I purchased two purple pillows ($239.99 each) and was not told up front by the salesperson, Fred,…read morethat they had a LATEX core. We were, also, not told up front that they were not returnable, which I should have asked about in the first place, in case the loft of the pillows was not appropriate for my neck. One pillow was left unopened in the box, and the pillow I chose to try out has a defect in the purple grid. I let the pillow air out for almost a week in order to be able to sleep on it, due to the chemical smell. The morning after I slept on it, I had a blister and rash on my face, as well as, a severe headache and stuffed sinus. I went over the paperwork and discovered that the core of the pillow is LATEX, which, again, I should have either checked into first, or should have been told about up front. I contacted the store to share my story. The salesperson from whom I purchased the pillow was not in that day, but the man with whom I spoke assured me that they would take the "unopened" pillow back, but not the other pillow because it had been opened and used, even if it did have a defect. He would have the manager contact me. I would have to contact "Purple" regarding the defective pillow. I did just that. A Purple representative told me I had to deal directly with the store from which I purchased the pillows. If I had purchased the pillows through their store online, there would not be any problem, but being as I purchased them through a store, the store's policies took precedence. My husband then called the store to tell them "Purple" would not take back the defective pillow and to ask if they would let me exchange the defective pillow. The girl with whom he spoke said that she would have to check with the manager about the defective pillow, but assured my husband that they WOULD take back the unopened pillow. She would have the manager call us. This was the second time my husband and I had been told that the manager would contact us. We decided to drive the hour to the store, and the first thing we did upon arrival was to ask to see the manager, Kevin. We both explained the situation and he just kept saying "No, we won't take them back; It's our store policy." I stated that he might want to share with his employees that they might want to explain the policies to the customers at the time of sale. He came at me with, "Now, you're trying to tell me how to do my job." I explained that that was not the case. I stated that we were told we would receive a phone call from him, the manager two separate times, but never did, and that evidently there must be a problem with communication. That didn't sit very well with him, so I just said, "I'm done here," and started walking out the door. I don't find it helpful to engage in arguments. He was still yelling at me when we walked out the door. My recommendation is to purchase household furnishing from small town businesses or upscale businesses such as McGowans or places that treat their customers with gratitude and respect.

We picked up the chair and within 2 weeks the same chair had broke so we inspected all the chairs and the weld job on the chairs is not safe so we asked if we could get a refund and we would purchase different chairs from them and they said no they would try to fix it again that is all they could do. Short Version: This is a pickier version of a thrift store…read more If you enjoy secondhand items and are okay with higher prices to ensure that you're choosing from good-quality items (instead of sorting through all of the junk), the Main Street Exchange is going to be perfect for you. However, the prices are definitely higher than standard thrift store prices. Long Version: This is like the higher-scale version of a thrift store. While I love shopping at thrift stores and picking up items for less than a dollar, it really does require some digging to find things that are in good shape and are something that I really want to purchase. I'm glad that most thrift stores carry the lower-quality items because everybody has their own budget and price range, but I'm looking for second-hand things that don't look so...secondhand. That's where The Main Street Exchange comes in. They are like a high-end thrift store. All of the pieces are sorted through when they accept them, and it looks like they're choosey about what items come into the shop. The clothing all appeared to be in good condition, and the furniture, DVDs, and books all seemed like they were still in "Good" to "Very Good" condition. While typical thrift stores may have dusty, dirty, or broken items, everything seemed to be well-cleaned and in very good shape here. However, along with that comes higher prices. You'll be more likely to find something you actually want to buy (versus a thrift store), but you might have to pay a bit more for the convenience. Nothing seemed insanely unreasonably priced, though, but I'll admit I didn't pay much attention to the clothing. This store sells a good range of things. They have a lot of clothing, and that makes up the bulk of their items, but they also have a book section with adult and children's books. They also have dinnerware and other knick knacks. Downstairs, you'll find some furniture and children's toys. Some of the furniture is on the affordable side ($10 for end tables and whatnot) while the larger pieces definitely cost more ($120-ish for a large wood dresser). I came out with 5 books in really good condition for slightly over $4. Most of the books were priced at 99 cents or 1.99. DVDs were priced around $1.99 to $2.99. Staff was pretty friendly. They were cleaning and putting away things when I came, but when I asked where to check out, one of the employees was happy to point me to where. She even mentioned their current promotion in case I wanted to go get another book for just a penny. I passed, but it was nice of her to let me know that. As a sidenote, there does seem to be a Christian, religious theme going on in this store. There's even a Christian quote printed on the receipt I received. It's nothing that's going to annoy a non-religious person, but there are religious items and books for sale alongside the regular items.

Short version: Stuff Etc. is a decent enough consignment store, and I'd love it if the prices were…read morereasonable. Unfortunately, since everything is second-hand (or third-hand, etc.), the prices here are pretty high - sometimes more expensive or within a few dollars of what you could get it at a big box store. I love how clean they have things, and I like their huge space (that allows for a large selection), but I find that I have to be super careful about prices here. Long version: My love of consignment stores comes from being able to browse shelves and find awesome items for cheaper than I would be able to buy them new. In some cases, I might have to buff or clean the item because of its used status, but usually the large price break is worth the extra work. For example, I bought an end table at a consignment store in town for $5, and some gentle cleaning, and it was ready for home deocration! Now, this is the problem with Stuff Etc. Despite being a consignment store, the prices are extraordinarily high. To give them credit, they do a good job of cleaning/dusting any items that are put out (which is something other stores or thrift stores may not do), but at a certain point, you might as well go shop at a big box retailer instead of buying second-hand for the price. The prom dresses I browsed, which didn't seem to be any type of brand name or anything, were between $150 to $200. For a secondhand store, that's pretty pricey. Oh well. I was hoping to strike it nice in the furniture department. Oh. $100 bookshelves. Apparently not. Even the chairs were over $100. Purses started at $20 for non-brand-name items. (As a note, they do offer delivery for furniture!) The salvation seemed to come in the housewares, trinkets, and books sections. I wasn't expecting magic after the rest of the store, but these sections are priced pretty reasonably (maybe a bit high, but still reasonable). Books tend to be between $3-6 each. A lot of the bowls/plates/cups were $3+. I ended up buying a set of plain white ceramic plates for $7 - which, while not great, is probably a couple dollars savings than what I could have gotten at a big box store. The employees seemed friendly enough - though the check-out process was slow. The only cashier on duty ended up calling up a second cashier, and things went a bit more quickly, but their registers don't seem particularly streamlined to the check-out process. It probably doesn't help that people end up purchasing a lot of clothing here, so that stuff can be hard to checkout. In terms of the building, it's actually pretty large, and there's a pretty huge selection here compared to other consignment or thrift stores in the area. The items are relatively well-organized, and it's pretty easy to find what you're looking for. Items are clearly marked, and everything I purchased rang up correctly at the register. While the place isn't sparkling clean, there doesn't seem to be any dust or clutter (aside from the front-ish area where they do their take-in for consignment items).
