Four of us jazz lovers visited Caveau de la Huchette on a recent trip to Paris hoping to hear some…read moregreat music on the Left Bank. We arrived there about 10:30 on a Sunday night. Success on that score, but all too brief. Unfortunately, the venue was terrible. This place is obviously interested in collecting as many admissions fees as possible, and unconcerned about the safety of its patrons. The music area was jam packed, with standing room only, and people were literally pressed into one another to the point that it was not only impossible to move, but also difficult to breathe. . And the box office was still selling admissions! Apparently, there's no fire code here. It's super uncomfortable, but if you don't have a loved one to press your body up against, maybe this place is your cup of tea. My group left after about 15 minutes. Bottom line: great music, safety hazard, super uncomfortable and nerve-wracking. Do not recommend.

Caveau de la Huchette is one of those iconic spots you want to love--and there's definitely a lot…read moreto like--but our experience had a few hiccups that kept it from being a full 5 stars. We got there early to line up, but were told by someone to wait across the street, which made things a bit confusing from the start. Once inside, there wasn't much direction or signage about where to go for the stage or where the band would actually be performing. We ended up upstairs kind of waiting around without clarity. When we finally found a spot, the view was pretty obstructed. People would stop on the stairs to watch, which ended up blocking anyone behind them, and the overall setup just didn't feel as smooth or well-organized as we expected (keep in mind this venue is mainly underground). That said, the music itself was great and the energy on the dance floor made it fun once things got going. The location--right by Notre-Dame Cathedral--also adds to the experience. Not perfect, but still a memorable night.

Live jazz on a saturday night. Very good, intimate feel and relaxed. Definitely a neighborhood bar…read moreworth seeking if you want good jazz, good drinks, good people and good prices. Good mix of jazz versions of the american song book ("Can't take my eyes off you") in english, and French jazz standards ("C'est si bon"). And you haven't lived until you've heard "big wheels keep on turning" in French. Guys, this makes globalization worth it. Tourists welcome, although rare when i came. I was the only one. Someone in the audience came up and sang "hit the road jack" so well i'd buy it on iTunes. The house went crazy with applause. We all sang along to "La vie en rose". Call and response on scatting. Talent and fun all night long. Beers and wine were the same prices i've seen everywhere else (except along the Siene) for standard offerings (Affligem, recent vintage Bordeaux, big Rhones, etc). Not sure what other posters are talking about, i didn't see anything over 5 EUR for 12-14cl wines / 25cl beers. Actually that's pretty cheap for Paris. A great find i can't recommend enough!
