the table and would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting some good food options.

So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

Mildly jet lagged from a 10 hour flight & 2 hour drive, we found a place we could walk to, as we needed to stretch our legs. This place was hard to find, simply because Google maps was slightly off on how to get there, and the Yelp page had it listed as a hotel. In general, the online review world is much more limited in the Innsbruck area, so let's see if I can help that. Menu here: https://www.gasthaus-bretterkeller.at/speisekarte/ We stumbled into a smoky bar full of a few groups/family's having meals and the general feeling was overwhelmingly positive and happy. With our extremely limited German, and the waitresses limited English, we were able to navigate the menu and get a recommendation easy enough, and got our meal & drinks ordered. New to us, we asked about a bowl of breads/pretzels and were told we could pick and pay for what we wanted. Our meal was fantastic. Not light or the most healthy, but delicious nonetheless. Zwiebelrostbraten mit roestkartoffeln (Steak with Crispy Onions with roasted potatoes): The Steak with crispy onions & potato is apparently a pretty traditional dish, it was indeed a hearty and filling meal, the flavor was definitely great, the meat wasn't the leanest cut possible, but that's fine, to be expected. Steirischer Backhendlsalat mit Kernol (Fried chicken salad): The salad was very good too, fried chicken pieces over a green salad (over a potato salad). Once again, not light, but all tasted great. Not a huge place, but definitely felt like it could have been there for 100 years. The patio had a great view over the valley to the north, but it was a cooler evening so not many patrons out there. Only warning I give, as a visitor from another country, smoking indoors is still very common in Austria, so be prepared to walk into a smoky bar/restaurant/shop, otherwise we absolutely loved our meal here! Had we not wanted to try more places, we would definitely return again!
