My Story of Saint Simon... Jay Simon is the patron saint of bankruptcy filers! A saint helps people who are downtrodden and in need. Therefore, Mr. Simon is a saint to me. He is just so kind and nice. Mr. Simon didn't put personal gain before his client's needs or well being (meaning he charges a lower fee and has a very flexible payment plan). Mr. Simon is just a different kind of bankruptcy attorney. I had an awesome bankruptcy experience with this lovely man as my attorney. Let's start with his office. His office offered a warm, welcoming environment. He did a lovely job in decorating his office. It was so warm, like an embrace of relaxation and friendliness. Then there is Mr. Simon himself. He is amazingly cool and so sweet. I just liked him instantly. He is just so perfect and nice. He was very helpful, kind, and positive. Mr. Simon is more than an attorney; he is a 'counselor' in so many ways. He reassured and supported me; both literally and figuratively held my hand throughout the process. He knows this a difficult time filled with anxiety and fear. He was very understanding and sympathetic. The story of what happened at my 341 meeting shows what type of person Jay is: I remember my grandmother telling me that when I got married, I should make sure he was kind. But she might just as well have said: "Find yourself a man who's nice to waiters." The way people treat restaurant staff is, I think, a kind of poker tell, revealing a person's character. A man or woman who is actively unpleasant to waiters is best avoided. Ditto those who patronize them or who treat waiters as though they're invisible. What does that have to do with bankruptcy lawyers? Well Mr. Simon brought me and a few other clients to our creditors meeting after spending time reviewing with us in his office. We were only a bit early, but the trustee was over an hour late in arriving. Mr. Simon did nothing wrong, but he repeatedly apologized for the delay and reassured his group of clients, even though the delay was not his doing. None of the other attorneys present bothered to do that, even acknowledged, or interacted with their clients. Most didn't seem to even know their own clients in advance. Obviously, they were not the ones the clients worked with in preparing their petitions. I love that he had us meet him at his office, a place I was familiar, an hour plus in advance to prepare for our meetings (very calming), and then walked us over to the place we were to meet the trustee; I did not have to find the place on my own and be scared about finding where I needed to go. From the reaction of the court officers at the front door, no other attorneys lead a whole tribe of clients to the court themselves. Anyway, for some reason, there were very few seats in the waiting area. We all got seats, but the later arriving did not have anywhere to sit. One older woman and a pregnant lady came separately. They were not Mr. Simon's clients, but Mr. Simon went and brought chairs from another room for these women. Just so nice. I later saw that they both had their own attorneys, neither of whom did anything to accommodate these women. None of the other attorneys there, familiar with the location, bothered to help these women, only Mr. Simon. Meanwhile, one attorney was actively getting annoyed at his client, who was asking him questions about his own petition (that the attorney and debtor both seemed to know little about). This would not be what I would want in my bankruptcy attorney. Mr. Simon also directed a few lost souls in the hallway to the proper meeting location. He then even pointed them out to 'their attorney', Rene, who was covering for another attorney, as she had never met them before in her life and didn't know them at all. He didn't have to bother helping these strangers, but he did. Unlike other attorneys, Mr. Simon is a true gentleman who knows how to treat people, especially clients. That's who I want representing me; someone who is nice to others, is certainly going to be nice to his own clients. A few other points. He was so reassuring while doing my petition. He provided candy (red Starburst; my favorite). He called two days in advance of my meeting to remind me of the meeting date and time. He sent fabulous, informative letters detailing everything, and I do mean everything, I needed to know both after the filing and after I received my discharge. He answered all of my emails rapidly. He answers the phone himself and doesn't blow you off. He took the time to remind me repeatedly by emails and calls, that I had to do the education course. He thanked me with a handwritten note for using him. There are a few other nice, thoughtful touches, but I assume you get the point by now. There is no one sweeter or kinder then Mr. Simon. Why my bankruptcy attorney is better than your bankruptcy attorney... What makes me think my bankruptcy attorney is better than your bankruptcy attorney? I already knew I liked Jay