But I think I've found my regular local salon in Oscar Oscar, Paddington. I've been coming here for a while now ever since it started off as Synergy in Darlinghurst and I've haven't had a bad haircut yet (fingers crossed). The colourists are all very knowledgeable and seem to know exactly what I want. Also the stylists have the same experience and provide recommendations on the perfect balance between funky and ok to present to the office. However I have seen customers with some crazy haircuts which i wish I had the guts to get away with. Hence I think the salon caters for everybody from the polished office professional to the funky Surry Hills artist. The staff are friendly and I love the herbal tea they present you with when you sit down. The waiting time is usually short unless they are overly busy (I've waited much longer at other salons). The rapport they have with clients can be described as "eastern-suburbs" if you know what I mean, but they are not snobby or condescending. Don't you hate it when you go to an up-market hairdresser and they act that way? I've had that experience before but I haven't had one at Oscar Oscar. Definitely recommend :)

I have visited this salon maybe 4 or 5 times to get my colour done and these guys are amazing. The last time I went there just before I went to New York and a friend of mine who manages Super Models (no I won't name names) told me he LOVED my hair colour. Now if that's not a compliment I don't know what is. The thing about Toni and Guy is it is expensive but when it comes to colour I think its worthwhile making the investment. I've had a few different colourists look after me and they've all been excellent. Enjoy the pamper time - you deserve it.

My colour + toner/treatment and blow dry came to $60. So good for this city, especially as the state of my hair was so bad when i walked in that some would have called it a colour correction. So essentially you sit down with your student, they ask you plenty of questions (as they really do not want to do the wrong thing, probably more so than regular hairdressers which I am stoked about as I am a total fusspot) and then they write a few things down and report to their supervisor. They tell you exactly what they are doing so you get no surprises and then go about their business. I would say the application was similar in time to most other salons. The woman doing my hair was a gem and I found the other students working around her to be an absolute riot. The only reason this didn't get a 5 (being that I am super happy with the result!) was that there was a lesson booked an hour into my consult so my student stopped doing my hair for a while and the supervisor washed it and put the toner in. It wasn't explained to me that the two were combined so I thought I had lost the treatment which was essential given the quality of my straw hair. Anyway, it all came good and the colour has settled really nicely after a few washes and hasn't all run out (this has happened to me before at a different salon). Big thumbs up! The best way to judge a hair stylists ability is to look at their own hair and see how it's done. Their cut will probably not be far off that.

Cuts can tend to be fairly hit and miss and the stylists don't always listen to what you want. They use to have a guy working there years ago called Poppy who did brilliant and stylish cuts, but I don't know where he's gone. Nancy (style director) gives pretty good cuts and the odd great cut, but they usually need a few days to settle in. Recently I went all out and saw the Art Director and I'm less than impressed - likely to the point of not returning. At $114 bucks to see the Art Director, I walked out thinking it was the *worst* haircut I've had in years (but after a few days of settling in, it's OK, but not brilliant - and definitely not what I asked for). And I doubt the cuts are worth the $100+ price tag. Overall I would have given this place 4 stars had it not been for my last experience, but that's what you get. Hit and Miss.

We've channelled Posh (that in itself is a category), we've done the Gwynnie, we flirted briefly with a Jessie J but alas it's hard to carry a candle around with 24/7 to make me look young enough to get away with it.
