I'm suprised by the bad reviews. My experience has been mostly positive. I've been with them since 2009. A year after we moved into this house our HVAC system died and they replaced it with a Carrier which worked great for 16 years (low end of the expected life) until it died last December on the second 5 degree night we had. We really needed some heat! We are on the JBAC annual maintenance plan and the tech came out at 10 PM and said, yep, it's dead. (Luckily we had a gas fireplace to keep us from freezing.) Estimator came the next day, showed us some options, and the day after that a crew came out and installed a hybrid gas/heat pump system which has worked great for the past 8 months. I enjoyed the annual maintenance included with the JBAC plan, and it has more or less paid for itself in reducing or eliminating service fees for other issues. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was about 10 years ago they installed a pricey UV air purifier unit (my wife had asthma) which died a few weeks after the warranty ran out. Hopefully they don't continue to peddle bad products, but the rest of their work has been great and they are always polite and friendly. read more

They are not respectful of the customers time. I scheduled a routine maintenance service and chose the 12-4:00 time for the service. They showed up at 8:30 am. I scrambled thinking I made a mistake, and after they looked at my furnace for 10 minutes they said we can't do any maintenance because we need to replace parts A and B before we can even begin to do the yearly maintenance, and we will add on an additional service fee to as an additional insurance , good for one year in case we need to come back. This is the second time I have experienced this from this company. It's an extended warranty type scam. RUN don't walk away from this company. Complete and total fraud. read more

They messed up the install of my air conditioner but won't live up to responsibility of making it right. I've called several times since last week and no on will return my calls. I just keep getting an automated voice... so frustrating! I do not recommend this company as they will not make things right! read more

My furnace made a loud bang and then started spraying water all over. I called Betlem to come take a look to figure out what was wrong. A technician showed up the next day took a few pictures and then left saying someone would get back to me. I have a boiler with baseboard heat so there is a high concern for pipes freezing inside the walls. No further communication occurred. I called another company and they did a much more extensive investigation and found that just the CO2 was so high they were very concerned. They also shut down the burner but left the water pump running to circulate the water in the pipes to help with the water not freezing. I can promise you that I will NEVER give a positive review for John Betlem ever. read more

November 13, 2025: I'll admit, I did not hire Betlem, my 90-year-old mother did, after her heat pump failed just before temps were forecast to drop into the 20's. They sold my mother on a new heat pump/install, DESPITE the fact it would take over 2 weeks to install it. They assured her that leaving 2 small, portable electric heaters would keep her 1113sq ft 2-floor condo warm while she waited. Granted, she agreed to this bad idea, but then she froze and "did not want to bother them" by letting them know she was freezing. They should have known better to push her into this sale, it shows clearly how they value $$$$ more than a 90-year-old little lady's well-being. When I called to cancel the sale, they actually argued with me at first until I totally lost my temper - I'm still shocked at the callousness of these people. read more

Another service provider had diagnosed my gas furnace as having a problem that required I buy a new furnace. I wanted a quote from Betlem and Kyle came by to give me the quote but first wanted to see the system. He called the furnace manufacturer and found that the bad part was still under warranty and could be fixed for a lot less money than a new system... plus when I told the original service provider what Kyle found out, they said the problem would be fixed at no charge under my service contract. That's the kind of honest and complete service that Betlem gives. They could have just let me buy a new furnace like the other company recommended, but went the extra mile to make sure I really needed one. read more

This company charged my daughter $1700 to "fix" her furnace. They came out two or three times, and the furnace still did not work. Since her her heat kept going out this winter, and she was fed up with this company, she finally had another company come out to fix her furnace. What a terrible business!! read more

I had them out last week ask if they were knowledgeable with the empire comfort system which is a smaller furnace that heats our add on room tHey said yes sent a technician out a few hours later he was at my house A little over a hour replace a pArt I'm certain paid way too much for that furance ran less than 24hrs I called the next day and said I'll just replace it so they made a Appointment with sales consultant he called the next day around 8am mind you my appointment with him is at 10am and gave me a price of $3600-$3700 okay before I even had them come the first time I looked up the price and it was under 1300 for the furnace he gonna give some bull about the vent for out side which is probably a couple of hundred if that all in all I got ripped off and I didn't go for it the second time I told the the consultant you might as well not even come read more

