A place to see…read morehistory The Block island Historical Society is a great organization and does great work keeping the history of the island alive. The headquarters is in a old farmhouse located on Old Town Rd and is only a short walk from the ferry landing. The house has period furniture and lots of old farming and maritime artifacts and a little gift shop. Admission is five bucks and donations are of course accepted. The society has permanent and consistently changing new exhibits including photos and information about the moving of the Southeast lighthouse a few years ago. The Historical Society is a great part of Block Island that most visitors unfortunately never bother to see.

This is must visit for anyone interested in BI history. Turns out is was designed by same guy that designed the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and they're installing an display of artifacts from Lady Liberty. Will have to do back for that. I purchased these 2 beautiful mugs that have this lovely lilac color that you normally don't see in ceramics because they are fired a different way than most ceramics are. Lee was so knowledgeable and loved talking to us about his glazing/firing process. He's been in Newport for 30 years & continues to make beautiful work from mugs to bowls to vases to art pieces! While in Mystic, my friend and I stopped by the Trade Winds Gallery. This is a very small store…read morewhere they sell artwork, antique maps and frames. This really isn't a gallery, the art peices are randomly placed all over the store. Some are a bit difficult to get a full view of because others are blocking it. My friend found an original 1917 map of West Hartford, the same area where his company's office is located. This was a large map at approximately 30 by 40 inches. It was in excellent shape. Despite it's age, nothing had been fading, all of the words were still legible. It came with a protective cover, covering each edge and corner, the front and back. It was $250. My friend is very happy with his new art piece. He talked to Brian the owner of Trade Winds Gallery for a while. He was very personable and knowledgeable about the maps and the artwork in his store. Much is island themed, but Jessie is very selective and sophisticated. She has 'hidden gems' that don't have any connection to the island but are beautiful works of art. For example, on our last visit around Thanksgiving, we were thrilled to find a superb print by a French artist who did a series of etchings for a Proust novel. We had a hard time deciding on just one, and we love it. Over the past 15 or so years, we've bought a number of paintings and prints from Jessie. She's always a pleasure to spend time with, and the gallery is great.

8/3/24: Came to the Saturday session of the 3 day 2024 Newport Jazz Festival 8/2- 8/4…read more Long line entering through the festival security. However, everything was orderly. The Rhode Island State Police and other authorities had a great handle on everything. I've been to the festival a couple of times. Think it's the largest turnout I've seen. Overall, the music was great! Vocalist Samara Joy rocked the house! Lots of frozen lemonade $7 sm.& $9 large size, food and souvenir vendors. There were several wine and beer tents. Just a couple of suggestions for Newport Jazz Organizers for future events. -Having a Jazz TSA type pass that expedites your entry. -A couple of attendees had overhead chair coverings. According to what's allowable or not, it clearly mentions about not using overhead chair coverings. I'm mentioning it because there were two in front of us. The overhang of the empty chair flew back like a projectile . It would've hit my friend, if I didn't catch it. Several other attendees throughout the festival had chair overhangs. Festival Tips: A water taxi is probably one of the best ways for transport to the festival. Be sure to bring/wear sunscreen if you burn.

I have heard about the Newport Jazz Festival for years and finally was able to attend. From Ticket purchases, parking, bus ride from car to venue, to plant-based food options, I was immensely infatuated and pleased. Attended 2 of the 3 days and was able to hear a variety musicians from all the stages. Many new musicians I was not familiar with but now am a certified follower of their artistry in music. Definitely return again, and Newport is such a lovely elevated area with a serene feel which so reminds me of Yacht Rock on SiriusXM.... All good vibes!
