I would say 'The Diner' restaurants are OK in general. Not to good, not too bad. If you're quite hungry and want some comfort food, it is your place. You can find burgers, fries (with melted cheese, hot beef chilly, smokey onions...), sandwiches, hot dogs and some salads. Kind of American Dining style! I like the fact they do 'All day Breakfast', so you can order eggs, pancakes or full breakfast dishes for the entire day. It is quite convenient if you feel like having pancakes for dinner hehehe Regarding the drinks, I have to say I love their Milkshakes, specially 'Oreo Shake'. Delicious! We went yesterday night for quick dinner. It was OK. Burger+fries. I ordered 'California Burger'. It was good enough but I have to say that the guacamole that comes with the burger was quite dry and tasteless. I'm a little surprised by the sheer number of bad reviews. I didn't eat here, nor did I spend that long here, so perhaps that's how I escaped thinking this place was terrible! I came here on Sunday night, some time close to 8 pm, and was surprised at how full the place was. We were just looking for a place where we could grab a couple of drinks, and, if possible, get a little snack to eat. As there was just two of us, we got a half-sized booth. It felt a little squeezey, and I sat with my back to the partition dividing us and the other booth, and my legs sticking out into the corridor just so I wouldn't keep bumping knees with my friend. After ordering our drinks, the waitress came back and asked us if we wanted to order, which confused us mightily given that we'd just ordered, and wasn't that the very same waitress who had taken our order? After a while, I figured it wasn't the most intelligent thing to be drinking on an empty stomach on a school night, and ordered a serving of chilli fries. They turned out to be quite enjoyable - better than the fries I had that same day at Guerilla Burgers. The bill for two drinks (one house white and a beer) and the fries came up to about £13 inclusive of service. All in all, not wonderful, but not horrible either. read more

So glad I discovered this place! Basically, The Diner is really simple, comfort food, burgers, and wait for it...ALL DAY BREAKFAST. I ordered the vegetarian breakfast and the food was delicious, but still a little bit hungry after that, I ordered two sides so the total came up to 11£ for all that food...cheap if you ask me! I've been here a few times and find the place to be ok, not fantastic. Some things on the menu are excellent, like the hard (alcoholic) milkshakes and desserts. Otherwise, the food is decent but the prices a bit absurd. £7.50 for a burger with no fries? About the same price for a small vegetable burrito without a proper side of refried beans or a decent salad, but a few leaves thrown on the side as a 'garnish'? On the positive side, the guacamole was quite good. I found the service to be good, polite and attentive. I'm surprised by the last reviewer judging this place as expensive, as I was surprised how cheap the food was here. Hmmm, perhaps I'm spoilt - definitely feel cheated for not having a lovely little place like this around the corner in Notting Hill The diner has a lovely retro feel to it, just as you would expect a good-old-times diner somewhere in imaginary America. Staff and punters look the part, too. Glad the music wasn't authentic in that is was a good mix of 80's rock. I love the way the burgers are served up in little plastic baskets. And that they have veggie choices, and the greatest selection of different types of fries I have come across. Shame about those nasty loos, though. read more

I didn't know this Diner was even here, and we needed a place to eat and fast. Well, mainly we needed cocktails and fast. But, who's judging here? I'd had a mediocre experience at The Diner in Spitalfields fairly recently so I was a little hesitant. However, this Diner was much better. Service is definitely the weak point of this chain of restaurants - I think they need to up their game to be on top of drinks orders and the like, however I will say the cocktails were fab, and the food was delicious. Of particular note - the mac n cheese, as well as the sweet potato fries. I currently have a sudden detest for pulled pork but a few of the others had the pulled pork burger and LOVED it. We had tried to eat at Blues Kitchen where they told us we'd have to wait an hour, so this was our second choice. Really glad we went here. Sometimes all-american calorific food is just what the doctor ordered. read more