Simon. He went out of his way to make everything simple, took his time with me, explained everything, went over everything carefully, responded to emails, sent amazingly informative instructions, called to remind me about my meeting, met with me to review, walked me to the meeting. In short, he was kind, very caring, and provided great service. Well, then I went to court last week, to my meeting with the trustee and it was a revelation. There were maybe about eight people waiting when Jay escorted me to the hearing room. We were early, as Jay wanted me to be familiar with the procedure and listen to others going before my turn to be examined. All of the people already in the room were waiting for their attorney to show up. The clients were trying to call the attorney to see where he was. So was the trustee trying to call him. The clients were anxious, scared, and also annoyed. The attorney finally arrived over an hour late. He didn't apologize for his lateness. Rather, he made an excuse that traffic was bad on the BQE. The trustee had been repeatedly telling the clients that this attorney was regularly late. Trustee repeated that to the attorney and he acted as if this was not so. Trustee said he should have left earlier to account for traffic and have called the trustee to let him know he was running late. Attorney ignored that. What bothered me is that he never apologized for inconveniencing the clients (or the trustee) and making them worry on an already stressful day. Obviously, he never had time to discuss anything with his clients, to review with any of his clients before they went and met with the trustee. The first couple who went had an issue with not reporting rent income on their schedules or listing various bank accounts. The trustee was planning to charge him with perjury. Throughout the examination, his attorney just sat and said nothing. Never trying to mediate this situation or protect his client. He kept letting the client repeat that he didn't want the house included in the bankruptcy, which obviously wasn't responsive to the issue of why he left the rental income off his schedules. The trustee kept getting more infuriated and interpreted this as the guy was lying. Still the attorney sat like a lump in a suit. The trustee, of his own accord, finally saw that the man didn't mean to lie and seemed to let it go. I wondered if the attorney had ever reviewed the petition with the client to see if they had all the necessary information. Then more of the attorney's clients went. They all seemed to have houses. For each one, the trustee had to ask him for property valuations and mortgage statements. I asked my attorney why the trustee had some documents and not others? He explained that the attorney was supposed to upload the documents to the trustee prior to the meeting. Not one of this attorney's clients had a complete package of documents sent to the trustee. The trustee had to ask for something for each one of them. The attorney would look in his file with absolutely no sense of urgency. Some he would have, some he wouldn't. Just an overall poor job on his part. If I were his client, I would have been dying. Eventually these eight or so people were done. Then it was my turn. Unlike them, I didn't have the trustee beating me up about what wasn't listed in my petition as my attorney had gone over my petition with me carefully and listed my property and income correctly. In addition, the trustee didn't have to ask us for any documents, as they were already uploaded over to him. I was so grateful to my attorney for doing a good job for me so I didn't end up having any problems, especially in comparison to the only other attorney I saw in action. Later, when I was walking to the subway, I saw that first couple standing in the street. They looked stunned. I politely asked them what they paid their attorney? They said $2,750; which was almost three times what I paid. I don't think they got their money's worth, do you? I walked away saying to myself, my attorney is better than yours. The reason I came to this site in the first place was to see if that other attorney had reviews. I then decided to give Mr. Simon the review he deserves. Just got my discharge and am through with bankruptcy, so I feel it is time to write a review of my wonderful bankruptcy attorney. We never thank good people enough in this world, so here goes. I love the camaraderie Jay has with his clients. I never expected to feel like I was becoming friends with my bankruptcy attorney, but I did. He really got to know me personally and I could tell it was the same way with the other clients that I went with to my creditors meeting. I actually feel like I have made a friend. Jay is such an encouraging person. He has really watched over me throughout the process. He was very easy to deal with. He put me at ease the moment I walked into his office. He genuinely cared about my situation and offered a lot of