Woah... a Blue Note in Denmark????? Yes, La Fontaine is a…read moreDanish Blue Note, oldest Jazz club in Copenhagen in the heart of Gammel Strand ( the beach, back in the old days). Ok, folks here are the rules: 1. No resy's first come, first serve 2. 100 patrons can fit, seating is limited 3. Hours: Monday-Thursday, Friday-Saturday opens at 8pm, show starts at 9pm. You need time to grab a drink from the bar, no table service. Beer @60 krones 4. Setting: intimate and cozy. 5. Get there at least 30 minutes before showtime to be guaranteed a seat, hands stamped and pay 140 krones for entrance fee 6. Then..... sit, back, enjoy and let the jazz seep through your veins as it did mine. 7. Check their website for shows and time. ( sorry Yelp, hours listed were incorrect) I saw a great show with Jules Fisher and his very talented quartet ( see video). Absolutely wonderful! This is the type of jazz club I love, people listening to great jazz, humming a familiar tune, clapping, bopping and enjoying the show in an intimate setting. Sunday is free thus tonight what I'm paying for is my drinks and listening to great music. The entire staff are wonderful, cool, friendly and love being here. Love jazz, love La Fontaine! Location: a bit difficult to find: take M2 or M3 to Gammel Strand station, find Hermes shop and walk all the way down until you find La Fontaine. It is before Comedy Zoo place. La Fontaine has a small banner and entrance is behind a large wooden door. It is located on a little street, Kompenstrade.

Really nice and cosy jazz bar. The drinks were good and on weekdays they offer a large beer for…read more33Kr, which is great! They played perfect music for a comfortable hangout with friends, on weekends they have live jazz! Also, what I liked was, that smoking was only allowed in a separate small room (no door, but still). Totally recommendable!

Very cozy spot--great drinks, chill music, friendly staff. Feels really intimate. Only downside, as…read morea non-smoker that has been conditioned by smoking bans back home for the last 15 years or so: it was kind of a shock to enter and be hit with the cigarette smoke. But it wasn't the end of the world for me, and I still enjoyed a few beers here on a chilly, sleepy Tuesday evening in early March (2022). If you're a smoker: you're in luck here! No going outside! If you're not: just know you'll be around it. For cost reference: my Tuborg Pilsner draft (great beer btw) cost 49DKK or roughly about 7.50US$, which I would say is par for the course for Copenhagen. EDIT: I spoke too soon! Apparently every night around 20:30 a live local jazz band comes in to play--and they're fantastic! To help pay the musicians, prices on drinks raise once they start playing--so my beer went from 49 to 56 DKK (a little under 8.50 US$), but that's more than a fair price for the great show!

While traveling, I love those little coincidences that bring me to cool places. This was one of…read morethem. I had been walking past this little basement bar and decided to stop in because they had been advertising their traditional Danish sandwiches. They were all out. It didn't matter though because I stayed for a beer. They had a bunch of more crafty beers like Jacobsen made by Carlsberg. I had a light wheaty one. The bar was filled with locals in intimate chats with each other, some of whom were smoking. The bartender and I started chatting after I ordered my beer. The conversation steered towards beer and bikes (two topics I am big fans of) and he dropped a little line about his uncle starting the Larry vs. Harry cargo bike company. I freaked out a little because a few of my friends ride BULLITT bikes, shipped from Copenhagen. I added visiting the bike shop to my list for the next day. In addition, the bartender knew I liked craft beer so he said I should visit this one cool craft beer bar. He wrote it on a napkin. I shoved it in my purse and pulled it out the next day. It read "Mikkeller". I had totally forgot Mikkeller was made in Denmark. I also went there the following day. Hvide Lam is worth a visit if you are looking for a good beer, an intimate space and some good lunch food (I heard it was good anyway).
