I must admit it was more than a year ago we took my mother in law for lunch as birthday treat. We had drinks, a glass of wine, lager and lime, fruit juice and a tea. The service at the bar took time ( maybe staffing issue), when I ordered the tea, I could hear somebody say that will take some time. When the tea arrived it was warm but soon became cold in the cold pot jug. Mother in law did not want to make a fuss. We had to ask for menus - although we should have had a party 5 so in many ways we we should have made it clear when we arrived. We ordered for our main meal two pies - chicken and mushroom and two fish and chips. The fish and chips were OK, albeit my father in-law's fish was upside down - not presented well. The chips were OK but quite boring. However the two pie meals were less than satisfactory, one plate was cold, both meals had an absence of taste and moisture in the pie and in my wife's and mother in laws view not enjoyable and were really very boring. The chips were bland - and the gravy was lacking in substance and did not add to the taste experience. The vegetables arrived after the meals - although crunchy they had wrinkled, possibly due to being left in cooking water and consequently had little to no taste. The chicken pie meals were left partially eaten. We chose at this point not to risk pudding ( although we were not even asked) and settle the bill. I expressed dissatisfaction with the person at the till - who said they would pass this onto the chef.
The Jenny Wren has always been seen as a place were one would receive good service and quality food in a cosy bar environment. Today the bar was less than warm albeit the radiator behind seemed to get warm.
We left and went off to find a cafe for a coffee and cake which was in effect our pudding.
really do feel there was significant lack in the JW delivery that day which has very much lowered our opinion - and as I said the to the bar lady - there certainly were no awards to be won after todays offering, She apologised - we settled the bill.
We had four meals a round of drinks for £51...... in my opinion too expensive for mediocre pub food... and we did not have the birthday treat we had hope to have. We did complain by letter and in the end they gave us a voucher - which was OK, was redeemable against our next purchase - it did not really incentivise us to go back. read more