I had made plans to meet with a friend for pre-Christmas dinner and drinks; he forgot to inform me of one thing; namely that he was coming to meet me dressed as 'Badass Santa' in black leather chaps, and that he would have several similarly dressed friends with him. This is relevant to my review of Shoreditch's branch of The Diner, for reasons that I will get to shortly. Anyway, I felt spectacularly plain next to my festive friends and they were definitely full of more Christmas spirit (s) than me, thanks to what seemed like a bottomless bottle of Grand Marnier that was brandished every 15 minutes or so by one of the 'Santae'. It was the very beginning of our East London adventure, and a sensible soul who was aware of how drunk she might get without something to line her stomach suggested we should get some food. Let's go to the diner! Someone shouted. Its warm red neon lettering conjured images of steaming hot grilled all-American goodies. I was sold. On entering, it became quite clear that unlike the happy revellers on the street, the owner of the first bar we had visited and the customers of this place, two people were clearly not happy to see us. They were also the people that were going to be serving us tonight. One of the Santae attempted conversation with one of the waitresses while playing with a lime that was admittedly not his; he was met with a defensive silence even frostier than the weather outside. So far, not good. They were taking ages to seat customers, despite the fact that the place was two thirds empty. Eventually one of them realised that we could actually be seated in two groups of four, and we were attended to. While the drinks were quick and satisfactory (the all-day-breakfast menu is wide-ranging, and the refillable filter coffee at £2 was a great idea) the food was shocking. I made the fatal mistake of ordering eggs Benedict (I was in a morning mood, OK?) which came overdone and with synthetic-tasting hollandaise, other dishes came lukewarm and another Santa chose to overlook the underwhelming taste of their onion rings. There was no point in complaining, it was clear that they didn't like us from the outset and I didn't want to get my food spat in. So what can I say? Go to The Diner if you want to be surprised by the laxness of the service rather than the quality of the food. And don't go with anyone dressed as Santa. read more

The menu is typical diner, though my bite of a bacon cheeseburger wont pass for American without bacon being served up 'our' way. The fries and milkshakes were tasty. The idea of this place is much better than the reality. The menu screams comfort food: all day breakfasts, burritos, piles of nachos and cheese, substantial burgers. There's even a tempting boozy milkshake menu! The first time I ate at the Shoreditch branch I was reasonably impressed with the huevos rancheros and the Choconaut milkshake (rum and chocolate) made me pleasantly giddy, thought the whole endeavour was too expensive to warrant regular visits. Last week I returned for a sad veggie burrito - bland and impossible to hold - and a very watered down Choconaut - all chocolate, little rum. The cheesy fries were a welcome side addition to my meal though they were pretty saggy and the only flavour was in the cheese. At least I had food - my friend's burger looked tiny...while the bill remained big! To add insult to injury the cheeky automatic addition of the service charge on the bill made me vow never to return Either you meekly pay it regardless of what you thought of the meal, or it causes a big fuss if you don't want to pay it. Does exactly what it says on the tin. Classic Americana in East London - you can taste the States. Sandwiched between some drinking and some dancing, The Diner provided a perfect refueling stop, and no doubt put paid to any alcohol meets empty stomach debauchery [on my part]. A huge table housed plenty of us, located at the rear this is the best table in the place, a really sociable big booth that's perfect for groups. Staff were friendly and good natured, easily putting up with our semi-sober mixed up orders and staggered eating times. Burgers were delicious and everything else on the menu looked big time too. I've always been a fan of diners. They are a bit of classic americana that don't always translate well when moved to foreign shores. The Diner in Shoreditch has made a pretty fair attempt though. The booths (always essential) are there as is a familiar menu of burgers, shakes, salads, burritos etc. Service was a little poor when we visited from breakfast. We were the second people through the door after opening yet it still took 20 minutes to take our order and a further 30 to get food on the table. If they can get the service sorted then the Diner gets tops marks from me. read more