I contacted John Betlem to service my hot water heater, ultimately purchasing an annual service agreement to save a few bucks on the current appointment. The technician was great and professional. Fast forward to a year later I receive a call asking me to renew my contract. I stated that they never returned for the annual service as I was sold on. She responded with "that is the customer's responsibility to schedule." What I am paying them for?? Had she responded with "We will happily send someone over," the issue would have been resolved and I would have signed up for another year. However, here I am writing a negative review for poor customer service and zero follow through. I think their customer service needs to be educated that repeat customers cost less than new customers. read more

I am a Vetran of the United States Air Force. I am a caregiver for my elderly aunt in Pittsford. my aunt has a technician from this company come ever year to inspect her furnace and central air conditioner. after retiring from the USAF my equipment, uniforms, metals and notebooks from the many Air Force military schools I attended over the many years of my career. a number of these notebooks were sitting in plan view of the furnace in the basement. the only persons in my aunts basement in the past 10 years were myself and a technician from John Betlem heating and cooling. a notebook and a technical block book were taken by one of John Betlems technician. I spoke with Jim Betlem about the missing materials, requesting that he speak to the technicians who worked at my aunts home was rebuffed by Mr. Betlem with no action taken. I suggest everyone who deals with this company in stall cameras near there equipment. I also suggest people considering this company for there furnace and air conditioner install consider a mother company. If this can happen to me, a veteran of the gulf war, it can happen to you. read more

Steve Betlem has visited my home in Webster twice. To advise on whether he advised that my A/C & Furnace should be replaced, as both are about 16 yrs. old. He said if they are working fine then wait it out. I then joined the "Advantage Services Club", whereby I get high priority for a service call; included in the fee is an annual tune-up of the system. "Peace of mind" working with the second largest Plumbing/Heating service in the ROC area. Second "no charge" home visit was to assess how I should increase the heat in the basement (for a guest room). Once again Steve offered several "work around" options that did not cost much. The service call in May will take care of the suggestions. No charge for expert advice; no pressure to buy anything. Do not confuse a new company who are trying to get customers with a look alike company name: Betlem Residential Heating. I don't like that approach. read more

This is the second year we called them to fix the humidifier in our furnace. They fixed it last year and charged us 150.00 It broke again this year and they came again, this time saying it is not repairable and charged us 100 to tell us that. They did not wave the fee, since they did nothing but stole our money, I will never call these guys again. read more

There was a mix-up in what service agreement we thought we had and what the technician came and started (and almost finished by the time I realized). He sorted it out with us professionally and fairly and gave us a price break and completed the service he was in the middle of. He didn't leave til everything was sorted out on the phone w the office. I've recommended John Betlem in the past to several friends based on their installation work (on time and no mess left whatsoever) and this just encourages me to do so even more. Both expertise and service are top class. Kyle is a great technician, professional and friendly. When our 30+ year old boiler had another problem with it, my husband and I knew it was time to replace that bad boy. We researched online, talked to RG&E, called around and ultimately requested quotes for a replacement boiler from a couple of larger well-known companies (Betlem & Feldman) plus a couple of independent contractors who we trust. After the Betlem guy came out to the house & evaluated the situation he gave us a super over-priced quote that ended up being vastly more expensive than anyone else (we're talking thousands more - not hundreds). The Betlem guy also seemed to be keen on getting us a "home energy assessment" that sounded like more time for us and an opportunity for them to try to sell us stuff we don't want or need and can't afford. We were generally displeased and chose to go with someone else. The good news was they were able to come out to the house the day after we called them, but we found that was pretty common among the bigger companies and even some smaller contractors anyways. I honestly hate going online and taking the time to do 1-star reviews, and as you can see from my review distribution it's pretty rare for me to do so. I really felt like this was a slimy experience and I would highly recommend that consumers look elsewhere before working with Betlem. read more