worthwhile, thoughtful, personal advice. He made the whole process go as smooth as glass. I could not have found a better bankruptcy attorney. Jay is just a special person, not just a great bankruptcy lawyer. He did so many extra things that most other bankruptcy attorneys I don't think do. My mom filed with another attorney last year, so I have a comparison. Jay was quick to get me in for my initial consultation at an inconvenient time for him, but convenient for me, while mom had to wait two weeks for her first appointment. He spent hours just going over bankruptcy, explaining stuff, before I even made a decision to file, while mom's first appointment lasted a whopping 20 minutes and she was compelled to leave a deposit. Jay personally prepared my petition; going right to work then and there, while mom had to give documents to a paralegal, who did the work with a lot of back and forth. Jay took time and didn't rush, as he wanted everything to be accurate. He also answered my many questions, calmly, simply, with a lot of knowledge. He peppered the preparation with stories from his experiences that made things interesting and helped me better understand things. After the filing, he sent an 8-page letter telling me about the meeting, instructing me on doing the education course, and other things having to do with bankruptcy. I received the letter in the mail two days after the papers were filed. Mom's attorney didn't send her anything for about two weeks and she only got a few sentences telling her when and where the meeting was and that she had to be there. On the day of the meeting, Jay had us meet with him an hour prior in his office, to review our petitions and discuss what was going to happen and then escorted us right to the meeting room. I loved not having to worry where I was going. Mom had to meet up with an attorney she never met before at the court. When we were through with the meeting, I actually wanted to hug him, but as I am a male, I thought it might be awkward for him and me. Jay would answer my emails almost immediately and he answers phones himself. Mom's attorney would take days to respond to phone calls or emails. Jay reminded me, like clockwork, that I needed to do the education course that I was neglecting. The day I got my discharge, Jay was on the phone letting me know the news personally. I could hear in his voice that he was happy for me. He then sent a copy of the discharge under a fabulous, informative, full of advice, 18-page, cover letter, which also thanked me for hiring him and wished me good luck. Mom got no such call or letter. Mom only knew her case was discharged when she received the paper in the mail from the court. Last, mom's attorney charged two and a half times as much as Jay and wasn't worth even close to that. Jay, on the other hand, was worth about five times what I paid him. As you can see, Jay made this experience easy and painless. Jay took personal interest in me. I highly recommend Jay to anyone who wants first-class bankruptcy service. He is just one of the sweetest, most generous, friendly, caring, people that I have ever met. December 26, 2014 is the one year anniversary of when I first met with my bankruptcy attorney, Jay Simon. That the date is so memorable to me should indicate to you how I feel about Jay (he didn't want me to call him Mr. Simon, preferring for us to be on a more familiar and friendly first-name basis). Jay is just a beautiful, special person. You just know that he practices bankruptcy with love. He just has that spirit. A person of wisdom. A person of kindness. A person of caring. Jay is unbelievably adorable, so sweet and good. His demeanor is very relaxed and patient, devoting endless time to all of his clients. He is also exceptionally generous. You just know that he is not all about making money, his priority is helping people and their needs. I ask myself, how can one human being be THAT perfect? I'll never fully understand! Sometimes being the best bankruptcy lawyer ever, really is about the little things. He did so many little things that I called them, 'he didn't have tos.' Like engaging in a long, friendly phone conversation before our first meeting; meeting me on a day he was planning on taking off (the day after Christmas) in order to convenience me; not allowing me to call him Mr. Simon; playing relaxing music of my choice while preparing my petition; spending extra time working on my petition to make sure it was done right; explaining everything thoroughly in a cute, informal, non-legalese way; providing candy in his office; sending a ten page instruction letter following my filing, filled with every bit of information I needed to know and didn't think/know to ask; meeting with me in his office prior to the meeting with the trustee to review what would happen at the meeting; escorting me to the meeting from his office; encouraging, sweet, smiles and words; reminder calls prior to my meeting and to do the