This place has gone downhill a little recently. The growing number of fashionistas in the area seem to be spreading their aloof attitude around with a trowel. Unfortunately the waiting staff don't seem to realise that they are employed to serve food not pose in the corner chatting to their fellow waifs. I'm glad I didn't read any reviews before I went to the Diner, or I may never have gone in. And what a meal I would have missed out on! We came here on a whim, looking for brunch food and curious about the thought of milkshakes. We had to wait 10 mins to get a booth (as we're used to in most places in Shoreditch, so no big deal). The service was absolutely fine in my opinion. Maybe Sundays are less crazy? Certainly the waitresses had a full house to attend to but we never had to wait, and everything came as it should have. (For the record, those complaining this is not an authentic American diner... you're right it's an American-diner-themed restaurant in East London! Jeez, most Mexican places are nothing like authentic Mexican food and yet everyone still loves to eat there. Let it go). We started with fries and milkshakes while we waited for our friend to arrive. The fries were fries - nothin' special but just what we wanted - and the milkshakes were heavenly! I love the fact that in addition to your tall glass of milkshake they give you the rest of the shake in the stainless steel cup so you practically get two whole milkshakes! Thick, creamy, lots of flavour... Love love love. Our friend arrived, and ordered macaroni cheese (tasty, although not life changing, but then - it's mac & cheese), as well as chilli fries; my other half had the Mexican Breakfast and demolished it (he said he'd get it again); and I had the huevos rancheros with the eggs poached. Which was spot on, and only £6.20. Ordering took a lot of deliberation as the menu has so many enticing options. Love that you can also get every side dish you can think of, from hash browns, to french toast. If you like a build-your-own breakfast you can totally do that here. Despite the place being full and people always coming in looking for a table, we never felt rushed and were there for an hour and a half all up. I was surprised to come home and read the rubbish reviews, however, despite that I will still be going back to The Diner again. I guess I don't expect much from a casual, diner-themed restaurant. Went in for lunch today (early to avoid crowds) and enjoyed a bottle of Banana Bread beer along with an open meat loaf sandwich and wet chips. The service was reasonably speedy and the food was certainly filling but perhaps lacking a bit. The meatloaf slices sat on bread, all drenched in gravy. The only other item on the plate was gherkins - I don't like them. The Wet Chips, I dreamed of proper chips and gravy but alas they were merely fries with thin gravy. Although it doesn't sound positive the menu is quite extensive so I will be going back to try things like their burgers, pancakes (which are hard to find in the UK for some reason) and the other myriad of interesting items on the menu. e Good for some stodge. read more

The manageress was a serious cow who acted like she was doing us a huge favor taking our order and messing it up twice without any apology. The worst! Firstly the delivery driver arrived with not only the wrong order but a half drunk drink with slimy saliva all around the neck of the bottle! When he returned with our actual order we were greatly underwhelmed. For £8 I got the driest, most bland burger of my life. Literally a dry bun with one lettuce leaf, an over ripe floury tomato and some badly sliced red onion with a boring slab of mince meat. My partner got the Meat Loaf Hoagie, another disappointment; a sad looking piece of meat & a bit of pickle & cheese slapped onto a dry bun. And to top it all off the whole lot was COLD!!! So COLD in fact we had to microwave the meat and chicken wings to actually eat it. Finally the milkshakes everyone bangs on about. Firstly, not a milkshake at all- actually a thick shake. I needed a glass of water to chase every sip I had it was so thick. Way too much chocolate flavoring and way too many chucks of chocolate throughout it The biggest waste of £30 I've ever spent. Always busy despite the new (sort of) competition from Byron and Red Dog Saloon round the corner in Hoxton Square. We use this as an occasional takeaway after a long day out and a need for comfort food. We usually grab the chilli plus some hot dogs better than average but not great. The shakes are good. Going to this american diner, i loved the way it was decorated and the seating etc. We ordered out food, some burgers and cheese fries. however once the food finally arrived after waiting soooo long and we were starving by now i was very disappointed as the food was cold and the cheese fries were so badly stuck together that by trying to pick up one chip, instead all the fries would come up. If you go to New York these places are two a dozen however in London this is one of a kind. The name says what it says on the box this is a diner with intimate booths, burgers, thick shakes and fries. Not the best place to go if you are on a diet but a brilliant place to go if you have had a heavy night as the eggs Benedict with a side of pancakes are sure to knock any hangover to the curb. I wandered in last night in need of some comfort food. I have to say that I started out really wanting fried chicken, bbq beans and mac & cheese. They don't have mac & cheese or fried chicken on the menu, but all was not lost. We decided to try a little tex-mex instead. I ordered chicken fajitas and B had the chicken burrito sans queso. I think the burrito filling and my fajita fillings were the same, but tasty. It's a saucy, a little bit spicy, mix of grilled chopped chicken with a few beans and onions in the mix. They'd heated my tortillas up and they even had browned spots, bonus! The guacamole was very good. Plus they had Lone Star and Pacifico, and the Pacifico came with a lime nestled in its neck. So these folks know cheap american beers. They are not exactly cheap american beers however, as they cost 3.2 quid a bottle. If you need a little bit of a tex-mex fix, order the burrito (there ain't no rice innit) and perhaps some beer. read more

