When I want laksa, which is strangely more often that you would initially think, this is the first place that comes to mind. Originally I became a fan of Jimmy's when they had a store near Circular Quay, but as my work drew me closer to Town Hall, this one became my regular. This place is brilliant for a heap of reasons. First one that comes to mind is value. For less than $10 for a combination laksa is a bargain. It is fast. I am telling you this place puts fast food chains to shame with the speed these bowls come out even if they are serving 15 people at a time. It is fresh, filling and warming. Oh... and it tastes amazing! Figured I had better mention that... :-) Though it is not just laksa they do well. My other favourite dish here is the nasi lamak. It looks pretty average, served on a plastic plate, but the flavour is surprising. Check out the pics from this venue if you've never seen it before, but basically it is a rice dish with a side. It also comes with dried fish, chutney, and half a boiled egg. Honestly... rather than go on and on about it, just head done and give it a go. You get to choose what you want with it (curry of your choice) and again, it is brilliant value.

I am beyond in love with this place and my new found dish Chicken Laksa!! I have never tried Malaysian before and my friends brought me here.. I had no idea what to order and my one friend sugested the noodle soup. I have never had a noodle soup before and was very hesitant but after a few moments back and forth I decided what the hell.. worst case I don't like it. I don't even know how to describe the reaction my taste buds made from the moment the spoon touched my lips. I loved every bite of it!! It will be a place I will be going back to time and time again. It does have a downfall as well and that is that this place is pretty much a shopping centre fast-food place and has limited seating so be prepared to take your order away or arive outside of the busy lunch rush to avoid disapointments. Also this place accepts cash only so arrive prepared. Great hidden gem around the CBD!

Best laksa we had in Sydney after also trying Chinese-Malay Takeaway, the other highly rated place that was on our list (I still think the laksa I had at the hawker courts in Singapore was better). We shared a giant bowl of mixed laksa with beef and seafood (fish balls, mussels, etc.). Ask for the card where you can choose your own type of noodles! They have a very efficient line going, and the food comes out fast -- highly recommend this as a quick and casual lunch spot in CBD.

Really disappointed with my lunch today, beef rendang is still tough, need more time braising, all the beef sinew hasn't falling apart yet, and my fried rice just plain dried, with no taste at all The biggest struggle during lunch to swallow that food.

Tried combination laksa. Super fast service, you will have your laksa in 30 seconds. The most important part of laksa, curry soup, is what you expect from a good laksa. The thin rice vermicelli is standard and average. But, the combination topping is not good enough. Combination means you have a bit of everything, chicken, beef, fish cake, mussel and prawn. Shredded chicken is tender, but beef is tough. The seafood is just not fresh. The portion is generous but the ratio is not right. Too many noodles with a little toppings.

There are a lot more options.... Laksa is soso. Not going to come here to have it again. I feel queezy having so much oil

The queues don't lie. Laksa lovers should seek out Jimmy's Recipe. Now I'm fairly new to the soupy goodness of laksa. I'm still learning to appreciate its subtle flavours and spiciness. But fortunately my visit was flanked by laksa aficionados, who assured me my rather simple declarations of "awww yum!" weren't at all unfounded. If you work near The Galleries Victoria then be sure to duck down past the Arthouse to try Jimmy's Recipe. I'm sure I'll find myself back there - if only to perfect the recipe.

Very tasty and in expensive. The Hainanese Chicken Rice is of a good portion size and the ginger and chilli accompaniments are delicious. Served with chicken broth soup. The already cooked food in the Bain Marie is hit and miss depending on how long it has been sitting there for. I say freshly cooked order is BEST! The Laksas are also very tasty.

The pictures and reviews looked good, so I decided to check it out. You can go straight to the counter and place your order. You have the option of eating in or taking it to-go. I ordered the Nasi Lemak. As advertised on their menu, it's their signature dish. This is Malaysia's national dish, it's a fragrant coconut rice dish served with peanuts, crispy anchovies and pickled vegetables. I got it with beef rendang. Instead of beef, you have the option to get it with chicken curry. I never had Malaysian food before, but this breakfast dish was very similar to what Taiwanese eat. I thought it was not bad. I'm pretty sure it's good for Sydney and you would most definitely get something better at Malaysia. If you're eating in, once you're done, you can bring your plates and utensils to the counter.

