I have been investigating and researching a variety of mortgages over the past few months (FHA,…read moreHELO & HELOC, and HECM) because it has taken that long to answer my questions, get a general idea of costs and what's involved, and to interview people that I feel I can trust with my home and personal info. I wish I could say that it could have gone easier but it has actually been the AGENTS who made this process so painful along with misleading online claims about these various loans and what's involved. Let's just say that my interaction(s) (thankfully, I only had 2 with this guy) were less than professional. All "first phone calls" seem to be exactly the same....it's a positive, upbeat interaction that tricks you into thinking they WANT your business until it goes further and my first call back was exactly like other brokers I spoke to. That's what I cal the "over promise and under deliver" technique, people like this just chat you up then it's the luck of the draw if they ever get back to you. Carlos did call back once and spoke very briefly with me, and I sorta got the idea he was actually doing something with our loan but no....(!) that wasn't what happened. They want to keep you on hold while they shop for a better (or perhaps easier) customer or loan it seems. Luckily I have zero trust for anyone in real estate so when a local realtor sent someone to answer some questions, it was THAT broker we went with. I decided NOT to call Carlos to tell him that we had changed (I tested him to see if he'd call) but I really didn't need to since he never contacted me again after claiming he would follow up soon. In my case it became urgent as far as needing a loan since so many people had wasted my precious time by pretending to actually be interested (or knowledgeable) when they aren't. The sad thing is....you have to keep "interviewing" brokers to find a good fit, I suggest that everyone do this since many (like this guy) only care about HIGH commisions or the ability to do a loan blindfolded (not into circus tricks, myself) and it seems that most have forgotten WHO the customer is, they do what's comfortable for THEM. No thanks! Those people are a 'dime a dozen' as my dad used to say....so tread carefully when seeking out a loan. Since I'm a blogger, I plan to write about this whole hideous nightmare for local news (I've done writing for the VC Reporter, VC Star, and Ojai Valley News) as a warning for others....it's a minefield out there! My loan is now in process thanks to someone who actually cares and is authentic, and it was very different from the beginning (no schmoozing, more like "let's get to work!") so you may want to look for the same when looking for a loan. Don't take anything for granted, many are simply great BS artists so if you're at risk of losing your home, don't waste time....you could end up with a terrible outcome as we almost did.