What kind of service do you expect in a restaurant? The Diner strives to recreate an American burger joint feel in London. The menu? Burgers, all day breakfast, fries and pie, menu tacked on the wall. Vinyl booths and a visible kitchen. Three wait staff for less than twenty tables. I know what kind of service I expect in a joint like this. I expect that, for six pounds a burger (fries not included), my basket of food should arrive promptly and taste good. Neither happened. I've just come back from lunch at this Diner. After waiting 35 minutes for my fish burger to arrive (and watching people who arrived after me get served their food first) I bit into a well-undercooked burger. Fantastic. Complain? That would require the waitress's attention. My lunch date had finished his lunch before she arrived back at the table (50 minutes after we were first seated) and I had to be back at work. Once she cleared the table, it took another seven minutes and two reminders before she brought the bill, which we then had to go up to the counter and get another waitress to ring through. I'd excuse her if she was busy, but she was standing fifteen feet from us, polishing silverware. Were the cooks so busy that they could serve an undercooked burger? There were five men cooking, and half the tables were empty. Customer service in most UK restaurants and pubs is a bit of a joke for the most part. The wait staff generally ignore you, it takes a long time to get food, orders are messed up, and most don't even attempt to be friendly or polite. I've grown used to it, but that doesn't mean I like it. Today, I've had quite enough. I was hungry, I was spending money in their restaurant, and I wanted my food on time and cooked. Is that too much to ask? To get what I paid for? No. As a comparison, we had a full dinner on Sunday evening at a new Indian restaurant near our house. There were only three wait staff, but we had our entire dinner ordered, served, and eaten (delicious dinner, I might add) in less time than it took to serve me a half-cooked piece of blackened fish in a plastic basket. So if you are ever in Shoreditch and looking for a burger for lunch, don't go to The Diner on Curtain Road. Come to think of it, don't go to any of their other branches either. Very disappointing experience. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was almost empty. When it arrived the waitress had misunderstood our order and look surprised when we complained about it. The burgers were very disappointing, the meat felt tough, flavourless and over-cooked. Won't go back again considering there are several other better burger joints in the area. The restaurant feels tired and like it's catering mainly to tourists who just want a quick bite to eat, but won't necessarily go back to the same restaurant again - which makes it quite a disappointing experience if you're looking for a nice meal and friendly staff. This is the first time I've been compelled to write a review of a restaurant.it was that bad. The charm of a real diner is the crackling speed at which plucky waitresses get you in and out with a belly full of hearty/greasy cheap food. That's it. It's very simple. Hipster paraphernalia does not a diner make. I wouldn't be so bothered by the silly emphasis on theme if the food and service wasn't absolutely TERRIBLE. We went to the Shoreditch location on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait in a line to be seated for 20 minutes, staring at three booths wide open the whole time, everyone silently begging someone, ANYONE to just friggin' clean them and seat all of us My boyfriend had a breakfast burrito which came with a mound of fried beans that looked and tasted as if they'd been sitting out a few days, getting crusty like leftovers, and then just re-heated in a microwave. The fluffy stack of buttery pancakes I had expected turned out to be three small, cold, sad, rubbery saucers that tasted/looked like fake plastic ones I played with in my kiddie kitchen set. Aunt Jemima would be horrified. Luckily I had also ordered a milkshake which was delicious and earns them two stars, but really, how can you screw that up? If anyone is imagining this is what a real diner is like they will be sorely disappointed and Americans should be particularly aware that they risk catching a bout of unlooked-for homesickness in this place. read more

I have been going to The Diner since they opened (I live 3 doors down) and it used to be good. This place is seriously suffering from the Chain effect having recently opened other branches. We waited an hour for breakfast last week, and when it came it was cold and tasteless, as well as being the wrong thing. My husband had mentioned the Diner many times in the last few months, and chose to go there for his birthday lunch last friday lunch. We had to wait about 5 minutes for a table, and had definitely timed it well since there was a queue shortly after we were seated. The meal that we had was worth a far longer wait - it was excellent! The cheeseburger was one of the best I have ever had - just the right thickness and very juicy. The milk shakes looked good as well, although I didn't go for one this time - I'll save it for the next visit! Rarely Leave bad reviews but have never left a restaurant feeling so agitated and bemused by the service. I would never eat here ever again, would recommend you all to walk 1 minute further into Hoxton square to eat at the breakfast club.
