No visit to Block Island is complete unless we visit Jessie's Studio. This is a wonderful gallery with a fantastic array of beautiful art for sale. Much is island themed, but Jessie is very selective and sophisticated. She has 'hidden gems' that don't have any connection to the island but are beautiful works of art. For example, on our last visit around Thanksgiving, we were thrilled to find a superb print by a French artist who did a series of etchings for a Proust novel. We had a hard time deciding on just one, and we love it. Over the past 15 or so years, we've bought a number of paintings and prints from Jessie. She's always a pleasure to spend time with, and the gallery is great. read more

For years, going to Block island has included at least one trip each time to Jessie's studio to check out the new treasures she's added. I've always found something fresh and interesting that I must have. From tiny bits like little differently shaped turquoise vases, linen pillows mapped with the island, one of a kind earrings, to lovely prints and paintings of various sights and secret views by artists who obviously love Block Island as I do. If you want to go to a calm, friendly, beautiful space for a while, then visit the Jessie Edwards Gallery! From the moment you walk in the front door and continue up the steps you are greeted with art and the sound of inviting music drawing you to the gallery where you will meet Jessie. She is a lovely, friendly person ready to answer all of your questions about any of the artists and their work in her very personable way. My favorite artist is Kate Knapp. Her colors make me smile. The studio is beautifully presented and welcoming--- full of striking original artwork and prints in a range of tastes and price points, there's something for everyone. The space is intimate, airy, and down to earth, with great lighting and lots of high quality art. My husband and I were so pleased to stumble in and take a look around. Jessie herself is friendly and personable. We asked her many questions, and enjoyed learning more about the artists' backgrounds. I appreciate the care with which she selects the artists in her gallery and the way in which the work is showcased. Accessible and inviting, you can easily get a feel for how the art would feel in your own home (as opposed to the typical sterile museum-style all too common in gallery settings). Jessie Edwards Studio is a lovely art gallery located on the second floor of the Post Office Building on Water Street, Block Island. The owner, for whom it is named, is an artist herself. Her keen eye has enabled her to create a gallery space that compliments the work of the artists she represents in a unifying manner not usually achieved so well. The artists represented are both local and regional and the works are a combination of original contemporary American paintings, works on paper, wood turnings and fine ceramics. There is something in every price range here. You can buy notepads with Jessie's charming pen and ink illustrations on each page for less than $5.00. Prints, monoprints and paintings range from under $50. to over $1,000. This is not an intimidating gallery, but rather and intimate one. The feeling is cozy and warm and friendly. You may easlily picurore the works of art in your living room, because you will feel as if you are in your living room!