Talk about a lifesaver! During the longest stretch of scorchingly hot weather, my a/c decides to quit. Stealing shamelessly from the movie-"Who ya gonna call - John Betlem!" Kyle came, quickly diagnosed the problem, and got us back up and running as quick as he could! No muss, no fuss! He also took the time to give me some great advice on furnace filters. Outstanding service. Our draft inducer died on a 17 degree night. The dispatcher and Robert the tech were knowledgeable and extremely helpful with my inquiries. I was able to schedule a morning appointment on very short notice, and by the same afternoon my house was cranking out heat and running more efficiently than before. I called for a service call early today, a Thursday morning in January. I was told they could not come out to our house either today or tomorrow. This was for a breakdown and not routine maintenance. I was under the impression that John Betlem made emergency service calls 24/7. This is the reason why we didn't mind paying the higher prices they charge. The company gives the impression they are available for emergencies, but they will not always come out in an emergency, even for old customers. I called several heating companies and had four of them out to my house to assess my boiler. Yes, it is original (1948), but it works well for its age. It needed a repair, but I also wanted an honest estimate for how much it would cost to replace. It seemed like no one wanted to even look at it. They only wanted to replace it, and continued to tell me things to make me afraid ("You know, you'll be without heat in the dead of winter, and we can't get to you...no one will, for a few days...that's just how it is in Rochester," etc.). I was feeling hopeless, but I was also determined to try to repair it as long as I can so I can pay off some home related debt over the next few years. The Home Comfort Consultant, Jason, came in, greeted me professionally, took one look at my boiler, and told me he could fix it and keep it running as long as I wanted it to run. He did tell me it will cost around 6-7K to replace, which was in the ballpark of the other four companies. He then proceeded to fix the issue (a wire had become detached), and we now have heat upstairs again. He didn't even charge me for the repair, even though two other companies charged me 100.00 just to look at it and not even fix it. I have officially cancelled my appointments for other estimates, and when I need any repairs, I'm calling the Home Comfort Consultant. Betlem will be the company replacing my boiler, too. I cannot possibly recommend Betlem enough; they definitely hired an honest, efficient worker! read more

Rip off!! They bought Lang Heating and Cooling and took over accounts. Charged me over $400.00 to change a zone valve on my boiler which costs $89.00!! Takes 5 minutes to replace!! I've replaced 2 myself!! When I called them I told them what the problem was and they came didn't bring the the part so they could PAD the bill!! . Thought I'd give give them 1 more chance. So I had a defective Thermal Coupler! $12.00 part! 20 minute replace!! Charged over $200.00!! Nope never again!! Crooked!!!!! Never again!! read more

Thanks to Jason in the parts department for helping me track down the exact model I was looking for. Mike did a great job on the installation including pulling additional wire to insure that I was able to use all of the features of the new thermostat. He also did a great job on cleanup. My house lost heat in January 2014. I suspected the issue was the thermocouple. This has happened in the past and, when it does, I spend $10 on a new thermocouple and replace it myself. However, this time I was traveling for work. I called John Betlem Heating and Cooling and they sent someone over right away. It was the thermocouple and they did replaced and get my heat working right away. They charged me $99 for a diagnostic fee which I was happy to pay. However, they charged me $80.41 for a new Q340A1090 36" thermocouple. Look that up. I spoke on the phone with them about this outrageous markup. They said that was the price. Recently we had a power outage and my generator didn't kick in. Timing of getting a repair quickly was critical because I was leaving for the West Coast for three months. I called John Betlem Heating and Cooling and they sent out a technician to look into the issue. Turns out I had a faulty starter issue. The next day a different technician, Todd, came out with the part but it was incorrect. Todd got right on the phone and located the correct part which was brought out the next day and installed. After installation, unfortunately for me, the control panel was found to be defective. It was late in the day, Friday, but Todd was able to locate a panel on the other side of the city. He picked up the part Saturday morning and came put to the house to install the panel. My generator is now working. It was a stressful time, due to our scheduled travel arrangements.