education course; rapidly responded to Emails; sending a seventeen page letter following my discharge filled with advice for life after bankruptcy with a handwritten note thanking me for hiring him and wishing me good luck; etc. etc. I don't want to say too much to give his competition ideas. Just know, my boyfriend also filed bankruptcy recently and, though he paid way more than me, he didn't get the same treatment and attentive service from the attorney he used that I received (that is why I went to someone else!). Now it is the one year anniversary of our first meeting. Just two days ago, on Christmas Eve, with my bankruptcy over for months, Jay sent me a thoughtful Email note wishing me a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (just another in a series of 'he didn't have tos'). He didn't forget about me and I have not forgotten about him. He is without a doubt one of the sweetest, most genuine people I have ever met. That is why I look back on December 26th so fondly: it is the day that I first met one of the best and most favorite people in my life. I actually consider him a friend, someone I plan on keeping in my life, someone I actually care about. I don't plan on forgetting "our anniversary" or him. I doubt most people remember the date they first met their bankruptcy attorney, but I certainly do. I consider it fate that he became my bankruptcy attorney. This review is my small anniversary "gift" to him, so that he knows how much I appreciate his generosity, caring, kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness, time, service, and, yes, friendship. I think Jay Simon's most important trait as an attorney is his attention to his clients. In the bankruptcy field that doesn't seem to be a common trait to have. I called various other attorneys and met with three of them and even went so far as to have hired one. These lawyers acted like they were doing me a favor in meeting with me, answering my questions or calling me back (oddly, those same attorneys actually have all positive reviews on this and another review site). I dropped the first attorney (after our first, free, consultation lasted a whopping 10 minutes before I was shown the door, after paying a down-payment toward the quoted high fee) and scheduled an appointment to meet with Mr. Simon. Mr. Simon is vastly different then all of the others. He provides superior customer service. He is thoughtful, kind, nice, genuine and caring. His fee was also a lot less than the other attorneys. He was the one and only attorney to talk to me politely, at length, on the phone before we even met. He was so nice in that initial conversation, I knew he would be better for me then the attorney I had already hired. Then when we met, Mr. Simon was so welcoming. He did so many small gestures that conveyed caring and thoughtfulness. He never rushed our meetings. His office was also very nice, cute, comfortable and comforting. Jay is great to his clients and I, for one, appreciate it. Once you spend time with Jay, you realize he is one of the nicest people you've ever met. I love his personality; so sweet, patient, understanding, relaxed, and easygoing. I love that he is genuine and so caring. He has a warm demeanor. He is a noble soul. If you are around Jay Simon enough, you consider him a friend, not just a lawyer. Mr. Simon should know that he is deeply and intensely loved by his clients. Jay takes great care of his clients at a time that they need the most help. When I went to the court meeting, I went with five other clients of Mr. Simon. We talked. I am actually surprised there aren't more reviews of him here or the other review site based on the way the other clients spoke about him; they all loved him. A simple example: Mr. Simon escorted us to the court meeting so we didn't have to worry about where we were going. Once at the meeting most of the other attorneys didn't even interact with their clients. In comparison, while we waited, Mr. Simon was attentive to us all. Mr. Simon repeatedly made eye contact, smiled reassuringly and even squeezed my hand to reassure me that everything would turn out alright (I was very nervous!). He also goes above and beyond in sending information-packed, caring, helpful, instruction letters. I hope each of you has someone in your life that is as wise and steady North Star like Jay Simon is to so many clients. I really liked working with attorney Jay Simon. He is just a great person. Today is a rainy gray day in New York City. I was feeling down, maybe because of the weather and maybe a little bit about life, as I recently broke up with my boyfriend. I was doing some light cleaning when I came across the letter my bankruptcy attorney, Jay Simon, sent me when he sent my bankruptcy discharge a few months ago. Suddenly my mood changed and a bright smile crossed my face as I thought about Jay. I sat down and reread the letter just to remember Jay. If simply thinking about someone can