What can I say about the King's Arms? I'm at home here. When we moved to the UK, honestly our most…read moredesired feature was walking distance to a pub. We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

Went here on a sunny Sunday for a roast with the boyff. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable…read moreexperience. I am conflicted about giving 4 not 5 stars, and have deliberated over it for a bit, so I will re-assess once I have been back there. This is a typical old school English pub, with all the character and quirkiness that you would expect. On entering you are met with a very chirpy smiling waitress at the bar, and I felt my eyes shifting around to take in the character of the place. There is a TV up in the corner that was showing cricket / golf, but turned down to a level that meant that it wasn't affecting anyone, but loud enough if you wanted to see if England were getting tonked in the Ashes or doing okay! There is the original beam work and brickwork throughout and you can't help but imagine what it was like back in ye olde day. The toilets were lovely, fresh and clean. They had a toilet that flushed properly - can you believe it?! - and actual real toilet paper, not the industrial coil of doom that lets you tear one sheet at a time and leaves you utterly frustrated! Smelt lovely, and not in that over bearing sanitiser spray that can make you choke, but in the way you have at home once you have given the bathroom a good clean :) It is quite obvious that this place has undergone an extensive re-decoration, but under a careful and tasteful eye, keeping all the charm about the place and replacing the old with new contemporary toot! Now onto the food, we went and sat in the garden and didn't have to wait long for our food to be bought out to us. We both ordered a Sunday roast, (which they actually offer in 3 different sizes, much to my delight!). I ordered a medium chicken roast and the boyff ordered a large beef roast. The roasts were bought to us by the chef which I thought was a lovely touch. The food itself was top draw!! Like seriously, the standard you get when someone actually invites you round to theirs for Sunday dinner and puts a lot of effort in. I can't remember the last time I had this standard of a roast in a commercial place and not from some older relative that has made her Sunday roasts things to talk about! It was utterly delish! The roast potatoes were scrummy, meat cooked perfectly, the veg was spot on too. I could not find 1% of fault with the food. Lovely garden area, a snooker and darts area and a snug. I am sure on my next visit I am going to be persuaded to notch this up to the 5 star mark (maybe finding a post dinner chair to slump in will be it!)! I love this place and me and my friends are already getting dates in the diary to go back here!

Now on to the incredibly unfortunate part: My breakfast. I ordered the Lebanese breakfast plate, which is avocado toast zhuzh'd up with hummus, fresh cream, feta, eggs, and purple cabbage (yes, the addition of this brassica should have been a red flag). What I got was a cute turquoise plate with a mound of what was my order covered in bright pink sludge masquerading as hummus. I'm guessing the chef thought that pink hummus would be an inventive choice against the plate color? Aside from the color, the taste was horrific and most-definitely not homemade. Hummus is at its core essence a 4-ingredient situation (chick peas, water, tahini, lemon juice) but this tasted like only the first two items were used). Underneath my "hummus" was a shed load of boiled cabbage and the lightest of smatterings of old brown avocado which tasted like avocado when it's gone brown and should, therefore, be binned. So two stars for the quaint ambiance and take my warning seriously and steer clear of what I ate. Hopefully, their other offerings are better.

With just half an hour to spare before it closed (it's only open till 3pm) we sped to the restaurant to find it bustling with customers. The menu is extensive with what must be around 50 items including a specials menu and loads of veggie options. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich (£6.50) which was dripping with a ridiculous amount cheese. The order also came with a pot of slightly salty tomato soup to dip the sandwich in. Overall the breakfast club has amazing hangover food in a homely environment. Portion sizes are huuuuge too!