Everything tasted super authentic and perfectly cooked and seasoned. The portion sizes and protein content was definitely above average which is impressive as the prices were extremely reasonable. The staff was happy and attentive and the space was large and clean. Solid 4 stars ! Give it go

Within 30 minutes after checking into our hotel room, we "hit the ground running" and headed…read moredirectly to Ho Jiak Malaysian Grill & Nyonya House in Haymarket since we were hungry and craving Chinese comfort food. Our Cantonese heritage taste buds from Hawai'i would have been happy with steaming hot bowls of soup noodles and dumplings after our long travel day. Still, I suggested to my husband that we eat a familiar Asian cuisine we wouldn't usually get back home; hence, Malaysian & Nyonya were the answer. I had bookmarked Ho Jiak Haymarket because it was in the Chinatown neighborhood, where we also planned to explore, and it was about a 15-minute walk from there. We were certainly glad that we didn't have to wait in line to get in, as Google Maps photos show. We were seated immediately and took a few minutes to scroll through their extensive menu, then chose items from the Lunch Specials Menu. The Lunch Specials Menu included an entrée (choose from 8 selections) and a beverage (non-alcoholic or alcoholic) for A$25 or around $17 USD. FOOD: -Hainan Chicken Rice + Teh Tarik (cold): I received a half slow-poached chicken, fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, and a bowl of chicken broth. The chicken was garnished with fresh cucumber slices, bean sprouts, and cilantro. Also, it was served with chili sauce, soy sauce, and finely chopped ginger root and garlic. The tender poached chicken was juicy, non-greasy, and tasty. This dish was a healthy and toothsome meal. Teh Tarik is a Malaysian "pulled or shaken" milk tea, and I requested it in the cold or iced style because the outside temperature was quite hot. The Teh Tarik was refreshing, thirst-quenching, and flavorful. A$25 -Char Hor Fun + House Beer (Asahi Dry 330 ml): My husband selected this dish, but didn't know what to expect as he doesn't read or speak Chinese. Admittedly, my limited reading of Chinese characters suggested that this dish might be similar to my "usual" Cantonese childhood comfort food, Wat Tan Hor. When the Char Hor Fun was delivered to our table, I immediately recognized it as Wat Tan Hor, except that the egg sauce contained tender pork slices, shrimp, green vegetables, fish cake, and, I think, chunks of fish. The flat, broad rice noodles were stir-fried in soy sauce for additional seasoning, and we could tell the wok heat was perfect because there were very few broken noodles. When the server brought the House Beer, my husband was pleasantly surprised to receive an icy cold bottle of Asahi Dry. A$25 -Loh Bak: We selected this appetizer because of its description and our pork-leaning taste buds. Loh Bak is five-spiced pork jowl rolls wrapped in bean curd skin and deep-fried. We were thinking these pork jowl rolls would surely whet our appetites, and the deep-fried rolls didn't disappoint. A$20 This restaurant was lively, friendly, and clean with authentic-tasting Malaysian and Nyonya flavors. The service was prompt, amicable, and helpful.

I was dining solo so I was seated immediately, a plus since it was dinner time. The vibe gives off mom and pop shop where you can enjoy home cooked dishes. Honestly, the menu is a tad bit overwhelming but I opted for one of the signature dishes, Char Koay Teow -- spicy stir fried flat rice noodles with seafood & Chinese sausage. It reminded me of Pad See Ew prolly because of the flat noodles! It's good but the portions were heaping so the more I ate it, it became saltier with every bite. Something to take note when ordering, as the plates are for sharing. I think what attributed to the 3-star review was for the mixup/snafu. They accidentally sent my order to another table even though I got there before the other party. They apologized profusely, and I saw all the commotion happen in the kitchen and staff to get it all sorted out.. but not gonna lie -- that still put a damper to my experience. I also ate my chicken curry filled roti (which was phenomenal btw) since my main order took longer to remake after the other table touched the order that was meant for my table. Anyway! I do appreciate the staff for checking in and asking how I liked the dishes. Pro-tip, you don't need to ask for a check/bill, you can simply pay up at the counter. I should definitely stuck with my gut to get the laksa. Oh well, another opportunity to come back I guess!