brighten your mood, you know that person must be special. That is when I thought I should write that review I had been putting off. My review.... Jay Simon is one of the sweetest men I have ever met in my life. Just incredibly sweet and kind. He is a genuinely nice, polite man. Not at all what I was expecting from a bankruptcy attorney. His interactions with me put me at ease. He obviously realizes how scary this situation can be and goes out of his way to accommodate and make things comfortable for clients. He just wants people to make it through bankruptcy successfully, so they can have a fresh financial life. He was very supportive and reassuring throughout my bankruptcy. It was great knowing someone had my back. I felt safe and protected with him. He made this hard process seem easy, which I appreciated. All of his other clients that went to the meeting with me just loved him. He treated us all like personal friends. He is the king of kindness. He is a true blessing to clients. Also, the amazing instruction letter (13 pages!) he sent that explained what I had to do, what I would be facing while in bankruptcy, provided answers to my fears, and encouragement, as well as the letter (16 pages, including a handwritten note!) I mentioned above, when he mailed me the discharge, filled with information, advice, and encouragement, show that he truly cared about me and not just doing the minimum to get by. You are loved by so many, and so much, and by no one more than me. - River Song to the 11th Doctor --------------------------------------------------- Just came back from my creditors meeting. I went with a group of six other clients of Mr. Simon. We all love him! Everything went so well for all of us and we were all so grateful to him. So different from the other attorneys who did not show up themselves, or spoke rudely to their clients. Mr. Simon was so nice to all of us. He met with us beforehand in his office, so that we knew what to expect, he reassured us that we had nothing to fear. One attorney, when each of his clients was done with their individual meeting, ordered them away from the table by being short with her when he told her to "wait outside," without looking at her. Doesn't sound too bad, right, but it was more the way it was said; like an abrupt, dismissive order. On the other hand, when we were done with our meeting, Mr. Simon warmly took each of our hands in both of his hands and said how well we did and if we wanted to wait, we could meet outside when he was done with the others. There was a big difference. We all waited and all of the female clients hugged him. No other attorneys were being hugged. One woman, who said she had bad experiences with attorneys, was even crying tears of joy because she was so relieved and things went so well under his guidance. Jay Simon just has a way of putting clients at ease. As an example, during the preparation of my petition, Mr. Simon realized I was a Doctor Who fan (hence, the above quote). Mr. Simon used conversations about a topic we both liked, Doctor Who, to relax and put me at ease while we worked on my petition. He also used down to earth examples to explain bankruptcy concepts so that I was able to relate to them. For example, when he explained the bankruptcy stay protecting me from creditors, he used the shields from Star Trek as a comparison; something I would relate to. (Can you tell I am a Sci-fi nerd?) Anyway, Jay is a special person in my life and now has a special place in my heart. I just love him (again, see the quote above). He has one of the most caring hearts. He has incredible empathy when it comes to others. He is just a nice man, a phenomenal person with genuine warmth. You will never meet a better person. Filing for bankruptcy can be unsettling. Therefore, choosing a good attorney to advise and lead you through the process is important, as important as choosing a good doctor or dentist. After talking to a close friend about my distressing financial situation, he recommended that I do a bankruptcy and he mentioned Jay Simon. I was reluctantly to pursue this course but gradually persuaded to file. Each time, we talked, he kept mentioning Jay Simon's name. I called Mr. Simon and he explained the process in detailed, answering all my questions. After several months, I called him and asked him to file on my behalf. The bankruptcy process requires gathering financial information, documentation, taking two online classes, one of which has an exam and finally, answering questions from a trustee about your finances. This meeting is extremely important for getting your debts discharged, so you want to be prepared to answer questions about your finances in a concise matter. If you have or recently had many assets or assets of immense value, you need a good attorney to explain things to you. On the day of my Creditors Meeting - a telephone conference call involving the trustee and bankruptcy filers - I was able to hear