Not one to normally leave reviews, but this feels necessary. On March 12, I scheduled an appointment specifically with Dr. Haupt--his first available was March 31 at 1:30 PM. I arrived at 1:35, filled out the short new patient paperwork in under five minutes, and then sat... and waited. Over an hour later, I asked the front desk how much longer it would be. She said, "We have two doctors today--you're next to see Dr. Haupt." About 15 minutes later (nearly an hour and a half after my scheduled appointment time), I was brought to a room. A medical aide briefly went over why I was there and said the doctor would be right in. Then a doctor entered--not Dr. Haupt. She was friendly and professional, and I initially thought maybe she was a resident working under him. I expected he'd join at some point. He didn't. Instead, she left to ask him how to handle my case--whether to get ahold of my old x-rays or send me for new ones. She came back and said they'd skip x-rays entirely and base the custom orthotics on numbers I had told them. That felt strange for a first-time visit involving custom made orthotics, but I went with it. I also showed her a mild toenail fungus, and she said they had an OTC product in-office I could buy. When the aide returned to do my casting and take payment (my insurance doesn't cover orthotics), I mentioned the OTC product so I could pay for everything together. That's when she said, "Oh yeah... we're out of that." No one mentioned it to me. Glad I brought it up. While waiting for the cast to set, the aide scheduled my follow-up and said the orthotics would take eight weeks--though I was originally told six by the "resident", possibly sooner. The aide said they might try to expedite. I asked how long the next appointment would take (since this one had already taken nearly three hours), and she said about 20 minutes. I then asked if I'd be seeing Dr. Haupt next time, since I never saw him today. She said she'd make a note. I told her not to bother--if he didn't care to see his new patient today, why should I see him next time? At this point, he knew nothing about me. I may as well stick with the "resident" I was pawned off to--without warning. The aide couldn't explain why I wasn't informed that I wouldn't be seeing the doctor I scheduled with when just minutes before being taken back, I was told I was "next to see Dr. Haupt." Imagine my surprise when I never did. It wasn't until I got home and looked up the "resident" I saw that I realized she wasn't a resident after all--she's a completely separate podiatrist. No one told me that. I left extremely frustrated. I called my husband, and we agreed I should cancel the orthotics order and request a refund. That conversation was just as disappointing. The manager never introduced herself, never asked questions, never apologized, and showed the same impersonal, dismissive energy as the rest of the office staff. She said she needed the doctors approval to bypass the system and issue a refund--you know, the doctor I never saw--and that she'd call me back today. She didn't. I ended up calling back two minutes before the office closed just to follow up. I was told the refund would be processed. Now I wait and see if that's actually true. At least the aide and the doctor I did see were personable. That's about the only positive thing I can say. Bottom line: This office feels outdated, communication is terrible at best, and no one seemed to care. I'll absolutely be going elsewhere--and I strongly recommend others do the same. Bonus update: I spoke with my primary care physician--the one who referred me to Dr. Haupt. He was livid and genuinely embarrassed he sent me there. He said Dr. Haupt will be removed from his referral list immediately and will make sure no one else in his office recommends this practice again. read more

This is a unique review as I was a patient of Dr. Haupt waaay back when around 1998. I was born with horribly flat and debilitating feet that walking let alone jogging as an young lad of 8 years old was extremely painful. After 4 reconstructive surgeries, I can honestly say my life has been transformed as a result of this human. Hello I am a caregiver for my brother that has been coming to see Dr. Haupt for a month. I had called to get some paper work signed. I waited patiently to get helped. Karen, a staff member at that office first began by mentioning she is not Familiar with that state paper work and wouldn't be able to help us. She stated that she has been working there for 30 years. Which makes no sense that she had said she's never seen this before considering it a common and public form. After another person waiting there pointed out there was indeed a portion that WAS supposed to be completed by the doctor or physician in charge, she said she "could" have it turned over to the doctor, but there would be an additional charge for this. This despite the fact I had called ahead asking for specific help on this form and was told that there wouldn't be a charge since we were charged within the last week for another portion of the same class of State forms. When this was explained to her, she mentioned that there was a certain fee for this, which was also different from what I was charged initially. She reached over my belongings still in my hand for the receipt she had just handed over while simultaneously "asking if" she "could look at it". There is a correct way of handling this and the way she handled it just frankly wasn't professional to say the least. read more

I saw Dr Haupt to fix a hammer toe and straighten my big toe on the same foot. Personally I liked him a lot then. During surgery, he fixed my big toe and my hammer toe. But put a pin in a perfectly normal functioning second toe and operated on the third normal toe. He apologized several times about the pin, (had to be in for Six weeks once it's there), never told me why that was done to two normal toes. I'd ask and somehow I'd leave without an answer. He operated 6 mos later on the two toes that were fine before I saw him and with no improvement. A year later they are so messed up, cant walk on them w/o hurting. One goes up the other hangs down. He had another doctor with him that was learning. He was at the surgery center both times. Maybe he's the one that did this to me. I'll never know. Now I have to try and find a good doctor that can hopefully try to fix this painful mess he did to me. All I could do is notify my insurance for them to report this to someone that can followup. Honestly, what he did to me should be in his record and he should have to answer to it. read more

