I can't say enough wonderful things about Jane and her team at JOC Lactation Consultants, nor am I adequately able to express my gratitude to her and her team in words. I originally contacted Jane after my son's initial discharge from the hospital after his birth. I contacted her on a Sunday, assuming that she'd call me back on Monday. To my surprise, she called me right back. On a Sunday, nonetheless.! I soon learned that this is Jane's MO. She cares so much about her clients -- she always responds to phone calls and emails quickly to ensure that her clients' concerns and needs are addressed as soon as possible. We were scheduled to meet with Jane two days after our initial call, but, unfortunately, my son had to be readmitted to the Prentice NICU because he was severely jaundiced. I called Jane to inform her that I needed to cancel our appointment since my son was in the hospital. She was extremely understanding and comforting and urged me to pump every 2-3 hours while my son was in the NICU to maintain my supply. She even sent me an email demonstrating the paced feeding technique. Mind you, I had not even met her at this point! My point is that she's an extremely busy woman and had no reason to go out of the way to help me. She truly cared about my son and I! A couple of days into my son's NICU stay, Jane even called me to check in to see how my son was doing. I was pretty much an emotional mess while he was there, and although I still had not met her, speaking to her during that time provided me so much comfort and peace., as she assured me that things would get better.
Unfortunately, while my son was in the NICU, he regressed in breastfeeding, having gotten used to drinking out of a bottle, and refused to feed at the breast. I met with several lactation consultants while in the hospital, and they all had me trying about twenty different techniques (short of trying to feed him while performing a back flip) to try and get my son on the breast and left me feeling very discouraged, like my son would never breastfeed again and that I would be enslaved to pumping. My son's regression caused me to get very depressed, as I felt like I was failing as a mother.
Two days after my son was discharged, Jane squeezed us into an 8 AM Saturday appointment. I was completely down in the dumps, and Jane was incredibly encouraging. Whereas all the other LCs that I had met with, and articles that I had read, had made me think that we would never be able to reestablish our breastfeeding relationship, Jane assured me, in her very motherly way, that we would get back on track and that I was an excellent mother to my son. She comforted me by informing me that I had not done anything wrong and that my son would eventually get back to the boob, once he grew and matured a bit. She urged me to do as much skin to skin as possible and gave me practical tips ofnhow to do so. Sure enough, after another private consultation with Jane and attending several Lactation Stations, my son latched again, and we now have a wonderful breastfeeding relationship. In fact, although our breastfeeding troubles are largely resolved, I continue to attend the Thursday Lactation Stations put on my JOC Lactation Consultants, because I just thoroughly enjoy spending time with Jane and her team and am always comforted by their presence.
If you are in need of a LC, I urge you to contact JOC Lactation Consultants. It sounds dramatic to say so, but they literally saved me, and I will eternally be grateful for their help and guidance. read more