the questioning of six filers before the trustee called my case. The filers are on the call with their respective attorneys. Of the six filers, one only one seemed prepared to answer the trustee's questions. I could hear the anger/frustration in the voice of the trustee as he questioned each filer, who didn't listen to his questions or provide clear answers. My case when very smoothly, relative to the other cases. This happened because my attorney, Jay Simon properly filed and prepared me for the bankruptcy process. At the end of the Creditors Meeting, it was evident to me, that the attorneys on the call had not properly prepared their clients for the interview, which can be nerve-racking. The bankruptcy process is not just about filing a petition to discharge debts. In my case, Jay Simon walked me through process. Taking my hand - figuratively - each step, giving good guidance and advice. His direction and words of reassurance made the process go smoothly. I HAVE NEVER MET ANYONE NICER THEN MY GUARDIAN ANGEL... I read all the reviews of Brooklyn bankruptcy attorneys prior to deciding that Mr. Simon was the attorney for me based on all the wonderful reviews of him here, especially the "hidden" ones. I am now back to add my review to assist others in deciding that Jay Simon should be the bankruptcy attorney for them as well. I just love Jay Simon! I am so glad Jesus brought me to him. He went the extra mile (and then some) and did more then he had to for me. He treated me like I was somebody very special to him (he does not know this, but my mother calls him my "Bankruptcy Boyfriend"). He went above and beyond to make sure my bankruptcy case went smoothly. He made things so simple, easy and painless. He virtually held my hand through the whole bankruptcy process; like my own personal guardian angel, he really looked after me. He is so sweet, caring, warmhearted, patient, compassionate, positive, supportive and not all money hungry. He was so kind and understanding while preparing my petition, he provided such detailed, helpful instructions, answered all of my emails rapidly, was generous with his time, called me to remind me about things I had to do, escorted me to my meeting, supported me throughout, elevated my spirits with his kindness, wrote me a thoughtful, personal, note when my case was over, thanking me for hiring him and wishing me good luck etc. etc. etc. (he actually did a lot more, it is just hard to put it all into words here). Jay Simon has really been there for me beyond just being a bankruptcy attorney. He is like a character straight out of a Hallmark Channel TV movie (and if you know me, that is a big compliment). I felt safe and at home with him. I have never met anyone nicer. I am proud to now consider him a friend. Yes, we have kept in touch after my case was over and he no longer 'needed' me as a client. I doubt many bankruptcy attorneys do that. If you are looking for a bankruptcy attorney who will really care about you and treat you special while guiding you through the bankruptcy process, then look no further then Jay Simon, my own guardian angel! While self-quarantined at home amid the coronavirus pandemic, I thought I would take the time to post a long overdue Yelp review of my bankruptcy attorney, Jay Simon.  Jay Simon does not advertise, preferring to find clients through word-of-mouth with former clients telling family, friends and co-workers, as well as Yelp reviews.  In my case, my sister referred me and she learned about him from Yelp.  My sister really loved working with him and so did I.  I have already referred two close friends and can't wait to tell others.  I just wanted to share my experience with all of you. Jay does the petition and goes to court with you personally.  He provides extraordinary value as he has the most reasonable fee we could find.  He is very caring, likeable and sweet.  He was the kindest, most engaged person either of us have had the pleasure to personally work with in our lives.  Jay has a unique ability to make people feel at ease.  I love his conversational tone.  While preparing my petition, I felt like I was having a conversation with him, over a coffee and sweet.  He also knows how to set up an amazing office with striking Arne Jacobsen and classic Florence Knoll chairs, along with many other intriguing decor items. One of his strengths is breaking down complex issues for us clients very easily and on the fly. I am a big fan of Jay Simon's. How can you not love Jay Simon? He affected my life in the most meaningful of ways. He got me my fresh start and he has a real heart. I have been waiting awhile to post my review of Jay Simon on this particular date. Jay is just the nicest person on the planet, love him so much. What a good man and attorney. I absolutely LOVED working with him the whole bankruptcy process through. How can you not love him? I can imagine no better bankruptcy lawyer. Jay was a pleasure to deal with.