Office is very hard to reach and charged me for a brace I did not receive or ask for. I went in for a twisted ankle and was charged for an ankle brace I did not ask for. After attempting to reach his office multiple times I finally got through and was told they had made a note to remove the charge only to find the charge was never removed upon receiving my bill. I also had a request for an MRI that I was never able to complete because the office had never sent proof of x-ray to my insurance. When I called in to the office (again after multiple attempts) the office answered, quite impatient in tone, and promptly asked me to connect them to my insurance because she "didn't believe" my insurance faxed them the required information to move forward with the MRI. I visited their office a long time ago before Dr. McCarter retired and their office is just as fantastic as it was then. The staff is super nice and helpful - also they're extremely helpful with explaining things if you're ever confused. And Dr. Mercado, who was my doctor for my visit, was extremely nice and caring. I have a anxiety panic disorder, so after I explained that to the doctor he was calm and supportive and continued to ask me throughout the appointment how I was and if there was anything I needed or that he could do to help. I also informed him of my fear of needles and medical equipment, and he was kind enough to offer me different options(such as lowering the chair so that I wouldn't be able to see what he was doing to my feet) so that I'd be more comfortable. I would recommend this office to anyone who needs to see a podiatrist, especially if they have a fear of medical procedures or have anxiety. I had an absolutely wonderful experience! read more

I call to get another pain shot I'm allowed four a year and I've gotten two and I find out that they referred me to a neurologist 3 months ago and didn't tell me and obviously no information from the doctor about that so they are refusing to give me a pain shot until that's done. and that doesn't even make any sense because since they did the referral I've gotten a pain shot from them so they're basically lying about the process and there's so much bickering going on they don't even know when my pain shot was and when the referral was it's just they're acting so stupid all the time. I finally got my orthotics 17 weeks later while normally you get them in about four weeks at other places...why because the doctor took 4 weeks to even submit the referral to insurance which I had obviously been checking on often and after it was submitted was approved the next day. plus if you need any adjustment to your orthotics the doctor lies and says it takes one week and staff insists it's always 4 weeks! never got a night splint for my plantar fasciitis. I've also just been left in the room not knowing the doctor isn't coming back and couldn't ask all my questions! read more

I'm sure Dr Haupt is a fine doctor, but here is what happened to me. I called to make an appointment for my wife who is late stage 6 Alzheimer's. I explained everything while making the appointment. They said they had to have her Medicare and supplemental insurance numbers so they could pre-approve her as a patient. I got the information for them and called it in. They said "Ok you're all set". I waited 2 weeks to get this appointment. I had to leave work, go home, spend 1 hour getting her dressed and ready to go. She is very frail and has a sprained ankle and ingrown toenails. She is in pain. When we showed up, with masks, they said that they had to have her insurance card or they wouldn't care for her! The only picture I.D she has is an old passport. She hasn't driven in 5 years. I explained that I was not told she would have to have the card for treatment. So, I said what do we have to do so the doctor can see her. The said without a card, they would not see her! I was not give the option of paying cash, which I would have gladly paid at that point. Dr Haupt is the medical version of a Super Hero. I'm a polio survivor from the 50's, Dr Haupt has basically reconstructed my right foot. I went from 6 screws in my mid-foot to 2 screws, not to mention the 5 other Dr's who agreed the surgery was very necessary but also stated that They could not do it. But my reason for this review is to praise the staff. I've watched these ladies for over a year and l've seen them in just about every situation imaginable, and they handled them very professional.Being a Nurse myself I know what they face, front and back office. The one thing I have learned is these ladies " Karen,Berta,and Josie" (and ladies forgive me if I misspelled anyone's name) do everything they can to keep that office running smoothly. And the one thing that I learned is if you want to make the journey faster,don't talk,listen. Dr. Haupt took over Dr. McCarter's practice when he retired. I can tell you as another physician that Dr. Haupt is detailed and hard working. He has seriously saved my son from recurrent ingrown toenails. He is kind, funny, and could be charging a lot more but doesn't because he genuinely cares about his patients. When I mentioned how much another podiatrist in this area charges for laser for toenail fungus, he told me he didn't feel right charging that much! I have to say hands down best Podiatrist in OC. I consider myself to be a very hard critic, moreso after dealing with other podiatrist and or having to deal with their staff that have made me feel more insecure about myself then when I originally walked in their office. I had nail fungus that first started on my toe, and over time spread throughout all my nails on feet. But wait! Then I found Dr. Haupt, the first time I called in I had so many questions, I thought for sure the young lady was going to be annoyed and abrupt. However, Christine answered all my questions and concerns, I have to say Christine was my first point of contact, saying that she was beyond exceptional is an understatement. I got set up to see Dr. Haupt, keep in mind although my first experience was great with just setting up an appointment, I was still insecure about my feet. Then BOOM Dr. Haupt introduced himself, explained in detail as to what's going on, and procedure what procedure would be best. The whole visit I felt a sense of ease, and comfort. Set my surgery date, day of surgery Dr. Haupt stop by to see me and just made me feel at ease again (All 10 nails removed). Even after surgery for my checkups whether I talk with Christine, Karen, or Josie the girls are very personable and always make me feel welcomed.
