If you enjoy the Grand Canyon but find the crowds a bit much, Marble Canyon offers beautiful, canyon views along the Colorado River with no one else around. If you're a photographer who enjoys making images in places where you can savor the wild beauty in absolute quiet, Marble Canyon is an ideal destination. As a bonus, not many photographers will have images from Marble Canyon - especially along the east rim in Navajo Nation.
In July 2026, my nephew and I spent a week with Reuben Smith of Jhani's Tours, camping along the entire length of the eastern rim of Marble Canyon. In planning the trip, I researched various viewpoints along the rim with Google Maps satellite imagery and Google Earth, selecting locations where I thought there would be good views of the canyon. Reuben worked with my itinerary while adding his broad and deep knowledge, bringing us to numerous additional viewpoints which I had not identified.
Throughout the trip, Reuben was attentive and helpful, striking the perfect balance between offering suggestions and leaving us to make our own decisions. The amenities he provided added greatly to our comfort during the trip.
I would encourage any photographer who enjoys desert sunrises and sunsets, capturing the rich colors of twilight sandstone, and perhaps (with some luck) photographing wild horses to arrange a tour with Jhani's.
